Phương pháp phân tích bao gồm việc xác định các mô hình ẩn dụ cơ bản như 'LIFE IS A JOURNEY' hay 'ARGUMENT IS WAR'.

The research uncovers a rich tapestry of metaphorical frameworks strategically employed by Austen to illuminate the complexities of love, marriage, and societal norms in early 19th-century England. Key findings include exploring the metaphorical themes and the images that author Jane Austen often used to apply metaphor in her works. Each novel showcases distinct metaphorical themes that align with its central concerns.

The study demonstrates how Austen skillfully interweaves structural, ontological, and orientational metaphors to create multidimensional representations of her characters’ inner lives and social realities. By elucidating the cognitive underpinnings of Austen’s literary artistry, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of her enduring appeal and relevance. It also offers fresh insights into the role of conceptual metaphors in shaping narrative structure, character depth, and thematic resonance in literature more broadly. INTRODUCTION In this chapter, an introduction to the thesis is presented, which includes the background of the study, the aims and objectives of the study, and the research questions. The study’s scope and significance are also provided in this chapter. At the end of this chapter, the researcher provides an overview of the chapters in this research. Background of the study Metaphor has long been recognized as a fundamental human language and cognition element.

It goes beyond a poetic device or rhetorical flourish and permeates everyday speech and thought, shaping our understanding of abstract concepts through more concrete, experiential domains. According to Zhang (2009), metaphor serves as a vehicle for comprehending the world rather than just a rhetorical device. The study of metaphor is a relatively recent branch of linguistic research that has captivated scholars since ancient times. This field consists of two primary perspectives: traditional metaphor aligned with rhetorical studies and modern metaphor rooted in cognitive linguistics.

Traditionally, metaphor was regarded as a figure of speech, an artistic tool to embellish language and convey meaning through comparison. In Aristotle’s renowned work “Poetics,” he defines metaphor as “giving the thing a name that belongs to something else; the transference being either from genus to species, or from species to genus, or species to species, or on the grounds of analogy” (Chun, 2005). The traditional view holds that metaphor is simply a rhetorical phenomenon, a shift from one word to another, enhancing the expressiveness and ornamentation of language. In the 20th century, there was a gradual shift in the understanding of metaphor.

Philosophers and linguists began recognizing its pervasive nature in everyday language and its potential cognitive functions. Richards (1936) proposed that metaphor was not just a matter of language but of thought, suggesting that it involved an “interaction” between two ideas. Black (1962) further developed this notion with his “interaction theory” of metaphor, arguing that metaphorical expressions create new meanings by bringing together different conceptual domains. These developments set the stage for a significant reconceptualization of metaphor that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s, fundamentally altering our understanding of language, thought, and the human conceptual system.

Since the 1980s, metaphor studies have taken on a 1 new perspective, as evidenced by “Metaphors We Live By,” co-authored by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). This work has revolutionized the core studies of metaphor in the linguistic field, proposing that metaphor is a matter of thought and action rather than merely a device of poetic imagination and rhetorical flourish. All of these studies illustrate the cognitive nature of metaphor, indicating that metaphor plays a role in mediating human understanding and worldview (Chun, 2005). The publication of “Metaphors We Live By” by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in 1980 marked a watershed moment in metaphor studies.

Lakoff and Johnson proposed that metaphor was not merely a linguistic phenomenon but a fundamental aspect of human cognition. They introduced the concept of “conceptual metaphor,” arguing that abstract concepts are systematically understood and experienced in terms of more concrete, physical concepts. According to Conceptual Metaphor Theory (abbreviated to CMT), metaphors are not isolated linguistic expressions but reflect underlying conceptual mappings between different domains of experience. CMT posits that these conceptual metaphors are grounded in bodily experiences and cultural contexts.

They arise from correlations in our everyday experiences and become entrenched in our cognitive systems, shaping how we think and reason about abstract concepts. The theory has had far-reaching implications across various disciplines, including linguistics, cognitive science, psychology, philosophy, and literary studies. It has provided new insights into how language reflects and shapes thought, how abstract reasoning is grounded in physical experience, and how cultural variations in metaphorical thinking can reveal worldview differences. In the realm of literature, CMT has provided invaluable insights into how authors employ language to convey complex ideas and emotions.

By analyzing the underlying conceptual metaphors in literary works, researchers can better understand the cognitive processes involved for both authors and readers. Additionally, this approach sheds light on the cultural and historical contexts that shape these metaphorical interpretations. In his work from 2005, Eagleton defines a novel as a work of fiction that often delves into human understanding and life experiences. Novels communicate various values related to society, culture, and education.

The novel, as a literary form, provides fertile ground for the study of conceptual metaphors. The novel emerged in its modern form in the 18th century and has become one of the most prominent and influential 2 literary genres. Its expansive nature allows for the development of complex characters, intricate plots, and detailed explorations of human thoughts, emotions, and social interactions. Novels present a distinctive opportunity to explore the conceptual frameworks of their authors and the societies they portray.

They construct intricate conceptual landscapes through elaborate narratives where abstract ideas are brought to life through tangible situations and experiences. This quality makes novels an ideal platform for manifesting and examining conceptual metaphors. The use of metaphor in novels transcends mere linguistic embellishment. Authors systematically employ metaphors to structure narratives, develop themes, and convey complex emotional and psychological states with depth and sophistication.

These metaphors operate at various levels, including the linguistic level (individual metaphorical expressions used in the text), conceptual level (underlying conceptual metaphors), and narrative level (extended metaphors or allegories structuring plot elements or themes). Analyzing these different levels of metaphor use allows researchers to gain insights into how authors conceptualize and communicate abstract ideas, reflect or challenge dominant metaphors of their time, and contribute to shaping readers’ understanding of complex concepts. In addition, novels frequently explore human experiences and emotions, which makes them valuable for analyzing how conceptual metaphors function in various cultural and historical settings. Novels enable us to observe how metaphorical thinking changes over time and differs between cultures, offering essential insights for studies on conceptual metaphor.

Jane Austen (1775-1817) holds a unique and significant position in English literature. She was born in Steventon, Hampshire, to a close-knit family of modest means but respectable social standing. This upbringing enabled Austen to develop a perceptive understanding of social interactions and a sharp wit that became defining features of her literary style. Austen lived during a significant period of social and cultural change in England.

The late 18th and early 19th centuries marked the transition from the Georgian era to the Regency period, characterized by evolving social norms, the rise of the middle class, and changing ideas about individual rights and personal freedom.
