Hoang Quoc Thinh This research was conducted to determine the actuality of vocabulary learning and student vocabulary strategies at Faculty of Foreign Languages of Banking Academy. The researcher explores students' perceptions of the significance of vocabulary and the challenges they face when learning vocabulary.
A questionnaire method bases on 5-level Likert scale is carried out among 171 students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Banking Academy. In general, students recognize the significance of vocabulary and strongly concur that instructors should devote more time to teaching vocabulary. In addition, students acknowledge having many difficulties with learning vocabulary, particularly in terms of word meanings. The survey results also indicate that students employ a variety of strategies for acquiring vocabulary.
Despite utilizing so many vocabulary learning strategies, students are unable to overcome their vocabulary learning difficulties. This study concludes with several recommendations for both students and lecturers with the desire to improve students' vocabulary learning. viii CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION This chapter focuses on presenting general information about current study. The main objectives include the statement of the problem, the rationale for the study, the research questions, and the significance of the thesis.
Additionally, the researcher also discusses the scope, limitations, and structure of studying in this chapter. Statement of the problem and rationale for the study 1. Statement of the problem English is the international language, with more than 60 countries where English currently predominates or is an official language (Lucantoni, 2006). Vietnam is actively promoting the tendency of global integration across all industries.
As a result, the study of foreign languages, particularly English, is becoming more and more important in the area of education. English is considered a formal foreign language in the Vietnamese educational system and is taught in all levels of education, from elementary school to university. In recent years, primary schools have been implementing an elective English curriculum for grades 1 and 2. While English used to be only taught to students from grade 3rd.
In addition, Dang (2020) also emphasized that the most widely used language in the world is English. Fluency in English will make it easier for students to acquire skills, access a wide range of human knowledge, and comprehend multinational culture. Therefore, English is valued in the era of globalization when it is not only a global language; it also has a significant role in a number of fields, including politics, commerce, society, and education. There are four basic skills required for learning English: listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Baçeci & Yaşar, 2007; Barn, 1997, as cited in Darancık, 2018).
However, human language depends on the vocabulary used or acquired. Without vocabulary, learners will not be provided with a motive for using language (Richards & Renandya, 2002). As a result, vocabulary is one of the components of language that requires attentive study as well as instruction. According to (Cahyono & Widiati, 2008), if students know inside-out vocabulary, they can quickly make progress in their linguistic abilities in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
The 1 more words learners are able to use and understand, the more semantics they can convey to contexts (Coxhead, 2006). Vocabulary is an important factor for ordinary foreign language learners in general and foreign language major students in particular. Students of Banking Academy's Foreign Language Department have to learn a wide range of specialized vocabulary. Wilkins (1972) who describes the importance of vocabulary when compared to grammar said that without grammar very little information is expressed but no vocabulary, nothing is conveyed.
The aforementioned quotation highlights the important role of vocabulary in language acquisition. Despite being a minor aspect, it is essential in improving students' language skills Thus, acquiring vocabulary can be seen as the primary focus for English majors, which also causes problems for learners in their learning process. Rationale for the study It is undeniable that students must have sufficient vocabulary when learning a new language. Vocabulary is the key component for learning English, consequently, it cannot be ignored.
If learners have a short vocabulary, these skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be impacted (Reskiawan, Andas and Hajra 2020). According to Afzal (2019), many non-native English speakers have difficulty with word meaning, pronunciation, spelling, exact word usage, and inferring meaning from context. In the study by Wulandari, Alaydrus, and Ni'mah (2020), stated that one of the problems leading to students' difficulties in learning vocabulary is the lack of time for English instructors to concentrate on teaching vocabulary as well as the low motivation of students to study. In this situation, student achievement in gaining vocabulary relies on their awareness of and ability to cope with their challenges.
Students will more readily find solutions to their problems if they are aware of the problems that influence their vocabulary. The students may practice seriously to expand their vocabulary source, and they also select suitable learning strategies for vocabulary acquisition. Vocabulary learning strategies are necessary in order to overcome the problems that learners face while learning English. Therefore, the researcher is interested in undertaking a study on 2 the challenges faced and strategies used by students during learning vocabulary.
In Vietnam, students receive a traditional English education background from primary school specifically from grade 3 (Ministry of Education and Training, 2022). At these levels, the local education system has placed more emphasis on evaluating students' reading literacy abilities as well as grammar than on teaching them practical language skills. Therefore, students tend to be inactive when expected to respond to English immediately, especially in listening and speaking skills. Despite having acquired the necessary vocabulary, students often find it challenging to put it into practice, which contributes to their sluggish responses.
Currently, in many educational institutions in general and the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Banking Academy in particular, there is not currently an official curriculum or guidebook for acquiring vocabulary for students. Therefore, many students have difficulty learning vocabulary. This study was conducted to discover the reality of vocabulary learning including awareness, attitude, difficulty in learning vocabulary, and vocabulary learning strategies that ATC students (Faculty of foreign languages students) apply to improve their situation.
