Nguyen Thuong Lang INTRODUCTION 1. The Urgency Of The Topic In the context of increasing globalization, trade between countries is growing rapidly. Countries are always looking to expand their trade activities through the formation of agreements, participation in organizations, or signing bilateral and multilateral agreements.
However, at bilateral and even more multilateral negotiation tables, countries are always trying to find the most favorable agreement for their country, which can lead to conflicting interests between the parties. Therefore, negotiation in international trade plays a crucial role in balancing the interests of the parties involved in the negotiation, thus achieving a win-win agreement. In a negotiation with a composition of many parties from different countries, it is essential to understand and appreciate how countries approach and interact through negotiation. This is because differences in values, perspectives, and negotiation methods can lead to both misunderstandings and conflicts.
In an international trade negotiation, each party involved has different starting points, bringing different perspectives, lifestyles, thoughts, goals, and missions to the negotiating table. Therefore, to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings and conflicts, as well as to increase the persuasiveness of the negotiator, it is essential to understand the culture and negotiation style of a country. Regarding the research subject, Thailand is a Southeast Asian nation with a population exceeding 71 million, making it the second most populous country in Southeast Asia and the 20th worldwide. Thailand actively participates in international organizations including the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The country has extensive diplomatic relations with nations across the globe. Vietnam stands as an important partner to Thailand within the region. Thailand boasts a developed market economy, ranking as the second- largest economy in Southeast Asia after Indonesia. In 2022, Thailand's GDP reached $1.482 trillion USD, with a per capita GDP of $7,631 USD.
The country relies on agriculture, with key crops including rice, rubber, sugar cane, and fruits. Its industrial sector is robust, with significant industries such as food processing, automobile manufacturing, electronics, and textiles. Thailand is renowned for its tourism, attracting around 20 million international visitors in 2022. With consistently high annual GDP growth rates, the nation's per capita income falls within the lower middle-income range. Abundant labor resources and significant export potential contribute to Vietnam's trade surplus, which has grown over recent years. The Vietnamese government's efforts to promote trade, especially through participation in trade agreements like EVFTA, UK-VFTA, and CPTPP, have played a role in these achievements.
Among its cooperative partners, Australia holds considerable potential due to geographic and demographic similarities.2: Vietnam's Trade Balance, 2012 - 2022 Source: data.org Student: Pham Quang Vu 2 Class:International Economics EEP 62B International Economic Negotiation Instructor: Assoc. Nguyen Thuong Lang Given these reasons, the author has chosen the topic "International Economic Negotiation Style (Thinking, Strategies, Practices) of Thailand and Vietnam's Adaptation" with the goal of analyzing and comparing the negotiation styles of Thailand and Vietnam. This research aims to propose strategies for Vietnam to adapt to Thailand's negotiation style in the context of international economic integration. The Research Overview Several prior studies have highlighted distinct characteristics in the negotiation styles of Vietnam and Thailand.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (2019) identified three fundamental differences in the international economic negotiation styles of Vietnam and Thailand, including: Negotiation Style: Vietnamese individuals often employ a direct and straightforward negotiation style, while Thai counterparts prefer an indirect and diplomatic approach. Vietnamese negotiators tend to address issues head-on, whereas Thai negotiators tend to avoid conflicts and contradictions. Relationship Building Approach: Vietnamese negotiators emphasize the importance of building personal relationships during negotiations, while Thai negotiators prioritize establishing professional relationships. Vietnamese negotiators prefer face-to-face meetings, while Thai negotiators often opt for communication through phone or email.
Language and Gestures: Vietnamese negotiators typically use direct language and strong gestures during negotiations, whereas Thai negotiators employ friendly language and gentle gestures. In another study, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao (2021) also highlighted differences between the international economic negotiation styles of Vietnam and Thailand, which include: Perceptions of Time: Vietnamese individuals value time and tend to be hasty during negotiations, while Thai individuals prioritize comfort and tend to delay negotiations. Value System: Vietnamese individuals value collective and community- oriented values, while Thai individuals emphasize personal and family values. Notions of Hierarchy: Vietnamese individuals place significance on hierarchy and status, while Thai individuals value equality.
