I. Tổng quan về việc nâng cao từ vựng tiếng Anh cho sinh viên

Việc nâng cao từ vựng tiếng Anh là một yếu tố quan trọng trong quá trình học tập của sinh viên ngành ngoại ngữ tại Đại học Công nghiệp TP.HCM. Từ vựng không chỉ là nền tảng để xây dựng câu mà còn là công cụ giúp sinh viên diễn đạt ý tưởng một cách chính xác và hiệu quả. Nghiên cứu cho thấy rằng việc mở rộng từ vựng có thể cải thiện kỹ năng giao tiếp, đọc hiểu và viết của sinh viên. Tuy nhiên, nhiều sinh viên vẫn chưa nhận thức được tầm quan trọng của việc này.

1.1. Tầm quan trọng của từ vựng trong việc học tiếng Anh

Từ vựng đóng vai trò trung tâm trong việc phát triển kỹ năng ngôn ngữ. Theo Neuman & Dwyer (2009), từ vựng là yếu tố quyết định khả năng giao tiếp hiệu quả. Việc có một vốn từ phong phú giúp sinh viên diễn đạt ý tưởng một cách rõ ràng và chính xác.

1.2. Các loại từ vựng cần thiết cho sinh viên

Sinh viên cần chú ý đến hai loại từ vựng chính: từ vựng thụ động và từ vựng chủ động. Từ vựng thụ động là những từ mà sinh viên hiểu nhưng chưa sử dụng được, trong khi từ vựng chủ động là những từ mà họ có thể sử dụng trong giao tiếp hàng ngày.

II. Những thách thức trong việc nâng cao từ vựng tiếng Anh

Mặc dù việc nâng cao từ vựng tiếng Anh rất quan trọng, nhưng sinh viên thường gặp phải nhiều thách thức. Một trong những vấn đề lớn nhất là thiếu động lực và phương pháp học tập hiệu quả. Nhiều sinh viên không nhận thức được rằng việc mở rộng từ vựng là cần thiết cho sự phát triển ngôn ngữ của họ.

2.1. Thiếu động lực trong việc học từ vựng

Nhiều sinh viên không thấy hứng thú trong việc học từ vựng, dẫn đến việc họ không đầu tư thời gian và công sức cần thiết. Điều này có thể ảnh hưởng tiêu cực đến khả năng giao tiếp của họ trong tương lai.

2.2. Khó khăn trong việc ghi nhớ từ vựng

Việc ghi nhớ từ vựng là một thách thức lớn. Sinh viên thường gặp khó khăn trong việc áp dụng từ mới vào ngữ cảnh thực tế, dẫn đến việc họ không thể sử dụng từ vựng một cách hiệu quả.

III. Phương pháp hiệu quả để nâng cao từ vựng tiếng Anh

Để nâng cao từ vựng tiếng Anh, sinh viên cần áp dụng những phương pháp học tập hiệu quả. Việc sử dụng công nghệ và tài liệu học tập phù hợp có thể giúp sinh viên mở rộng vốn từ của mình một cách nhanh chóng và hiệu quả.

3.1. Sử dụng ứng dụng học từ vựng

Các ứng dụng học từ vựng như Quizlet hay Anki giúp sinh viên ghi nhớ từ mới một cách dễ dàng thông qua các bài tập tương tác. Việc này không chỉ giúp sinh viên học từ vựng mà còn tạo sự hứng thú trong quá trình học.

3.2. Tham gia các hoạt động giao tiếp

Tham gia vào các hoạt động giao tiếp như câu lạc bộ tiếng Anh hoặc các buổi thảo luận giúp sinh viên thực hành từ vựng trong ngữ cảnh thực tế. Điều này giúp họ ghi nhớ từ vựng lâu hơn và sử dụng chúng một cách tự nhiên.

IV. Ứng dụng từ vựng trong giao tiếp tiếng Anh

Việc ứng dụng từ vựng trong giao tiếp là rất quan trọng. Sinh viên cần biết cách sử dụng từ vựng một cách linh hoạt trong các tình huống giao tiếp khác nhau. Điều này không chỉ giúp họ tự tin hơn mà còn nâng cao khả năng giao tiếp của họ.

4.1. Giao tiếp bằng lời nói

Khi giao tiếp bằng lời nói, việc sử dụng từ vựng phong phú giúp sinh viên diễn đạt ý tưởng một cách rõ ràng và mạch lạc. Họ cần luyện tập thường xuyên để cải thiện kỹ năng này.

4.2. Giao tiếp bằng văn bản

Việc viết cũng là một phần quan trọng trong việc sử dụng từ vựng. Sinh viên cần biết cách chọn từ phù hợp để diễn đạt ý tưởng của mình trong các bài viết, báo cáo hay luận văn.

V. Kết luận và triển vọng tương lai trong việc nâng cao từ vựng

Việc nâng cao từ vựng tiếng Anh cho sinh viên ngành ngoại ngữ tại Đại học Công nghiệp TP.HCM là một quá trình liên tục. Sinh viên cần nhận thức rõ tầm quan trọng của việc này và áp dụng các phương pháp học tập hiệu quả để đạt được kết quả tốt nhất.

5.1. Tương lai của việc học từ vựng

Với sự phát triển của công nghệ, việc học từ vựng sẽ ngày càng trở nên dễ dàng hơn. Sinh viên cần tận dụng các công cụ học tập hiện đại để nâng cao khả năng ngôn ngữ của mình.

5.2. Khuyến nghị cho sinh viên

Sinh viên nên chủ động tìm kiếm các nguồn tài liệu học tập phong phú và tham gia vào các hoạt động giao tiếp để cải thiện từ vựng. Việc này không chỉ giúp họ trong học tập mà còn trong sự nghiệp tương lai.

While the researchers have conducted many investigations on the important roles of vocabulary in English, the challenges as well as learning methods have not been investigated.

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the important roles of vocabulary expansion in improving English skills, the challenges and approaches to learn English vocabulary among English majors at Faculty of Foreign Languages of Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City. The researcher used quantitative research to collect data. The questionnaires were distributed to 300 participants both offline and online through Google Form. The results revealed that one third of the FFL English majors are not aware of the crucial roles of vocabulary expansion in improving English skills.

Besides, failure to define multiple meanings of words, and lack of motivation are common obstacles that the English majors often face. Also, the results show that the English majors learn more passive vocabulary than active vocabulary. They used two main methods including listening to music and watching movies to expand passive vocabulary. In addition, using mobile apps and engaging in conversations were used to enrich active vocabulary by most the English majors.

The above-mentioned aspects of enriching vocabulary in this study may be of importance in explaining the reasons why English majors at FFL of IUH should be aware of in learning English. The researcher also offers some recommendations and implications to help the English majors overcome difficulties they may face in expanding English vocabulary. Consequently, to learn a foreign language, learners need to pay attention to the smallest factor – vocabulary. Vocabulary is not only the basic element needed to create a sentence, but the combination of many words helps learners convey their opinions. So, expanding vocabulary is urgent and essential for improving English skills. Moreover, in the process of expanding their vocabulary, learners may face a number of difficulties that make learners feel frustrated when they do not achieve the results they want.

In fact, most learners are primarily interested in practicing grammar exercises instead of enriching vocabulary. Therefore, this study will point out some challenges in expanding vocabulary so that learners can avoid and learn more effectively. In addition, knowing how to expand the vocabulary is no less important because gaining a new vocabulary will depend partly on the method that learners apply. The reality shows that there are a variety of ways for the learners to learn vocabulary, however; learners are overwhelmed by too many choices and unable to choose anyway, so this study also directs learners to effective vocabulary expansion methods they are looking for.

With the desire to give the learners help, this study aims to generalize learners with different perspectives on the importance of vocabulary expansion for improving English skills purposes, the challenges as well as approaches learners can apply when enriching vocabulary. I hope that what I find and suggest through this study will help language learners in general and the English majors at Faculty of Foreign Language at Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City learn English vocabulary better.2 Research objectives This study is intended to find out the important roles of vocabulary expansion to improve English skills among the English majors at FFL of IUH. In addition, it aims to investigate many difficulties that FFL students are facing while learning vocabulary. Also, this study suggests several methods with a view to helping the English majors at FFL of IUH expand vocabulary to improve their English skills.

Therefore, this study includes the English majors of Faculty Foreign Language at the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City freshmen to seniors to find out what their needs are. In addition, because of the researcher's limited ability, time constraints, and narrowed-scaled study, this study only comprises about 300 students at FFL of IUH.
