Along with that I really appreciate the help of my best friends - Melon team.
Without them I would have had difficulty completing this thesis. Finally, an honorable mention goes to those who have read and commented on my research paper. iv ABSTRACT This study was conducted to explore the teachers’ and secondary students’ perceptions when using Interactive smart boards in the English Speaking and Listening skill classrooms at Apax Leaders - Nguyen Chi Thanh Branch and to provide recommendations regarding how to use this tool in an effective way. The qualitative and quantitative approach were used in the research and data were gathered through a survey method with 189 secondary students and 14 teachers in Apax Leaders - Nguyen Chi Thanh Branch.
The data analysis revealed that both teachers and students found the use of Interactive smart boards effective in terms of bringing motivation, fun and variety along with better learning to the skill-focused class. However, there were some drawbacks that were found by the participants during using ISB. The solutions and suggestions to the problems were given by the researcher. Hopefully, all of the difficulties can be overcome in a short time so that applying ISB is easier and more effective.

The new learning methods with technological applications are progressively introduced to replace traditional teaching methods and enhance the productivity of learning foreign languages.
Hence, being aware of the urgency of the application of technology into education, Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) approved a project "The project to enhance the application of information technology in management and support of teaching - learning and scientific research activities contributes to improving the quality of education and training in the 2016-2020 period, with an orientation toward 2025". The project is to encourage applying technological devices in teaching to enhance the quality of Vietnam education. In this project, Interactive Smart Board (ISB), a digital device is mentioned in this study as a main supportive one in the English classroom, which is a new learning method with the technology approach. In recent years, English classrooms are equipped with technological devices such as laptops, tablet computers and other digital devices that have become more popular.
In fact, although the effects of the ISB have been confirmed in previous studies, the equipment and use of ISB in classrooms still are limited. In order to have an insight into this issue, I decided to choose Apax Leader – Nguyen Chi Thanh Branch (AL- NCT Branch) as the locale of the study. Apax Leaders have applied contemporary English learning methods with the installation of ISB in 100 percent of classrooms to make the classroom-learning environment more effective. Moreover, the fact that there is no study related to teachers' and students' views on the application of English skills classes in Vietnam helps to increase the significance of this study.
To this end, this study covers the topic "An analysis of teachers' and secondary students' perceptions in the use of Interactive smart board in English Speaking and Listening skill classrooms.2 Aims of the study The main purpose of this study is to investigate the views and perceptions of teachers and students in AL-NCT Branch when using ISB in English Speaking and Listening Skill Classes. From the results of this study, the study aims to give some suggestions in applying ISB in the English Speaking and Listening classes in an effective way.3 Scope of the study This study was conducted in Apax Leaders - Nguyen Chi Thanh Branch (AL-NCT Branch) with two groups of the participants including achers and secondary students. Besides, it only focuses on the perception of teachers and students on the use of ISB in learning English Speaking and Listening Skills. Therefore, other issues as the viewpoints and assessment of primary students will not be mentioned.
The data of responses were collected from February to May 2020.4 Research questions This study focused on finding out the effectiveness of ISB by analyzing the perceptions of teachers and secondary students. Due to this purpose, this study answers two research questions as follows: Question 1. What are the perceptions of the teachers about the use of Interactive smart boards in the English skill class? Question 2. What are the perceptions of the students about the use of Interactive smart boards in the English skill class? 1.5 Research methodology In this research, the data collection is obtained through survey methodology by means of questionnaires.
The questionnaires were designed by both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Questionnaires were transferred to an online platform (Google Forms). The Microsoft Excel version 2016 was used to analyze data collected via the questionnaire.6 Structure of thesis The main contents of this thesis consist of 5 chapters: In the first chapter - Introduction, the rationale, aims, scopes, methodology and the structure of this study are pointed out. Next, chapter 2 - Literature review illustrates definitions, operation, the use and the benefits of technology devices with the education.
Especially, this chapter shows the previous research over the world about the application ISB in English learning. In the third part, the study's methodology is described with the locale, the research design and the data collection process, etc. The following chapter presents the findings of data collection and the analysis of the perceptions of participants. Last but not least, the last chapter includes the summary part, the conclusion, some recommendations.1 Overview on technology a.
Definitions of technology There are various definitions of technology. According to Cambridge University Press defines technology is a particular method by which science is used for practical purposes. Besides, basing on Collins (2020) technology refers to methods, systems, and devices that are the result of scientific knowledge being used for practical purposes. Moreover, another definition of technology by David (2019) stated that technology is the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes or applications, whether in industry or in our everyday lives.
So, basically, whenever scientific knowledge is 3 used to achieve some specific purpose that is technology application. Technology usually involves a specific piece of equipment, but that equipment can be incredibly simple or complex. It can be anything from the discovery of the wheel, all the way up to computers and MP3 players. To sum up, technology is the sum of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation.
Technology can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, and the like, or it can be embedded in machines to allow for operation without detailed knowledge of their workings. Systems applying technology by taking an input, changing it according to the purpose, and then producing an outcome are referred to as technology systems or technological systems. Nowadays, with the spread and development of technology around the world, modern technology is referred to through high-tech products such as computers, smartphones, digital devices, and tablets and so on. The importance of applying technology in education According to Neil (2016) technology is now an integral part of education.
The past forty years have seen an exponential increase in computer processing power accompanied by major technological developments such as the Internet and mobile telephony. Smartphones, tablets or computerized devices are now common means of interacting with people, consuming media and generally living out many aspects of everyday life. Google and Wikimedia are the first places that millions of people turn to when wanting to access the information and find things out.
