I. Năng lực từ vựng và cú pháp chiến lược trong tiếng Anh

Nghiên cứu tập trung vào đánh giá năng lực từ vựng và cú pháp chiến lược trong tiếng Anh của sinh viên năm nhất tại Đại học Thái Nguyên. Kết quả cho thấy, sinh viên sử dụng chiến lược học tập để cải thiện kỹ năng giao tiếp. Tuy nhiên, khả năng từ vựng của họ còn hạn chế, đặc biệt trong các lĩnh vực như từ vựng, thành ngữ và cấu tạo từ. Trong khi đó, cú pháp trong tiếng Anh cũng là một thách thức lớn, đặc biệt là các thì động từ và câu trực tiếp/gián tiếp.

1.1. Năng lực từ vựng

Năng lực từ vựng của sinh viên năm nhất được đánh giá thông qua các bài kiểm tra và khảo sát. Kết quả cho thấy, sinh viên gặp khó khăn trong việc sử dụng từ vựng chính xác, đặc biệt là các thành ngữ và cấu tạo từ. Tuy nhiên, họ thể hiện khả năng tốt hơn trong việc sử dụng từ đồng nghĩa và từ trái nghĩa. Điều này cho thấy cần có các bài tập thực hành tập trung vào việc mở rộng vốn từ và cải thiện kỹ năng sử dụng từ vựng trong các ngữ cảnh cụ thể.

1.2. Cú pháp chiến lược

Cú pháp chiến lược được đánh giá qua khả năng sử dụng các cấu trúc ngữ pháp trong tiếng Anh. Sinh viên gặp khó khăn trong việc sử dụng các thì động từ và chuyển đổi giữa câu trực tiếp và gián tiếp. Tuy nhiên, họ thể hiện sự tiến bộ trong các lĩnh vực như sự hòa hợp chủ ngữ - động từ, đại từ tham chiếu và cụm từ, mệnh đề. Các chiến lược học tập hiệu quả cần được áp dụng để cải thiện kỹ năng này.

II. Thực trạng học tiếng Anh của sinh viên năm nhất

Nghiên cứu chỉ ra rằng, sinh viên năm nhất tại Đại học Thái Nguyên gặp nhiều khó khăn trong việc học tiếng Anh. Phần lớn sinh viên đến từ các vùng nông thôn, nơi tiếng Anh không được coi trọng. Họ thường học trong các lớp lớn với số lượng lên đến 60-80 sinh viên, dẫn đến việc thiếu sự tương tác và thực hành. Điều này ảnh hưởng đến khả năng ngôn ngữ và kỹ năng giao tiếp của họ.

2.1. Khó khăn từ phía sinh viên

Sinh viên thường coi tiếng Anh là một môn học khó và không hứng thú với các bài học. Họ thiếu kỹ năng ngôn ngữ cơ bản, đặc biệt là trong giao tiếp. Mặc dù đã học tiếng Anh từ cấp trung học, nhiều sinh viên vẫn không thể thực hiện một cuộc hội thoại đơn giản. Điều này cho thấy sự cần thiết của việc cải thiện phương pháp giảng dạy và tạo ra các bài tập thực hành phù hợp.

2.2. Khó khăn từ phía giáo viên

Giáo viên cũng gặp nhiều thách thức trong việc giảng dạy tiếng Anh. Họ cần được đào tạo thêm về phương pháp giảng dạy tiếng Anh hiện đại và cách tiếp cận phù hợp với nhu cầu của sinh viên. Nghiên cứu đề xuất rằng, giáo viên nên tham gia các khóa đào tạo và hội thảo để nâng cao kỹ năng giảng dạy và hỗ trợ sinh viên tốt hơn.

III. Bài tập thực hành và ứng dụng thực tiễn

Nghiên cứu đã đề xuất các bài tập thực hành nhằm cải thiện năng lực từ vựng và cú pháp chiến lược của sinh viên. Các bài tập này được thiết kế dựa trên kết quả đánh giá và nhu cầu thực tế của sinh viên. Chúng tập trung vào việc phát triển kỹ năng ngôn ngữ và khả năng giao tiếp thông qua các hoạt động tương tác và thực hành.

3.1. Thiết kế bài tập thực hành

Các bài tập thực hành được thiết kế để giúp sinh viên cải thiện từ vựng và cú pháp trong tiếng Anh. Chúng bao gồm các hoạt động như luyện tập từ vựng, sử dụng thành ngữ, và thực hành các cấu trúc ngữ pháp. Các bài tập này được xây dựng dựa trên các chiến lược học tập hiệu quả và phù hợp với trình độ của sinh viên.

3.2. Ứng dụng thực tiễn

Các bài tập thực hành không chỉ giúp sinh viên cải thiện kỹ năng tiếng Anh mà còn tạo cơ hội để họ áp dụng kiến thức vào thực tế. Điều này giúp sinh viên tự tin hơn trong giao tiếp và sẵn sàng cho các thách thức trong môi trường học tập và làm việc quốc tế. Nghiên cứu cũng đề xuất rằng, các bài tập này nên được đưa vào chương trình giảng dạy chính thức để đạt hiệu quả cao nhất.

Banaag Summary English as an international language is spoken in many countries both as native and as a second or foreign language.

It is the world’s dominant language because aside from being designated as an official among sixty two nations, it has the greatest number of speakers. In most international organization, English is the official and working language aside from being the most taught foreign language across the globe. People with knowledge in English language have better career and pay as well as communication with the outside world. e iv THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY Socialist Republic of Vietnam Republic of the Philippines In globalization where English language and communication play a crucial role, the ability to communicate in English is now a necessity.

People with different linguistic background believe that if one communicates in English fluently and proficiently he has an edge over the other since English as the language of the global village serves as a neutral language to all. This study aimed to assess the strategic, lexical and syntactic competencies in English of Freshman students in Thai Nguyen University. The subjects of the study comprised of 382 college students selected through random sampling out of 8,540 total population and 57 teachers of the five universities in Thai Nguyen City. Descriptive method of research was utilized with teacher made test and survey questionnaire as instruments used in gathering data.

Results of the study indicate that majority of the freshman students of Thai Nguyen University employed strategic competencies to cope and promote their communication skills. In terms of lexical competencies, freshman students have poor performance in the areas of vocabulary, idioms and word formation but have better performance in synonyms and antonyms. As regards to syntactic competencies, freshman students demonstrate poor performance in the areas of verb tenses, direct and indirect speech, but have e v THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY Socialist Republic of Vietnam Republic of the Philippines better or remarkable performance in the areas of subject verb agreement, pronoun references and phrases and clauses. Further, there is no significant relationship that exists between students’ lexical and syntactic competencies.

Teachers’ assessed that freshman students did not frequently used or practice their lexical and syntactic skills as indicated by their mean score of 3. There exists a relationship between teachers’ assessment and the level of students’ lexical and syntactic competencies. The drill exercises formulated contains activities geared towards improving freshman students’ lexical and syntactic competencies. The study recommended that English teachers handling the subjects maybe given more trainings and workshops in teaching content areas of the course; that the proposed drill exercises maybe presented to school administrators for review, suggestions and evaluation; and that follow up studies maybe conducted on aspects related to the variables of the study.

It is also the language that plays an important role in government diplomacy, science, medicine and other profession.

In the world also connected by bits and bytes, English language is also important as it emerged as a common vehicle for communication. In globalization where English language and communication play a crucial role, the ability to communicate in English is now a necessity. People with different linguistic background believe that if one communicates in English fluently and proficiently he has an edge over the others since English as the language of the global village serves as a neutral language to all. In many countries, English has become the language of power and prestige.

As a gatekeeper to social and economic progress, many countries give importance to English language as it serves as a pathway towards progress and learning. Understanding and communicating English is a factor for a person to learn and progress faster because most of the information is available in the English language and for that reason to be globally competitive, e 2 THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY Socialist Republic of Vietnam Republic of the Philippines communicating effectively in that language is a must. As an international language, English is spoken in many countries both as native and as a second or foreign language. People with knowledge in English language have better career and pay as well as communication with the outside world. Further, often referred to as the world’s language, English is spoken widely. In a number of jobs, professions and fields, a working knowledge of English becomes a need.

Knowledge also of the English language to enhance educational attainment through improved communication ability is also important. English as the lingua franca of the modern times of business and of popular culture is also the language of computers and internet aside from being the language of globalization of international business, politics and diplomacy. It enables people of different countries to converse and do business with each other. The narrowing of cultural linguistic diversity, expansion of cultural and linguistic divergence as well as information and media advancement are some of the contribution of English language to globalization. One of the biggest advantages of a country in a global job market is the proficiency of the skilled workers in the English language. In the field of education, proficiency in the English language also improves academic performance of students. Proficiency in the English language has been identified as a requisite in the globalized economy with countries having a large number of its population capable of communicating in English being rewarded with economic advantages.

In Asian countries, this trend has been realized by both governments and individuals and are thus pushing the wide interest in English language study in the last ten years.
