Vocabulary Power simplifies the process to make vocabulary acquisition effective and interesting. THE LATEST RESEARCH The Most Important Words Research shows that it is possible but not probable for the human mind to learn 1,000 new words a year (Nation 2001).
In light of this, it is no surprise that English language learners are often frustrated by their limited vocabulary. Even if they manage to learn 1,000 words a year, the words they acquire may not be those that they need for academic and professional success. Vocabulary Power solves this problem by teaching the words that are most worthy of their time and attention. Of the 100,000+ words in the English language, only the 2,000 most frequent words (compiled in the General Service List) are necessary for students to understand at least 80% of daily conversation and writing (Nation 2002).
If students know the 2,000 most frequent words in English, in conjunction with 570 high frequency academic words found on the Academic Word List (AWL), they may understand close to 90% of academic text (Nation 2001, Coxhead 2000). The combined knowledge of the General Service List (GSL) and the Academic Word List (AWL) will strengthen your students’ ability to understand a textbook, follow an academic lecture, or read a newspaper with ease. ¢ Vocabulary Power 1 teaches Low Intermediate students words from the GSL. ¢ Vocabulary Power 2 teaches Intermediate students more challenging words from the GSL and words from the AWL.
¢ Vocabulary Power 3 teaches Advanced students more challenging words from the AWL. Effective Methodology Vocabulary Power is different from most vocabulary books because it is based on research on memory. Memorizing a word often requires that it be encountered seven or more times. It is important that words are not simply seen on each occasion, but encountered in new contexts, retrieved, and used (Nation 2001).
Vocabulary Power exposes students to each word in at least eight different contexts. This not only fixes new words in the memory, it offers learners a rich understanding of words. The eight different exposures follow a process approach, guiding the learner through the cognitive stages of noticing, retrieval, and generation. This approach teaches learners not only to recognize and understand a word, but also produce it.
HIGH INTEREST CONTENT Vocabulary Power is unique because it makes vocabulary learning enjoyable. Examples are modern and realistic. The readings are adapted from articles in current newspapers, magazines, or online news sources on a variety of up-to-date topics. Students are encouraged to apply new words to their own lives, making vocabulary more relevant and useful.
CLASSROOM FRIENDLY FORMAT Each chapter is organized as follows: ¢ Words in Context: understanding new words from context ¢ Words and Definitions: matching the words with their definition (or adapted definition) from the Longman Dictionary of American English ¢ Comprehension Check: checking comprehension of the words ¢ Word Families: expanding knowledge of the words with word families ¢ Same Word, Different Meaning: expanding knowledge of the words with multiple meanings ¢ Words in Sentences: using the words to complete sentences ¢ Words in Collocations and Expressions: understanding collocations and expressions featuring the words to improve memory and activate production ¢ Words in a Reading: using the words to complete a reading adapted from a current news article ¢ Words in Discussion: applying the words to real life with lively discussion questions ¢ Words in Writing: using the words in writing about a relevant topic In addition: ¢ Ten Quizzes throughout the book make it easy for teachers and students to check the students’ progress. e The Word Builder exercises and charts in the Appendix also provide an opportunity to focus on the meaning and use of word parts. e A complete Answer Key (for all exercises and quizzes) is provided in a separate booklet. Vocabulary Power can be used as a supplement to reading, writing, grammar, or speaking classes.
It can be used in class or assigned as homework. It can also be used as a self-study text. This flexibility makes the book an easy way to strengthen the academic curriculum of a class. A new academic word list.
