To elucidate the objectives of the research, three facets of the research question were examined namely the main English speaking difficulties encountered by ATC students, the possible causes of these difficulties, and feasible solutions to surmount their difficulties. The research employed a questionnaire method to collect data.
The questionnaire was sent electronically to 62 ATC students to gather needed information. Afterward, the data were analyzed by SPSS software to examine the reliability and analyze descriptive statistics. The research’s findings indicate that three significant difficulties hindering students from English speaking proficiency were inadequate English vocabulary, misuse of complex structure, and inability to employ a wide range of structures. Besides, three possible causes of students’ English speaking difficulties were that they have not studied actively, lacked effective self-study methods, and felt nervous when speaking in public.
With regard to suggested strategies, most respondents revealed that it is helpful for them to receive feedback for their speaking performance, bonus points for active contribution, and chances to work in pairs or in groups regularly. Keywords: English speaking difficulties, English speaking proficiency, English- majored students. viii CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION 1. Introduction In the current globalization context, it is fundamental for people to master foreign languages, especially the English language which is regarded as the global language of the world.
In the context of Vietnam, the government has permitted multitudinous foreign enterprises to invest in diverse industries in the country due to the advancement of modern science and technology and the integration policy; therefore, it has led to increased interactions between Vietnamese people and foreigners. Consequently, the demand for learning foreign languages in general and the English language in particular saw a considerable increase in Vietnam in recent years (Ngo, 2010). Of all major English skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing that are instructed prevalently in most English classes, speaking is esteemed as the most significant skill for students to acquire due to its immense benefits. First and foremost, speaking English fluently and accurately could help English-majored students to follow English-related subjects at university effectively.
Second, English speaking proficiency assists overseas students to remove language barriers and enables them to adapt to foreign cultures and environments effortlessly. Regarding the importance of English speaking proficiency, Nunan (1991) also emphasized that mastering speaking skills is the single most crucial facet of learners, and success can be determined based on the ability to perform a conversation in the language. However, in Vietnamese context, English subject is considered one of the most complex subjects at school and university, and English speaking proficiency may be challenging for Vietnamese students to acquire because it is patently clear that speaking a foreign language is much more difficult than speaking the native tongue. In addition, Shen & Chiu (2019) confirmed that several previous research studies have investigated Asian students’ English speaking challenges, but there are inadequate studies on the English speaking difficulties of Vietnamese students.
Therefore, it is in desperate need of conducting more research studies about English speaking difficulties confronted by Vietnamese students, and several possible solutions should be put forward to assist them in enhancing their English speaking proficiency. Background of the Study In Vietnam’s context, although the majority of English-majored students have acquired a long run of English instruction, from primary education to tertiary level, it does not mean that they are fluent and proficient speakers of English. Khong (2011) also confirmed that several students are relatively good at writing and reading English; however, they find it challenging to speak English fluently and accurately. Although many existing problems hinder Vietnamese students from becoming proficient in speaking English, limited research studies have been extensively conducted on this pressing issue in Vietnam.
Consequently, the research is carried out at Banking Academy of Vietnam and takes English-majored students as a subject of the study with the purpose of identifying ATC students’ common difficulties when taking the “Speaking III” course. From that, some possible solutions would be suggested to deal with their English speaking problems. “Speaking III” course consists of 8 units. Each unit focuses on a topic area that learners are likely to meet in the IELTS exam.
This can assist learners in accumulating a bank of vocabulary and ideas related to a wide range of topics. The prerequisite for ATC students to study the “Speaking III” subject is that they have to complete “Speaking I” and “Speaking II” courses. There are five fundamental objectives that ATC students must obtain after finishing the “Speaking III” module. First, students can deliver personal information and talk about familiar topics fluently.
Second, students are able to give a fluent speech on a topic within a short time of preparation. Third, they can organize and develop ideas coherently. Fourth, learners can give personal opinions with logical supporting ideas and various examples. Finally, students can complete the IELTS speaking test with a band score of 6 or higher.
However, the findings of the survey conducted with 62 English- majored students revealed that a small number of the respondents got high grades in the “Speaking III” course. Consequently, it is essential to conduct a research study in the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Banking Academy of Vietnam to investigate students’ difficulties when taking the course of “Speaking III” that hinder them from mastering English speaking. Objectives of the Study The study included three major detailed objectives, all of which would be presented as follows. First, the research aimed to find out the common difficulties encountered by English-majored students at Banking Academy when attending the “Speaking III” course.
Second, the writer had the intention of discovering possible causes leading to these English speaking difficulties. Third, some practical solutions would be suggested to surmount student’s difficulties in the “Speaking III” module and enhance their English speaking proficiency. Research Questions With the above mentioned objectives, the research is designed to answer the following questions: 1. What are the main difficulties encountered by ATC students in studying “Speaking III” course? 2.
What are the major causes of these English speaking difficulties? 3. What practical strategies can be used to deal with these English speaking difficulties? 1. Significance of the Study Among major English macro skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) which are substantial for learners to master foreign languages, speaking skill is deemed to be the most essential skill as well as the most challenging one for ESL and EFL learners to acquire. Previously, several research studies were conducted on EFL learners’ speaking problems; however, a specific study on English speaking difficulties faced by ATC students at Banking Academy of Vietnam has never been carried out before.
Hence, the researcher decided to conduct a study in the Faculty of Foreign Languages to identify ATC students’ difficulties in the “Speaking III” since it may bring about immense benefits for many stakeholders. First, the research’s results may provide ATC students with significant information about their English speaking problems that they may confront in the “Speaking III” course. Afterward, some effective solutions would be suggested so that the learners could recognize their own appropriate learning methods to improve their English speaking proficiency effectively. Furthermore, the findings of this study may 3 suggest reflection for other EFL learners in Vietnam.
Second, helpful information obtained from the research may enable language lecturers to understand more clearly their students’ problems in the “Speaking III” module. From that, lecturers evaluate whether the teaching methods and syllabus are really efficient or not to adjust so that they could assist ATC students in enhancing their English speaking skill. Finally, the research’s findings could contribute to further studies which conduct similar topics. Other researchers could employ this study as a reference for their research study.
Scope and Limitations of the Study The research was conducted at Banking Academy of Vietnam - Hanoi headquarters. The English-majored students at Banking Academy (so-called ATC students) who have finished “Speaking III” are considered the subject of the study. The research study was conducted within two months, from 5th March 2021 to 20th May 2021. Because the time for carrying out the study, the number of respondents participating in the survey, and face-to-face communication between the supervisor and the writer were limited, the results of the study may have some shortcomings and drawbacks.
