I. Tổng Quan Về Mỉa Mai Trong Truyện Ngắn Edgar Allan Poe

Mỉa mai là một yếu tố quan trọng trong các tác phẩm của Edgar Allan Poe, đặc biệt là trong các truyện ngắn. Nó không chỉ là một thủ pháp tu từ mà còn là một công cụ để khám phá những khía cạnh tối tăm và phức tạp của tâm lý nhân vật và bối cảnh truyện. Phân tích tính mỉa mai trong truyện ngắn của Poe giúp chúng ta hiểu sâu hơn về giá trị nghệ thuật và giá trị nội dung của các tác phẩm này. Nghệ thuật mỉa mai được Poe sử dụng một cách tinh tế và đa dạng, tạo nên những hiệu ứng đặc biệt trong văn học Mỹ thế kỷ 19. Một số tác phẩm của Poe được nghiên cứu nhiều về tính trào phúng bao gồm The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart và The Black Cat.

1.1. Định Nghĩa và Phân Loại Mỉa Mai Trong Văn Học

Mỉa mai trong văn học là sự tương phản giữa những gì được nói và những gì thực sự có ý nghĩa. Nó có thể là mỉa mai lời nói, mỉa mai tình huống hoặc mỉa mai kịch tính. Muecke (1969) định nghĩa mỉa mai là nghệ thuật nói một điều gì đó mà không thực sự nói ra nó, tạo hiệu ứng sâu sắc hơn bề ngoài. Thompson (1948) mô tả nó như một sự khác biệt giữa biểu hiện và ý nghĩa, giữa vẻ bề ngoài và thực tế, hoặc giữa mong đợi và sự kiện. Việc phân loại mỉa mai giúp chúng ta phân tích và hiểu rõ hơn về ý nghĩa và tác dụng của nó trong các tác phẩm văn học.

1.2. Vai Trò Của Mỉa Mai Trong Việc Xây Dựng Tâm Lý Nhân Vật

Mỉa mai đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc xây dựng tâm lý nhân vật trong truyện ngắn của Poe. Thông qua việc sử dụng giọng điệu mỉa mai, Poe cho phép người đọc khám phá những suy nghĩ và cảm xúc ẩn sâu của nhân vật, thường là những điều mà họ không thể hoặc không muốn thể hiện trực tiếp. Sự tương phản giữa lời nói và hành động của nhân vật tạo ra một lớp ý nghĩa phức tạp, giúp người đọc hiểu rõ hơn về động cơ và bối cảnh của họ. Việc sử dụng ẩn dụ và sự châm biếm càng làm tăng thêm chiều sâu cho tâm lý nhân vật.

II. Thách Thức Trong Phân Tích Mỉa Mai Của Edgar Allan Poe

Việc phân tích mỉa mai trong truyện ngắn của Edgar Allan Poe không phải lúc nào cũng dễ dàng. Tính độc đáo trong phong cách viết của Poe, kết hợp với bối cảnh lịch sử và văn hóa thế kỷ 19, tạo ra những thách thức nhất định cho người đọc. Sự mơ hồ và đa nghĩa trong ngôn ngữ của Poe đòi hỏi người đọc phải có khả năng diễn giải và phân tích sâu sắc. Hơn nữa, việc xác định các loại mỉa mai khác nhau và hiểu ý nghĩa của chúng trong kết cấu truyện cũng đòi hỏi sự tỉ mỉ và cẩn trọng.

2.1. Khó Khăn Trong Việc Xác Định Các Loại Mỉa Mai Khác Nhau

Việc phân biệt giữa mỉa mai lời nói, mỉa mai tình huống và mỉa mai kịch tính đôi khi rất khó khăn, đặc biệt là trong các tác phẩm phức tạp của Poe. Một số đoạn văn có thể chứa nhiều loại mỉa mai cùng một lúc, khiến cho việc phân tích trở nên phức tạp hơn. Hơn nữa, ý nghĩa của mỉa mai có thể thay đổi tùy thuộc vào góc nhìn của người đọc và bối cảnh cụ thể của câu chuyện.

2.2. Ảnh Hưởng Của Bối Cảnh Lịch Sử Và Văn Hóa Đến Việc Diễn Giải

Bối cảnh lịch sử và văn hóa thế kỷ 19 có ảnh hưởng lớn đến cách chúng ta diễn giải mỉa mai trong truyện ngắn của Poe. Một số biện pháp tu từ và giọng điệu có thể mang ý nghĩa khác nhau đối với người đọc hiện đại so với người đọc đương thời. Do đó, việc hiểu rõ bối cảnh lịch sử và văn hóa là rất quan trọng để có thể phân tích mỉa mai một cách chính xác và toàn diện.

III. Phương Pháp Phân Tích Giọng Điệu Mỉa Mai Trong Truyện Ngắn Poe

Có nhiều phương pháp khác nhau để phân tích giọng điệu mỉa mai trong truyện ngắn của Edgar Allan Poe. Một phương pháp phổ biến là tập trung vào việc xác định các biện pháp tu từ như ẩn dụ, châm biếm, sự tương phản và mỉa mai lời nói. Một phương pháp khác là phân tích kết cấu truyện và góc nhìn của người kể chuyện để tìm ra những dấu hiệu của mỉa mai. Quan trọng nhất là phải đọc kỹ và suy ngẫm về ý nghĩa của từng chi tiết trong câu chuyện.

3.1. Xác Định và Phân Tích Các Biện Pháp Tu Từ

Việc xác định và phân tích các biện pháp tu từ như ẩn dụ, châm biếm, sự tương phản và mỉa mai lời nói là một bước quan trọng trong việc phân tích mỉa mai trong truyện ngắn của Poe. IV. Ví Dụ Về Mỉa Mai Trong The Cask of Amontillado Của Edgar Allan Poe

The Cask of Amontillado là một ví dụ điển hình về việc sử dụng mỉa mai trong truyện ngắn của Edgar Allan Poe. Toàn bộ câu chuyện được xây dựng trên nền tảng của mỉa mai kịch tính, khi người đọc biết rõ về ý định trả thù của Montresor, trong khi Fortunato lại hoàn toàn mù quáng. Mỉa mai lời nói cũng được sử dụng một cách tinh tế trong những lời khen ngợi và sự quan tâm giả tạo mà Montresor dành cho Fortunato. Sự tương phản giữa vẻ bề ngoài lịch sự và lòng thù hận sâu sắc của Montresor tạo ra một hiệu ứng ám ảnh và đáng sợ.

4.1. Mỉa Mai Kịch Tính Về Ý Định Trả Thù Của Montresor

Mỉa mai kịch tính là yếu tố trung tâm trong The Cask of Amontillado. Người đọc biết rằng Montresor đang lên kế hoạch trả thù Fortunato, trong khi Fortunato lại tin rằng Montresor là một người bạn tốt. Sự tương phản này tạo ra một cảm giác căng thẳng và lo lắng cho người đọc, khi họ biết trước về số phận bi thảm của Fortunato. V. Ảnh Hưởng Của Mỉa Mai Đến Giá Trị Nghệ Thuật Của Truyện Ngắn Poe

Mỉa mai đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc nâng cao giá trị nghệ thuật của truyện ngắn Edgar Allan Poe. Nó không chỉ tạo ra sự bất ngờ và kịch tính mà còn giúp người đọc khám phá những lớp ý nghĩa sâu xa hơn trong câu chuyện. Nghệ thuật mỉa mai của Poe thể hiện sự tinh tế trong việc sử dụng ngôn ngữ và khả năng tạo ra những hiệu ứng tâm lý mạnh mẽ. 6.1. Giá Trị Nội Dung Và Giá Trị Nghệ Thuật Của Mỉa Mai

Mỉa mai đóng góp vào cả giá trị nội dung và giá trị nghệ thuật của truyện ngắn Poe. Về mặt nội dung, nó giúp Poe truyền tải những thông điệp sâu sắc về bản chất con người, sự tội lỗi, sự điên rồ và cái chết. Về mặt nghệ thuật, nó làm tăng thêm sự hấp dẫn và kịch tính cho câu chuyện, khiến người đọc không thể rời mắt khỏi trang sách.

6.2. Hướng Nghiên Cứu Tương Lai Về Mỉa Mai Trong Văn Học

Nghiên cứu về mỉa mai trong văn học, đặc biệt là trong các tác phẩm của Edgar Allan Poe, vẫn còn nhiều tiềm năng phát triển trong tương lai. Các nghiên cứu có thể tập trung vào việc phân tích các loại mỉa mai khác nhau, khám phá ảnh hưởng của bối cảnh lịch sử và văn hóa, hoặc so sánh cách sử dụng mỉa mai của Poe với các nhà văn khác. Ngoài ra, cũng có thể nghiên cứu về ảnh hưởng của mỉa mai đến cảm xúc và suy nghĩ của người đọc.

The theory of irony in literature suggested by Muecke (1969) is mainly adopted as the analytical framework in this study. This research utilizes quantitative and qualitative methods with priorities given to the qualitative.

The data is collected by means of reading, identifying, classifying and reporting them into the analysis. 31 samples of ironical expressions were found in Poe‟s three short stories, of which there is one sample both verbal and dramatic ironies. The results show that verbal, situational and dramatic ironies are mainly used in Poe‟s works. In addition, the findings reveal that irony can be created by ten techniques in the art of irony including pretended advice or encouragement to the victim, pretended agreement with the victim, rhetorical question, innuendo and insinuation, ambiguity, false statement, internal contradiction, fallacious reasoning, hyperbole and stylistically signalled irony.

Rationale of the study It is obvious that English has become an important part not only in communication but also in many other aspects of life; therefore, mastering this foreign language is of great importance. Learning English through literature works is a good way. When learning literature works, we can not ignore to study stylistic devices which make works more intriguing and interesting.

Similarily, when learning stylistic devices, we can not pay no attention to studying irony. However, how to study it well is still a difficult question for many learners. Irony is an interesting language phenomenon used frequently in any spoken or written genre. Simply, irony is a contrast between what is said and what is meant; what is expected to happen and what actully happens; or what readers know and what characters believe.

Irony is a rhetorical device in literature which is often employed to gain the desired effect of being scoffing, satirical, humorous and amusing. Moreover, real life is full of ironical expressions and situations. Therefore, the studying of irony in the literature works brings it closer to the life. Edgar Allan Poe is one of the great American writers; he is also known as a master of horror and irony who has the ability to use every word to his advantage, thus creating a short story of great substance.

In most of literary criticism dealing with Edgar Allan Poe, little attention has been accorded to irony. In this sense, this title, namely “A Study on Irony in Short Stories by Edgar Allan Poe” is conducted to help learners understand irony concepts, identify and interpret types of irony in Poe‟s short stories in particular and in literature works in general more easily. Aims of the study The study aims at: (1) finding out common types of irony in Edgar Allan Poe‟s short stories; (2) investigating the creation of irony in Edgar Allan Poe‟s short stories; (3) suggesting the implications for teaching and learning irony in literature works.Poe TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail. Scope of the study Edgar Allan Poe‟s short stories include tale of horror, detective story and science fiction.

As a whole, this paper does not expect to cover irony in all works of Poe. Poe‟s tales of horror is paid the most attention because of being often written ironically. Due to the limited time, the data of this paper will only be collected from three out of Poe‟s typical tales of horror: The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell- Tale Heart, and The Black Cat, three relatively short stories written between the years 1843-1846. The selected stories are among Poe's masterpieces which possesses the quintessential-features of the gothic tale: a haunted house, darkness, terror, madness and death.

They are translated into Vietnamese most among Poe‟s short stories as of 2011 and served as teaching American and English literature at some Vietnamese universities. Significance of the study Irony is an interesting rhetorical device in literature, thus a detailed and systematic study on irony has both theoretical and practical significances. Firstly, the study is expected to provide useful knowledge about types of irony as well as the creation of irony in Poe‟s short stories. Secondly, the study helps Vietnamese learners of English better understand and interpret irony in literary works.

Moreover, it can contribute to teaching American and English literature at Vietnamese universities of foreign languages. Eventually, the study hopes to add to a new approach to Poe‟s short stories, which creates more diversity in an research area on Poe‟s short stories latterly. Research questions In order to cover all above aims, the study is to shed light on the following research questions: (1) What common types of irony are found in Edgar Allan Poe‟s short stories ? Research methods Guided by the above research questions, the present study applies quantitative and qualitative methods based on the data collected from Poe‟s three typical short stories.

In other words, all the conclusions and considerations are based on the painstakingly quantitative and qualitative analysis of ironic expressions in the three short stories by Poe. In addition, such methods as descriptive and analytic are also utilized to describe, and analyze the common types of irony so as to bring out the creation of irony in Poe‟s short stories. Data collection and analysis Ironic expressions will be collected from the three famous short stories - The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell- Tale Heart, and The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe issued on the Internet. The data will be both quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed.

Quantitatively, the data will be analyzed in terms of the frequencies of verbal, situational, and dramatic ironies suggested by Muecke (1969:40-42) and in terms of the occurrences of the techniques for creating irony in Poe‟s short stories. Qualitatively, the data will be described, analyzed, and explained the types of irony as well as the techniques for creating irony in Poe‟s short stories. Design of the study In order to make this thesis conventional and well organized, the minor thesis includes three main parts as follows: Part A: Introduction – This part will cover some points including the rationale, the aims, the scope, the significance, research methodology, and the organization of the study. Part B: Development – This part has been elaborated four chapters as follows: Chapter I: Theoretical background and Literature review provides the theoretical background related to the study such as a brief history of irony studies, definitions of irony, types of irony, essential elements of irony, grades of irony, and detecting and interpreting irony.
