Student: Hoang Thi Thanh Huyen – ID: 21A7510058 ix BANKING ACADEMY GRADUATION THESIS FOREIGN LANGUAGE FACULTY CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.
Introduction Personal credit has been strongly developed in the world since the early 80s of the twentieth century. Banks not only limit credit extension activities to corporate customers, but have been much more focused on individual customers. In Vietnam, lending to individual customers only started in the years 1993-1994. Initially, it only focused on installment loans; and the products provided were still monotonous.
In recent years, personal lending tends to flourish along with socio-economic development. With a large size of population, over 98 million people (as of 2021), of which is mainly a young population, with increasing income levels and modern lifestyles as well as consumption needs to improve and raise living standards, the bank's personal credit products quickly attracted lots of customers. Therefore, the personal credit segment promises to be a potential and highly competitive business segment. Over the past years, the banking industry has drastically implemented many solutions to increase people's access to capital, including promoting the application of science and technology in building and deploying personal credit products; development of online services; expanding network, diversifying products and services; reducing interest rates, simplifying lending procedures to meet the borrowing needs of businesses and people in all classes.
Especially nowadays, the economy is facing many difficulties and challenges due to the complicated and lasting effects of the pandemic; therefore, personal credit activities play a leading role in meeting the capital needs of customers to ensure expenses and to give support to people in financial difficulty. This thesis will provide an overview of personal credit activities at banks in general, and in-depth analysis of the current situation and assessment of personal credit quality at BIDV Quang Trung in particular. Thereby providing appropriate solutions as well as useful recommendations in order to contribute to the development, completion and diversification of personal credit services. Background of the study The Covid-19 pandemic, which originated at the end of 2019, is still posing huge challenges and enormous difficulties for the entire economy. From the end of April 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out strongly, making production and business activities of enterprises as well as people's lives more difficult. Due to the complicated and prolonged development of the pandemic, many businesses had to suspend production, which also negatively affected many households' income, especially those with low incomes such as workers and small traders. According to Vietnam Financial Times (VFT), the average income of employees in 2021 was 5.7 million VND per month, reduced by 32,000 VND compared to 2020.
Unemployment rate in the working age was 3.54% compared to the previous year. In general, the situation of labor and employment in 2021 had more difficulties than in 2020. Followed by the demand for consumer loans to serve daily life, cover tuition fees, purchase equipment, etc. tends to increase.
Being concerned about accessing bank loans due to the barriers of documents and procedures as well as the time of transaction process, many people have turned to “black credit” sources because of its ease, speed and convenience, leading to serious consequences. Grasping this situation, the banking industry has taken part, actively implemented solutions to help people overcome credit difficulties through network expansion, timely supply of banking products and services, especially solutions to enhance access to capital, promptly support customers affected by the pandemic, and repel "black credit". The representative of the State Bank said that despite being negatively affected by the Covid- 19 pandemic, the whole economy's credit increased at the beginning of the year 2021 and was higher than the same period in 2020, promptly meeting the capital needs of the economy. By the end of 2021, the credit of the whole economy increased by 13.53% compared to the end of 2020.
Sixteen commercial banks (accounting for 75% of the total outstanding loans of the economy) have effectively reduced lending interest rates as committed to Banks’ Association. According to VietnamPlus, in the period from July 2021 Student: Hoang Thi Thanh Huyen – ID: 21A7510058 2 BANKING ACADEMY GRADUATION THESIS FOREIGN LANGUAGE FACULTY to the end of December 2021, sixteen commercial banks have spent 21,244 billion VND in profit to reduce lending interest rates for people and businesses, exceeding 5.13% compared to the initial reduction commitments.
