Among these resources, songs have garnered attention for their potential to enhance vocabulary acquisition and usage among students. This thesis aims to explore the influence of songs on EFL students’ vocabulary use, focusing on primary-level education, from the perspective of teachers. First of all, it is indeed to mention the importance of Vocabulary Acquisition.
Vocabulary acquisition is fundamental to language learning and proficiency. Without a robust vocabulary, learners may struggle to express themselves effectively and comprehend texts accurately. In EFL contexts, where exposure to the target language may be limited, finding effective strategies to expand vocabulary becomes crucial. According to Gersten (2015), “Songs play a significant role in language learning and acquisition by providing learners with exposure to authentic language use, fostering cultural awareness, and promoting affective engagement’.
They offer a multisensory learning experience that enhances vocabulary acquisition, grammar comprehension, and pronunciation skills.” Songs have long been recognized as valuable tools in language education. Their rhythmic and melodic features make them engaging and memorable for learners of all ages. Moreover, songs often contain rich and varied vocabulary, presented in context, which can aid in the retention and application of new words. Primary education lays the foundation for language development and proficiency.
At this stage, students are particularly receptive to innovative teaching methods that foster a positive attitude towards learning. Integrating songs into the curriculum can make the language learning experience enjoyable and effective for young learners. Elementary education poses several problems for second language learners. During the early stages of education, the ability to speak well and learn new words is crucial for students to excel in reading and writing.
Based on the researcher's pedagogical experience, it was observed that almost all students get pleasure from singing, and that the language acquired via songs is more comprehensible and applicable in conversational contexts. Consequently, she has dedicated a significant amount of time to promoting the development of vocabulary and spoken communication skills via the use of music. Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping students’ language learning experiences. Their insights into the effectiveness of different pedagogical approaches, including the use of songs, are invaluable.
By examining teachers’ perspectives on the influence of songs on students’ vocabulary use, this thesis seeks to provide practical insights for educators. This research investigates the potential efficacy of using singing as a method to enhance written language skills. The primary inquiry is whether music and song may assist English Language Learners in accurately using new vocabulary terms in their written work. The objective of this inquiry is to comprehend the methods of instructing and reinforcing the acquisition of a second language to pupils by means of songs.
There is widespread discontent among students, parents, faculty, and administrators regarding the state of English proficiency in higher education. Educators in Vietnam have noted a concerning trend: students’ lack of vocabulary and proficiency in both listening and speaking English. To encourage EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers to adapt their pedagogical approaches, it is necessary to execute modifications immediately. Among these innovative methods of instruction, singing English lessons is often considered the most straightforward and effective.
The result is an inviting classroom environment that piques students’ interest in studying the target language (Georgi Lozanov, 1979, cited in Brown, 2001; Mora, 2000). Since most people like singing, it is commonly believed that students will naturally learn the target language in a relaxed and stress-free setting. Teachers hope that by focusing on their pupils' passions, they will inspire them to study the language more successfully.2 Aims and Objectives of the Study The aims of this research are to: 1. To investigate how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers perceive the influence of songs on vocabulary usage among primary school students at a primary school in Ninh Binh.
To explore some ways employed by EFL teachers to integrate songs into vocabulary instruction. Hence, the objective of this quantitative study is to analyze the impact of utilizing music as a tool for teaching vocabulary. Consequently, upon completion of this research, readers would possess a tangible evaluation of the effects of vocabulary instruction through music and its implications for curriculum enhancement. This would be accomplished by doing a comprehensive examination of existing literature and a critical evaluation of the results.
The study will demonstrate the potential benefits of incorporating music into regular reading exercises to address the diverse reading abilities of pupils. Children have a strong affinity for singing; music enhances the process of acquiring knowledge and when studying is enjoyable, kids are more inclined to be motivated to learn. Engaging in singing activities exposes youngsters to unfamiliar vocabulary and abstract ideas. Music enhances cognitive focus, enhances auditory perception, and fosters the growth of verbal communication abilities.
Music is an enjoyable method of learning, and the songs acquired will be ingrained in the students' long- term memory, aiding them in becoming lifelong readers.3 Significance of the Study The objective of this research is to investigate familiar methodologies for instructing the English language. The outcomes of this research are expected to provide instructors with confidence in using songs as an alternative strategy to strengthen students' comprehension of vocabulary, in addition to the current grammar teaching approaches. This would ideally aid in enhancing pupils' comprehension of English grammar.
