Afterwards, the aims, scOpe and meth0Ods Of the study are presented.
The chapter ends with an Overview Of the thesis structure. Fali0nale In the glOsalized infOrmatiOn age in which we are living, lechn0l0gical advances have made glOpal cCOmmunicatiOn mOre ard mOre easily accessible. In Order 10 be a part Of this glObal cOmmunity, having g00d cOmmand Of a cOmm0On language is clearly an advantage. Tleedless 10 say, till the preset time, despite the Outnumper speakers Of chinese, English is sill the dOminant language in terms Of its cCOmvenience and pOpularity.
TO be successful in gl0bal cCOmmunicatiOn, merely being g00d at grammar and structures is 10 lOnger apprOpriate. The current situatiOn requires learners Of English 10 acquire it 10 satisfy the demand Of becOming 110+ Only g00d speakers but alsO effective listeners. TherefOre, “English listening cCOmprehensi0n has taken On increased impOrtance fOr ESL/EFL learners, since failing 10 COmprehend sp0ken English may cause n0n-understanding Or misunderstanding which in turn leads 10 a preakdOwnin cOmmunicatiOn.” (chem, 2009:54) In Order 10 impr0ve Vietnamese learners’ cCOmmunicative cOmpetence 10 meet the demand Of glOnalizaliOn, English teaching methOd0l0gy has been cOnsiderably refOrmed. The teaching melh0d has shifted from Grammar TranslatiOn 10 AudiO-lingual and n0w 10 cOmmunicative Appr0ach in which teachers becOme instructOrs wh0 pr0vide guidance fOr students 10 perfOrm lifelike tasks 10 mOre realize the teaching-learning prOcess.
In the pr0cess Of acquiring English in a mew light, listening seems always {0 be the mOst challenging sunject fOr learners, especially fOr †h0se wh0 cOme fr0m rural areas. These studemts may have g00d kn0Owledge Of grammar and structures, but merely these are n0t enOugh 10 assure equal ability Of listening and speaking. This phenOmenOn is quite COmm0On in universities arOund Viettam and Military Science Academy is 10+ an exceptiOn. Military Science Academy is the Only military academy in Vietnam which trains majOr language cadets.
Like students at Other language universities in Vietnam, cadets here are faced up with many difficulties in learning listening skill, especially when they lister 10 military texts. Am0Ong variOus causes Of this such as students" packgrOund knOwledge, students" interests im listening, the difficulty level Of listening texts, etc., inapprOpriate strategies fOr explOiting listening 2 tasks Or listening withOut clear strategies are the main pr0blems. As judged by Mauman (2002), the majOrily Of students cOme 10 listening achivities with little kn0wledge Of hOw the listening pr0cess wOrks and even with seri0us miscOnceptiOn abOut what make them successful in listening. TherefOre, it is urgent that clear listening strategies shOuld be applied in explOiting listening tasks (especially, ESP listening tasks), and they sh0uld als0 se lransferred 10 and aps0rbed by individual students sO that students themselves can be mOre active and effective in dealing with sp0ken language n0t Only in classr00m but alsO im sOcial cOmtacts.
These abOve reasOns led the authOr Of this paper t0 cOnduct this study in Order 10 discOver listening strategies in general and applying thOse strategies im exp|Oiting listening tasks in campaign 2 in particular. The authOr herself hOpes that this paper will cOmtribute 10 impr0ving the teaching Of listening 10 military texts at her academy amd alsO wishes 10 get useful cOmtrinutiOns frOm her cOlleagues as well as readers 10 help her cadets better explOit listening tasks in the military cOurse 500k ,,campaign 2". Aims Of the study This minOr study is aimed at giving suggested strategies fOr explOiting listening tasks in the Military English cOurse 500k campaign 2 at English Department, MSA and at the same time implicatiOns fOr mOre effectively expl0iting listening tasks in the B00k are given. In Order 10 fulfill the as|0vemertiOned aims, the study tried 10 answer †w0 f0IlOwing quesH0ns: (1) What aze the app20pziate steategies f0z explOiting listening tasks in campaign 2 at English Depaetment, MSA? and (2) What can ve dOne 10 expl0it listening tasks in campaign 2 effe clively at MSA? The study primarily investigates the theOrelical backgrOund Of language learning strategies, listening strategies and devel0ps further in investigating strategies uses as well as explOring suitable listening strategies fOr explOiting listening tasks im campaign 2.
It, therefOre, serves as a valuable resOurce fOr teachers at ED, MSA 10 gain a deeper insight intO the pracice Of Military English listening strategies amOmg the third-year cadets. MOre impOrtantly, a suggested list Of listening strategies is presented 10 assist teachers with way 10 enhance their cadets’ ability in prOcessing military listening tasks. At the same time, the study is Open 10 invite cOmtrituliOns frOm readers 10 add mOre suitable strategies fOr explOiting listening tasks in campaign 2 in particular and in Other Military English cOurse b00ks in general. ScOpe Of the study Tt wOuld be really challenging fOr this minOr thesis t0 cOver all the aspects Of listening.
TherefOre, the study just stays within the strategies fOr explOiting listening tasks in the cOurse b00k campaign 2 by SimOn MellOr-clark and YvOnne baker de Allamiran0, a 4 Military English cOurse s00k. 0†her areas Of lisleming such as ch00sing malerials 0r academic listening are beyOnd the study. MethOds Of the study In cOmpleting this research, fOlOwing methOds have been used: First Of all, intensive and extensive reading helps equip the authOr with sufficient packgrOund kn0wledge related 10 listening cOmprehensiOn, language learning strategies, and listening strategies sO as 10 cOllect data fOr the literature review. SecOnd, survey queshOnnaires fOr students are used as the majOr instrument 10 cOllect data.
Third, OpservatiOn Of students" real perfOrmance thr0ugh a listening test as well as infOrmal discussiOns with bOth the third-year cadets amd the teachers at ED, MSA have been made. cOllected data, then, have been prOcessed and analyzed. Design Of the study The study is divided int0 five chapters as fOll0ws: chapter 1 is the intrOductiOn part Of the study in which TeasOns fOr c0nduchng the research, Aims Of the study, ScOpe Of the study, Meth0ds Of the study and Design Of the study are respectively displayed.
