Urgency of the topic Nowdays, our living environment is seriously affected by global warming, which has caused incalculable consequences such as: rising average temperatures, the appearance of many storms with great destructive power, drought occurs in many places, warming oceans causing sea levels to rise, melting ice, food shortages,. These changes are so pronounced that we can feel them on a daily basis. There are many causes of this situation including: industrialization of many factories, deforestation, explosion of personal transportation, excessive energy consumption,.
These causes are all caused by humans, and it is the responsibility of people to find solutions to overcome the above situation to bring a greener - cleaner - more beautiful Earth for future generations. Many influential organizations and individuals have voiced environmental concerns, and many countries around the world have begun to act by enacting laws or regulations on environmental protection guidelines for various industries. including finance - banking. Vietnam is not out of the above trend, when the Government has also identified this as an urgent issue that needs the cooperation of everyone, with the general orientation of not exchanging the environment for economic benefits in the short term.
In the world, there have been many successful countries and become models in the world of environmental protection such as Singapore, the Netherlands, Sweden,. However, reality shows that Vietnam is still a developing country, not having enough financial potential as well as infrastructure like advanced countries. According to energy agency statistics, CO2 emissions rose from 113 million tons to 236 million tons in the 10 years from 2010 to 2020. Besides, the awareness of many people as well as businesses about this issue has not been raised.
For individuals, littering indiscriminately or using plastic bags still seems to be a difficult habit for many people. For businesses, investing in advanced technologies or modern production lines consumes a lot of investment costs, thereby affecting profits. To solve this situation, besides the "green economy" orientation of the Government, the 1 intermediary role of the banking system is also extremely important in providing investment capital with the name "Green Credit". Green credit is an increasingly popular concept in the world, contributing to the success of environmental protection campaigns in many countries.
It not only helps reduce environmental pollution, but also brings many other benefits to businesses, banks as well as the economy. For businesses, they can access preferential capital from the Government's support policies, creating a foundation for sustainable development through technological innovation that will make businesses create competitive advantages with products that not only have inherent uses but also are environmentally friendly. For banks, they can also expand market share as well as enhance credibility and build a good image for the public. For the economy, green credit also contributes to sustainable growth, creating many new jobs and improving the quality of life.
With the above benefits, green credit has become an urgent need for commercial banks. In Vietnam, there are currently 31 credit institutions that have implemented green credit activities, as of June 2023. Although green credit has come into practice and tends to grow, legal obstacles have also made this development unable to develop further. As one of the 4 largest state-owned banks in Vietnam, Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam is one of the leading banks in exploiting green credit and always has a positive view on environmental protection.
This is an area that has always been closely concerned by the bank's leaders and has become a long-term goal in the future development orientation of the Bank.
