Sincerely thanks! ii ABSTRACT Vietnam economy has seen dramatic transition in the last decade with favorable condition of growth, attracting more FDI businesses to enter and directly contribute to the positive prospect of the country. Samsung Display Vietnam is one typical FDI businesses which flourish thanks to combination of skillful Vietnamese labor force and high technological capital of the top leading Korean corporation. However, the leadership capability of Vietnamese managers in such a cultural context of Samsung Display Vietnam remains an issue which somehow hinders the organization to realize its full potentials to catch the opportunities.
In order to develop an insight of Vietnamese managers’ leadership capability at Samsung Display Vietnam, this study employs mixed research approach which combines quantitative and qualitative study. The quantitative component, which collected data from 520 employees of Samsung Display Vietnam aims to examine factors which affect leadership capability of Vietnamese managers at this organization. The conclusion was drawn upon various analytic techniques including descriptive statistics, reliability test, correlation analysis and multi-regression analysis. Meanwhile, the qualitative section, which bases on interviews of five Vietnamese managers at Samsung Display Vietnam, revealed an extensive issues of carrying out leadership in practice.
Based on the findings drawn out from both quantitative and qualitative studies, various recommendations were suggested for improving the leadership capability of Vietnamese managers. Key word: Vietnamese managers, leadership capability, leadership training iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES. i LIST OF FIGURES. Research objectives and questions.

Leaders that are able to inspire their teams and drive them to success have a clear vision for the organization's goals. The empirical evidence drawn from the most successful corporations by far have demonstrated that only proper leadership may drive the organization to thrive. Especially, in the wake of ever fierce competition of the modern business world, leadership becomes more crucial element which potentially shapes the competitive advantages and to distinguish business from other market rivals (Nielsen et. As a post-graduate candidate, I am motivated by this importance of organizational leader to engage in a study which focuses on leadership and recipe for becoming an effective leader.
However, since there is no universal formula for crafting leadership capability, leader needs to adapt flexibly into the organizational context. In the past decade, the high openness to foreign investment and integration of Vietnam to international business environment has attracted many foreign corporations to Vietnam. This offers not only opportunities for Vietnamese to get promoted in these organizations but also challenges in getting adapted for becoming effective leader. This drew me to the idea of examining the efficiency of leadership for Vietnamese managers at foreign environment of Samsung Display Company.
In fact, from my personal research about this topic, I identified the theoretical gap in academic research of leadership capability in foreign culture, especially the typical one of FDI businesses in Vietnam. While the vast majority of research papers by far attempt to address leadership capability from the perspective of Vietnamese culture, there remain no research tapping into the leadership in a mixed culture where Vietnamese culture must adapt. In fact, with the increase in number of FDI businesses in Vietnam, such condition of organizational culture is becoming more popular. Meanwhile, though this subject has been well studied worldwide, the absence of such studies in Vietnam is causing confusion for leadership operation for 1 Vietnamese managers in these organization.
Therefore, I believe that my study will offer a chance to fill in such theoretical gap, thus benefiting not only Samsung Display Vietnam but also any FDI business sharing the similar structure 1. Research background The epidemic of coronavirus has put a lot of pressure on corporate and non- business leaders alike. Employees and other stakeholders are frightened by the human toll of COVID-19. Executives have a difficult time responding to the epidemic because of its sheer size and unpredictability.
A "landscape-scale crisis" is exactly what we're dealing with: an unexpected occurrence or chain of events with an immense magnitude and speed, resulting in bewilderment, feelings of lost control, and intense emotional disturbance (Beilstein et. Amidst this gloomy context, Samsung Display Company remains standing out as an excellent organization, making profit of nearly $4 billion in 2020 (HanoiTimes, 2021). Meanwhile, Samsung Display Company still employs a large labor force of Vietnamese, with a considerable number of managers being Vietnamese. This renders Samsung Display Company an ideal case study for examining the leadership efficiency of Vietnamese managers in a context of foreign organization 1.
Research objectives and questions Objective 1: To investigate the leadership factors contributing to efficiency of Vietnamese managers working for Samsung Display Company in the period of 2020-2021. Objective 2: To examine the leadership problems encountered by Vietnamese managers in Samsung Display Company Objective 3: To figure out solutions which enable Vietnamese Managers to enhance leadership capability and thus contribute more effectively to the functional roles in Samsung Display Company In order to fulfill these objectives, it is imperative to address the following questions Q1: Which factors contributes to leadership capability of Vietnamese managers in Samsung Display? 2 Q2: How have recent changes in macro and micro environment affected the leadership capability of Vietnamese managers in Samsung Display? Research subject and scope Research subject: Samsung Display Company in Vietnam, with focus on employees who are Vietnamese holding managerial title in the organization Time limit: The scope of research is also set in the last two years to capture the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which further exacerbated the leadership need at the organization 1. Research contribution Theoretical contribution: The research aims to investigate the Leadership ability of Vietnamese Manager.
Therefore, the study will tap into two major areas: (1) factors affecting leadership capability and (2) specific factors constituting to leadership within the Vietnamese culture. On one hand, the research is expected to contribute vastly to the knowledge of leadership, particularly in regard with the quality of leader and areas for leader to become more effective. Furthermore, by reviewing the factors driving Vietnam leader’s Capability in the context of Korean business as Samsung Display, the research will help uncovering the formula of forming effective leader in multi-cultural atmosphere. This can leverage the value of this study, considering that the demand for leadership understanding in internationalized context is becoming urgent than ever.
Practical contribution: The research takes account into the leadership problem of a specific business as Samsung Display Vietnam, thus the primary benefits will be attributed to managers of Samsung Display Vietnam. The study will not only help revealing the problem related to leadership in the organization but it also suggests relevant solutions for addressing the problem that organization is encountering. Additionally, the outcome of this study can provide guideline for any FDI corporation to train and manage Vietnamese executives so that organizational Capability can be optimized under the enhanced leadership 3 CHAPTER 2 - LITERATURE REVIEW 2. Leadership and leadership capabilities 2.
Leadership versus management Excellent business operation cannot be delivered without competent management and leadership. Although they have certain commonalities, the two may call for quite distinct mindsets, sets of abilities, and modes of conduct. In order to be successful, both excellent leaders and competent managers need to have strong management abilities. Leaders will envision what's possible, share that vision with followers, and work to develop methods that will bring that vision to fruition.
They inspire others and know how to persuade others to help them accomplish their objectives. Managers make sure everything is in order and that all available resources are used effectively. A manager's ability to lead is especially important in the resource-limited and challenging settings typical of many low- and middle- income nations. Some managers do not lead by example, while others do so without holding formal management roles, therefore it would be wrong to generalize that all managers are also good leaders.
It is for this reason that the distinction between leaders and managers remains a source of contention. Many of the same skills are required for management and leadership, although some experts maintain that the two terms are not interchangeable (Bass, 1981).
