Elizabeth kết hợp giữa lịch sự âm tính (trình bày lý do, bày tỏ quan điểm) và chiến lược trực tiếp (khẳng định, phủ nhận rõ ràng). Cô sử dụng câu hỏi tu từ như "Can you deny that...?"

Refusing someone seems to be one of the most challenging acts for a Speaker, yet refusal of a marriage proposal is much more difficult. Understanding the way how politeness strategies affect the eventual outcome of communication makes participants more sensible and exquisite in managing their relationships and what affect the choice of language can help participants easily sympathize with each other. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research are excerpts containing politeness strategy of refusal utterances taken from three conversations of the marriage proposals in the novel.

The results show that four out of five types of politeness strategies of refusals are occupied by a character in the novel, namely Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, Off Record, and Don’t do the FTA. The usage of some impoliteness techniques is found also. In realizing the politeness strategies of those refusals, the character in the novel was influenced by sociological-cultural factors such as social distance, relative power, ranking imposition, and British society’s changes in the choices of politeness strategies. Key Words: Pragmatics, Politeness, Politeness Strategies, FTAs, Speech act of refusal, marriage proposals.

Statement of the problem Courtesy, which is one of the most concerned topics in applied linguistics, has always been an issue that has gotten a lot of attention from various professions in life, such as business, education, and politics then and now. Along with the development of the applied linguistics realm, there are several approaches to this issue, but the followings emerge as the most common: Grice sets an ideal standard for referring to polite behavior whereas Lakoff & Leech (1983) give out polite principles in the form of “do’s and don’t”. Brown and Levinson also go over how to deal with face- threatening communication behavior through politeness strategies.299) states “The human personality is a sacred thing; one dare not violate it nor infringe its bounds, while at the same time, the greatest good is in communion with other”. In any context of communication, both participants prefer carrying the intention to save interactants’ faces, but sometimes, it is impossible not to do face- threatening activities to get the final communicative target.

In the complex process of communication, to gain their target of discussion each interactant will show their suitable techniques that are under influence of variations of internal and external agents in terms of social norms and etiquettes. Brown and Levinson (1987) are said to be the most influential authors in terms of politeness theory. Brown and Levinson (1987) outline the primary of politeness in any relation to Speech Acts with five main politeness strategies like Bald on record, Positive politeness, negative politeness, Off-record and finally Don’t do the FTA. On top of that, the two authors go over factors influencing the choice of politeness strategies.

To gain a clear understanding of the mutual interplay between politeness strategies and the factors that influence them, it is best to study speech acts such as requests, commands, and especially refusal acts that deliver an intent that normally expresses a rejection. Brown & Levinson (1987) not only work out five super politeness strategies but also confirm that impoliteness is also a channel of politeness strategy. Referring to the 1 present academic research, the researcher first, sees a lot of academic papers completely worked on politeness strategies in various communicative situations, particularly in specific literary works. Literature is one of the aspects in which social norms and culture are vividly reflected.

In Literature, readers can see the close relationship between language and culture. The researcher realizes that there are many pieces of research on politeness strategies through speech acts like requests, and commands, but it seems not to have many relevant works yet on the refusal of marriage proposals, so it reminds her of Pride and Prejudice (1813) novel which is one of the most popular classics by British writer Jane Austen, in which a woman called Elizabeth rejects marriage proposals three times from two men. After reading the novel and relevant studies, the researcher is aware that there are already some research papers on this novel like Why rejecting proposals in Pride and Prejudice (2019) by Honda Agharazi explored 19th-century marriage, particularly it affected women under a patriarchal system, and how traditional sexual roles and stereotypes could lead on both problematic relationships and problem of identity and the self. Independence and traditional forms of masculinity can not co-exist together in a healthy relationship.

And, Elizabeth refused marriage proposals simply because she does not have love and compatibility. And Politeness strategies of request found in Pride and Prejudice movie (2013) by Asri Dwi shows that there are four types of politeness strategies of request which are used by the characters of Pride and Prejudice movie, those four strategies are Bald on record, Positive politeness, Negative politeness, and Off-record. Bald-on-record is the dominant strategy of requests in Pride and Prejudice movies. And in realizing politeness strategies of requests, they were influenced by payoff and relevant circumstances involving social distance, relative power, and raking of imposition.

However, there isn't yet a specific research paper on the issue of Politeness Strategies in refusals of marriage proposals expressed through the character in Pride and Prejudice based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theories. Moreover, the novel was written at the time when British social changes started in the early 16 century but reached their peak in the 1800s forward. Individual 2 autonomy- contemporaries called it “freedom” or “liberty”- therefore, was a new luxury that could now safely be indulged in by the well-to-do, and which modified and mitigated the rigidities of a society.
