I. Giới thiệu chung

Nghiên cứu này nhằm khám phá nhận thức sinh viên chuyên Anh về vai trò văn học Anh trong việc học ngoại ngữ tại Trường Đại học Luật Hà Nội. Văn học Anh không chỉ là một phần của chương trình giảng dạy mà còn đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc phát triển kỹ năng ngôn ngữ của sinh viên. Theo các nghiên cứu trước đây, việc học văn học giúp sinh viên không chỉ nắm vững ngữ pháp mà còn hiểu sâu sắc về ngôn ngữ và văn hóa, từ đó nâng cao khả năng giao tiếp. Việc kết hợp văn học vào quá trình học ngoại ngữ mang lại nhiều lợi ích, như phát triển khả năng tư duy phản biện và kỹ năng giao tiếp hiệu quả.

1.1. Mục tiêu nghiên cứu

Mục tiêu chính của nghiên cứu là xác định nhận thức của sinh viên về tác động của văn học đối với việc học ngoại ngữ. Nghiên cứu sẽ khảo sát các khó khăn mà sinh viên gặp phải trong quá trình học văn học Anh và đề xuất các phương pháp cải thiện khả năng ngôn ngữ thông qua việc học văn học. Điều này không chỉ giúp sinh viên nâng cao kỹ năng ngôn ngữ mà còn tăng cường sự hiểu biết về văn hóa Anh, từ đó tạo ra một nền tảng vững chắc cho việc học tập và phát triển nghề nghiệp trong tương lai.

II. Tác động của văn học Anh trong việc học ngoại ngữ

Nghiên cứu cho thấy rằng vai trò văn học trong việc học ngoại ngữ là rất quan trọng. Văn học không chỉ cung cấp ngữ liệu phong phú mà còn giúp sinh viên phát triển các kỹ năng như đọc hiểu văn bản, phân tích và phê bình. Qua việc tiếp xúc với các tác phẩm văn học, sinh viên có cơ hội mở rộng vốn từ vựng và cải thiện khả năng diễn đạt ý tưởng. Hơn nữa, văn học còn giúp sinh viên hiểu rõ hơn về các bối cảnh văn hóa và lịch sử, từ đó tạo ra một cái nhìn toàn diện hơn về ngôn ngữ mà họ đang học. Các tác phẩm văn học Anh thường chứa đựng những thông điệp sâu sắc và có thể kích thích sự tò mò cũng như khả năng tư duy phản biện của sinh viên.

2.1. Khó khăn trong việc học văn học Anh

Mặc dù có nhiều lợi ích, sinh viên cũng gặp phải một số khó khăn trong việc học văn học Anh. Một số sinh viên cảm thấy khó khăn trong việc hiểu ngữ nghĩa sâu xa của các tác phẩm văn học, đặc biệt là những tác phẩm cổ điển. Điều này đôi khi dẫn đến sự chán nản và thiếu động lực trong việc học. Ngoài ra, việc thiếu sự hỗ trợ từ giảng viên và tài liệu học tập cũng là một yếu tố gây cản trở. Để khắc phục những khó khăn này, sinh viên cần được trang bị các phương pháp học tập hiệu quả và sự hướng dẫn từ giáo viên, nhằm giúp họ có thể tiếp cận và hiểu sâu hơn về văn học Anh.

III. Phương pháp cải thiện khả năng ngôn ngữ qua văn học

Để nâng cao hiệu quả học tập, sinh viên cần áp dụng một số phương pháp học ngoại ngữ thông qua văn học. Việc tổ chức các buổi thảo luận nhóm về các tác phẩm văn học không chỉ giúp sinh viên cải thiện khả năng giao tiếp mà còn tạo cơ hội để chia sẻ ý kiến và cảm nhận cá nhân. Ngoài ra, việc sử dụng các bài tập phân tích văn bản có thể giúp sinh viên phát triển kỹ năng tư duy phản biện và khả năng hiểu sâu sắc hơn về nội dung tác phẩm. Hơn nữa, giáo viên cũng nên khuyến khích sinh viên tham gia vào các hoạt động ngoại khóa liên quan đến văn học, như diễn kịch hay tổ chức các buổi đọc sách, nhằm tạo môi trường học tập năng động và sáng tạo.

3.1. Khuyến nghị cho sinh viên và giảng viên

Nghiên cứu cũng đưa ra một số khuyến nghị cho sinh viên và giảng viên nhằm cải thiện quá trình học ngoại ngữ qua văn học. Đối với sinh viên, việc chủ động tìm kiếm tài liệu bổ sung và tham gia vào các hoạt động học tập nhóm là rất quan trọng. Đối với giảng viên, việc cung cấp hướng dẫn cụ thể và hỗ trợ sinh viên trong việc tiếp cận văn học là cần thiết. Hơn nữa, việc tích cực sử dụng công nghệ trong giảng dạy văn học cũng có thể giúp sinh viên cảm thấy hứng thú hơn với môn học này.

IV. Kết luận

Tóm lại, vai trò văn học Anh trong việc học ngoại ngữ là không thể phủ nhận. Nghiên cứu này đã chỉ ra rằng sinh viên có nhận thức tích cực về tầm quan trọng của văn học trong việc phát triển khả năng ngôn ngữ của họ. Tuy nhiên, cần có sự hỗ trợ từ giảng viên và các phương pháp học tập hiệu quả để giúp sinh viên vượt qua những khó khăn trong quá trình học. Việc áp dụng văn học vào chương trình giảng dạy có thể tạo ra một môi trường học tập phong phú, giúp sinh viên không chỉ nắm vững ngôn ngữ mà còn hiểu sâu sắc về văn hóa và con người của ngôn ngữ đó.

4.1. Đề xuất nghiên cứu tiếp theo

Nghiên cứu này mở ra hướng đi cho các nghiên cứu tiếp theo về tác động của văn học đối với việc học ngoại ngữ. Các nghiên cứu trong tương lai có thể mở rộng phạm vi đối tượng và địa điểm nghiên cứu, từ đó cung cấp cái nhìn sâu sắc hơn về mối liên hệ giữa văn học và việc học ngôn ngữ. Hơn nữa, việc nghiên cứu các phương pháp giảng dạy văn học hiệu quả cũng là một lĩnh vực cần được khai thác.

iv ABSTRACTS The strong relationship between language and culture has been widely acknowledged by many scholars and researchers. Numerous studies have been conducted to figure out the importance of cultural learning in English language education. Promoting the interest in learning English through literature is viewed as one of the most ways to increase a student’s proficiency in a second language. On that account, this study aimed to investigate what English- majored students perceive about the importance of English literature in English language learning, difficulties in learning process and some methods to improve so that they can enhance their foreign language competence.

The research was implemented with the cooperation of 97 questionnaire respondents, together with 15 interviewees from legal English majors at HLU (course 44). The study was conducted by taking a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods with a survey questionnaire and in-depth interviews. The findings revealed that most of the students expressed positive attitudes towards the role of culture in English language learning. The results also signify that some seniors had to confront some problems and adopt numerous methods to improve the efficiency of their language over the process of learning English literature.

Some constructive recommendations for students, educators, and the Faculty of Legal Foreign Languages were given regarding facilitating the quality of foreign language learning acquisition in English literature classes at HLU. Rationale for the study English is agreed that it was and will continue to be the most prevailing language in the world in the years to come, in Vietnam, it has developed and changed over the years. Due to globalization and the rapid development of information and communication technologies, English is becoming more and more important in the Vietnamese education system. Hence, the role of language education is of vital necessity in order to equip younger generations with a good command of the English language for the purpose of becoming global citizens. It is widely agreed that language and culture have a strong relationship and it is impossible to separate them from each other.

Such an interwoven relationship has been investigated and confirmed by many researchers and scholars. To equip students for a modern society of globalization and economic integration, it is ultimate to help them understand the role of culture in English language learning because communication nowadays is taken place among people from diversified cultural backgrounds. Carter and McRae (2001:10) recommend using literature to help students go beyond “acquiring basic knowledge of the language” to “learning about the language and how it works” because using literature can help develop the “fourth” skill in language. The use of literature as a technique for teaching both basic language skills (I., reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and language areas (i., vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation) is very popular within the field of foreign language learning and teaching nowadays.

Similar to other countries in the world, English literature is taught in Vietnam for a number of reasons, the most common being that it provides easy | access to motivating content materials and cultural context, facilitates language acquisition, broadens students’ language awareness, and develops students’ interpretive skills. In terms of students’ perceptions of the importance of English literature in EFL, it was a vital component as their perceptions had a strong impact on their success in language learning and culture learning, and especially, people possessed positive attitudes towards language learning through literature and its people could learn target better than those who did not have a such positive attitude. The texts in the course will encourage reading, thereby promoting language acquisition and increasing students’ language awareness. Traditionally, students only learn the grammar and technicalities of the language, but as literature is introduced into the curriculum, literature classes become more effective for foreign language learning because of its funny and close.

Smith (Smith: 1972:276) points out a similar attitude when he states that “No teacher of literature ignores linguistic problems and no language teacher really wants to leave his students speaking a sterile impoverished version of the language”, implying that a knowledge of literature ‘adorns’, ‘hones’, and ‘polishes’ language learners’, and by the same token any language user’s linguistic skills and competencies while knowledge of language allows for better and more appreciative readers of literary texts. In response to the urgent demand for literature acquisition with the aim of learning a foreign language, the faculties of English in various tertiary institutions have incorporated the subject of English - American Literature into the curriculum, and the Faculty of Legal Foreign Languages at HLU is no exception. However, not many legal English-majored seniors perceive the significant influence of English literature on foreign language learning so as to study the subject with deliberate efforts and to prepare meticulously for their English credits of basic language. For that reason, the researcher, as a student majoring in legal English, have reached a decision to undertake a study on legal English-majored students’ perceptions towards the importance of English 2 literature in learning a foreign language at HLU with the hope that this study partly helps the seniors better in their English foreign language.
