Author Pham Tran Hong Hoanh ABSTRACT Learning languages demands effort not only from learners but also from teachers to be proficient in certain languages, especially in making learners be ready to convey their thoughts in speaking classes.
Hence, it is necessary to put care when individuals involving in speaking time. Enjoyable and exciting learning time is needed to motivate learners in joining and studying effectively. Therefore, gamification, the use of game design elements in non-game contexts, has experienced a meteoric rise due to its impacts on learners’ learning for decades duc to the fact that the power of gamification has widely been acknowledged in education to engage and motivate learners when it is used properly in classrooms (Hammer & Lee, 2011; Muntean, 2011). Gamification in learning means has been researched for contribution in seeking ways in increasing learners’ engagement and motivation by providing fun experience.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact that gamification has on undergraduate populations’ motivation in speaking classes. This study is conducted with a total number of 84 students at Cao Thang Technical College in Ho Chi Minh city in which students will experience learning speaking through the application of gamification. The results collected from questionnaire and semi- structure interview indicates that students are both motivated intrinsically and extrinsically in learning speaking. They are more confident and ready to convey their ideas in English after experiencing gamification.
Moreover, suggestions are also provided for potential use of gamification in learning and teaching speaking skill. Key words: Gamification, non-English majored students, speaking skill, motivation TABLE OF CONTENTS Lời'€aIfi:đDäP:;:::::::::::::2:::c:i:c2112221221116212611613512531131163351235863536355338833163358233563586338833885359358 i DÉGIATNHÔiiiiiissiiiagiiiiiiiii11211210112111211033511513351105461251128136318883585888861365143373381858398833865383513857 H LỖI(GHÏ\GR:. cu ch nh HH HH TH TH HH HH yết iv J\DSIT HC E211221122102110312020/41440145112161345143134401831492011441421202161821311114201411431512413143114915411144944314315 V T4DÌ€'0Ÿ€0ñ6liSiicossiaiiiniiiosiioaiiiiiiositit44511331146158433331383338355558:385858858858583358395855 vi iSDGEIEHBÏESL¿ii:.ziiiiaiiig3104414811311145113511623142018816325133519833084918413Ạ3953843987882313a415348584138528384 IX EÌSĐGEIBHTES:::-::i:icciiiitiiitiitiiitiii1ti121i11111423112313339532538650553355533353581233833336538232383316238825 xi CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION. Moreover, scope of the study and structure of the thesis are also mentioned. Each part is presented in details as follows: 1.
Background to the study It is widely believed that languages play an essential role in our life, and English turns into noticeable since it is noted in "Language in the Global Context: Implications for the Language Classroom" by Sawar (2000) that apart from the popularity of pop music and the expansion of technology, the use of English is a crucial part serving for education and communication. English has been around for more than five hundred years, and is being spoken by nearly up to 1.8 billion people around the world. Thanks to its appearance, language barriers have been solved to connect people from all over the world. That is why English has become one of the compulsory core subjects in the educational system taught from primary schools besides mathematics and Vietnamese.
Additionally, this language is required for undergraduate university courses as well as for a large number of vocational training courses. Since then, the process of teaching as well as the products of English learning are taken into consideration. Regardless of what country we are teaching in, it seems to be very difficult for many foreign language learners in speaking and communicating in another foreign language with confidence and fluency as to them, there are many obstacles preventing them from learning and using English counted as the fear of being embarrassed by not speaking correctly, making grammatical mistakes, lacking ideas in presenting the topic that they are discovering. They do not want to get out of their comfort zones, so they cannot break the limitation of their creativity to develop learning methods and techniques to master the language.
As teachers, we want them to be ready to speak at every opportunity given.
