Saving energy means saving on operating costs. The hotels use a lot of energy for daily activities and entertainment.
The high energy demand is due to the use of modem technical equipment such as air conditioners to provide comfort for a large number of guests. Most hotels meet their energy needs by purchasing energy produced from burning fossil energy, such as coal, oil, etc. This causes air pollution and changes the environment's temperature. > Manage water uses: In the operation of the hotel, in addition to the amount of water needed for each hotel room and the usual activities at the hotel such as kitchen and laundry, some other water needs such as swimming pools, lawns, and golf courses can require a very large amount of water.
Excessive water use can degrade or destroy local water resources, threatening the regular supply of water for local needs. These problems can be made worse in areas where peak tourist seasons comcide with dry periods. >» Manage sewage: The hotel discharges a significant amount of wastewater. Wastewater can be “gray water”, which 1s mostly from washing machines, sinks, showers, bathrooms, and gutters, or “black water”, which is wastewater from toilets and kitchen dishwashing liquid.
In some tourist destinations, these types of wastewater receive little or no treatment. Pollutants such as intestinal bacteria and chemicals are released directly into the environment. Poor wastewater treatment can cause soil and surface water pollution and degradation of tourism resources. >» Manage waste: Hotel emits large amounts of solid waste, packaging, food scraps, and cleaning and maintenance materials, some of which are toxic.
In many cases, waste is concentrated in inappropriate trash cans that are not sorted in the first place or discharged directly into the natural environment. Improper disposal of waste can cause soil and water pollution as contaminants seep through the piles into the ground. Improperly designed landfills can cause fires, odors, fly flies, and inefficient waste storage. Landfills containing hazardous materials such as paint cans and batteries can seriously contaminate water, air, and soil, threatening environmental safety and human health.
» Manage chemical uses: Chemicals used to clean hotel guest rooms or for recreational facilities such as swimming pools can contaminate local soil and water and may be hazardous to human health. Leaks of CFCs and HCFCs from refrigerators, air conditioners, and other refrigerating equipment as well as dry cleaning chemicals, aerosols, fire extinguishers, and foams, are chemicals that contribute to ozone layer depletion. >» Manage purchasing problem: Hotels must purchase a very large number of goods, including supplies for laundry and sanitation, food and drink, equipment, vehicles, stationery, furniture, bedding, and guest bathroom items. During production, use, and disposal, these items can cause negative impacts on the environment.
Product procurement decisions affect the amount of waste produced by the antibiotic as well as the potential for air, water, or soil pollution from the use or disposal of these products. Reason for choosing the topic: According to the information provided in the general situation section, our team believes that activities to improve and be environmentally friendly for a hotel, particularly the room department, are necessary. Because the room department is responsible for not only the customers' sleep but also their health, it should be the first place in the hotel where environmental activities are implemented. However, based on the current state of affairs, Hotels in Vietnam are still not enthusiastic about this issue because environmental products or services come at a relatively high cost, which can directly affect hotel revenue.
However, environmental friendliness is necessary, so our group of students decided to choose this topic to find out and analyze the root of the existing problems. The barriers that have been making customers hotels shy when applying activities for the environment. 1 CHAPTER 1: OVERVIEW OF HOTEL 1.1 History of establishment and development: 1.1 Marriott established history Figure 1. Marriott's hall of history.
John Willard Marriott and his wife Alice Sheets started Marnott on May 20, 1927, in Washington, USA. A root beer bar with nine seats was the first thing Marriott established in Washington, DC. The United States had a severe downturn from 1929 through 1932. While businesses were laying off workers, Marriott surprised everyone by deciding to grow and launching the Hot Shoppes restaurant chain, which was equally successful.
Later, John Willard Marriott looked into more modern commercial opportunities. He operated a chain of 7 food and beverage establishments established in 1932, each with an entirely unique menu. He rapidly established a business that specialized in in-flight catering in 1937 after sensing the need for food and drinks among passengers flying on recently established airlines. In 1957, Marriott entered the hospitality industry in a momentous move.
The first motorized hotel in history opened in Arlington, Virginia, from 1957 to 1985, and was run by Bill Marriott, J. Willard Marriott's son. Over the following 25 years, Marnott developed into a diverse, international company, and Bill Marriott became its CEO, whose vision and leadership revolutionized the hospitality sector. JW Marriott Jr.
was chosen to lead Marriott as its CEO in 1972. Willard Marriott, Sr. passed away, and JW Marriott, Jr. was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1985.
Marriott doubled its international presence after acquiring Renaissance Hotel Group in 1997. The group's goal for 2012 and beyond is to use technology and creativity to influence how people travel in the future.
