Leaner autonomy which means turning a training process into a self-training process is especially important in the current situation due to the unpredicted and complicated outbreak of Covid-19. This research is Commented [b1]: Evidence of Covid 19 imapct on the students’ LA development.

The study is undertaken as an action research Commented [b2]: The main aim is to develop LA. project which collected and analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data including questionnaire, interviews and teaching journals. The outcome of the research indicates that most of the students find the use of ER portfolios useful for their learning autonomy.

A majority of them have learnt how to stick on the requirements of the assignments during their reading and be more responsible for their study. Furthermore, they have become more critical on the knowledge and information they encountered and started to understand their strength and weakness to find out their own suitable learning style. However, they are still struggling with some essential skills such as time management. The research results indicated that both the teacher and the students met some obstacles during the implementation process, but most of them favor keeping using the ER portfolios in the future.

In addition, the chosen research methods and the structure of the study are also provided.

Rationale of the study Learner autonomy has been a central theme in educational debate over the last thirty years. Mainstream education has witnessed a paradigmatic shift away from teacher-centered learning to more personalized or participative replicas of the learning process, and trends in language teaching have reflected the progress in mainstream educational practice (Nunan, 2000). In EFL, shifts towards greater learner self-reliance Commented [b3]: Exact citations required. have received support on account of practical and pedagogical reasons, with a view to making timetable and syllabus more flexible as well as making learning more learner- centred, more motivating and more efficient simultaneously (Dickinson, 1987).

According to Benson and Voller (1997), active participation, taking responsibility for their learning and for making the decisions in the learning process makes learning more effective. Therefore, enhancing students’ autonomous learning is also a matter of concern to not only the researcher but also to the high school in Nam Dinh where the research was carried out since in the traditional teaching context of Vietnam, Vietnamese students tend to be passive in their learning. Realizing that ER portfolios can be one of the most effective ways to help students enhance their autonomous learning urged and inspired me to conduct this study in an attempt to investigate the possibility of enhancing LA through ER portfolios. Aims, objectives and research questions The study aims at enhancing a group of high school students’ LA through the implementation of ER portfolios at a high school in Nam Dinh province.

Specifically, the research aims to investigate the extent to which portfolio ER implementation helps the students enhance their learning autonomy. Additionally, the study aims to find out 1 the students’ attitudes toward the use of ER portfolios in class in terms of the effectiveness of portfolios and the obstacles emerging in the implementation process. The objectives of the study are addressed in the following research questions: 1. To what extent does the implementation of extensive reading portfolios help to enhance the students’ learner autonomy? 2.

What are the students’ opinions of implementing extensive reading portfolios with a view to their learner autonomy enhancement? 3. What are the teacher and students’ difficulties emerging in the implementation process? 1. Significance of the study As the study is completed, it is expected to greatly benefit the related populations, including high school students, English teachers, and policymakers interested in the topic. This study would present useful information to policymakers and teachers to consider developing ER portfolios in the curriculum for the students.

Furthermore, the researcher also hopes this study can, to some extent, raise the awareness of students of their own difficulties and perception on the benefits of LA to their English learning process in general, and to their ER learning in particular. After all, it is the students that play the most decisive role in their success in learning English in general, and reading in particular. Methods of the study The study is carried out as an action research project which employs both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and data analysis. Specifically, the 11th- grade class which the researcher was currently teaching was required to use ER portfolios for half of a semester which was integrated as home-assigned task in the pre-existing syllabus of the class.

A questionnaire, interviews, and teaching journals were administered to collect relevant data to seek answers to the three research questions involving the students’ LA development, their attitudes toward the influence of ER portfolios on their LA and the obstacles in the implementation process. Structure of the thesis The thesis is entitled “Applying extensive reading portfolios to improve learner autonomy of 11th-grade students at a high school in Nam Dinh province” which comprises five main chapters: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Data analysis and Findings along with Conclusion, followed by the List of References and Appendices. Chapter 1: Introduction This chapter provides a general background and clarifies the rationale of this research. Research aim and objectives as well as research questions are also specified.

Chapter 2: Literature Review In this chapter, through studying the existing literatures, the definition of key terms including LA and ER, portfolios are provided.
