Reason for doing this study In the primary school curriculum, Vietnamese occupies a particularly important position in the formation of knowledge and skills in other subjects, which is the foundation for students to do well in the upper grades.
This is due to the fact that learning Vietnamese provides knowledge about culture, lifestyle, customs, events, etc. around life, thereby forming and developing students' thinking about language, how to communicate, convey ideas, express feelings, and shape personality. Learning Vietnamese gives students the confidence to actively participate in learning and communication activities in school while influencing the learning outcomes of other subjects. Vietnamese is a compulsory subject in primary school, teaching students in their mother tongue the ability to read informational texts, the ability to write, speaking and listening skills to serve the basic requirements of life.
Equipping students to develop listening, speaking, and reading and writing skills is the most urgent task in Vietnamese at primary school. Speaking-listening activities is a pair of language activities in the form of audio communication between people and people in society. In language activities, speaking- listening is an effective means of accompanying people, helping people to perceive and learn about the surrounding world effectively. The use of speaking-listening appears regularly and happens every day with students, both in study and reality.
Each individual when communicating not only knows how to speak but also listen. Students use their listening ability to absorb ideas from an event, a good story is read by others, and use their speaking ability when students need to present their own opinion about an event or tell a story, and summarize the story for everyone to hear. Thus, it can be seen that speaking - listening skills play an essential role in learning, living, and daily life. In the General Education Program (GET) 2018, the content of Vietnamese subjects focuses on 7 forming and developing students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities.
In particular, the practice of speaking - listening skills has helped students to be able to communicate and behave in real-life situations; judge things and events based on their own perceptions. Through each lesson content, students are trained in speaking-listening activities, acquiring knowledge about things, phenomena, animals, people, society, examples, good deeds, and transforming knowledge that applies to life. In addition, speaking and listening skills help students convey ideas, and understanding, and know how to behave in accordance with social standards. Therefore, it is necessary to cultivate and develop speaking skills.
Listening to students is necessary to promote the positive aspects and limit the negative aspects. In grade 2, students have the ability to listen and speak Vietnamese fluently, listen to acquire knowledge, and speak or present their own opinions, and tell about an object or event in life. However, the speaking and listening ability of 2nd graders in Vietnamese class is still not really proficient and in fact, their speaking activities are still limited as not expressing their own opinions coherently, their ability to absorb and listen is not sensitive, afraid to speak or not confident when speaking in front of a large number of people, speaking incomplete sentences. Some reasons for this can be mentioned as students do not have various vocabulary or do not practice speaking regularly.
Therefore, the development of speaking and listening skills for 2nd graders is necessary for their learning process.
