Due to limited and complex nature in some part of the process as well some other external factors, portfolio management is quite challenging for organizations. Beside many portfolio management tools and techniques, academics and practitioners have studied and recommended complex models to facilitate the portfolio management. However, these theoretical frameworks are, somehow, not applied by securities companies in Vietnam. Therefore, this dissertation is intended to better understand the academic and practical literature of portfolio management; study current practices of portfolio management activity in Viet Dragon Securities Company; and propose a framework that is beneficially adaptable to Viet Dragon Securities.
A case study strategy accessing qualitative data through observations, interviews and sources of reports is designed to investigate how Viet Dragon Securities manage their individual investor’s portfolio under the current contexts of recession in Vietnam to ensure successful realization of their growth and development strategy. The recommendations resulted from literature review and investigations do not only support the investigated corporation to improve the efficiency of their portfolio management but also facilitate possible adaptation to portfolio management by other securities companies. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS DECLARATION. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS.

The securities market has become more and more developed so as to enhance institutional and individual investors’ efficient use of capital. Along with the expansion in the size of the securities market, these financial intermediaries like stock companies has also experienced a remarkably development, which can be apparently assessed through the method and quality of services offered to customers.
In reality, securities market is an attractive investing channel; however, containing many potential risks, particularly toward the individual investors. Therefore, portfolio management was designed to reduce risks from securities market and protect them. The activities of portfolio management are very popular in almost securities markets all over the world. This is an integral activity of funds and stock companies.
Nevertheless, in Vietnam stock market, the activity of portfolio management has not attracted a due care from Government and governance institutions and the investors are still not aware fully of the benefits from this activity. In addition, when collecting the supporting materials for the thesis, I found out that Vietnam securities companies had to confront many difficulties in developing this activity. Therefore, I chose the issue: “Enhancing the efficiency of portfolio management for individual investors in Viet Dragon Securities Company” as the main topic of my graduation thesis.2 Aims of the study The purpose of this graduation thesis is to explore the portfolio management activity and the application of this activity in practice through a case study of Viet Dragon Securities Company. Firstly, the thesis shows research about basis theoretical contents about managing the investment portfolio and the portfolio management services.
Together with that, it also aims at finding out the reality of portfolio management section in Viet Dragon Securities Company in 1 Nguyen Thuy Linh ATCB K12 Graduation thesis 2013 order to raise feasible solutions and recommendations to enhance the quality of this section in these companies and also in the securities market in general.3 Research questions: This thesis aspires to provide answers to two questions of concerns to practitioners, portfolio managers or those who are interested in studying this investment activity in academia: What are the major challenges of portfolio management that Viet Dragon Securities Company has to confront now? What are the feasible solutions to better the efficiency of this activity in the Viet Dragon Securities company in particular and also might be employed in the security market in general? 1.4 Research methodology: Based on the reasoning discussed above, I believed it was pertinent to take a qualitative approach along with an exploratory research design to inductively address our research question. A case study strategy accessing qualitative data through observations and interviews best served this research approach. Besides, information and data are also collected from wide range of sources such as meeting notes and documented reports of existing contracts and database of reliable market data providers in order to triangle the evidences and discussions, and increase validity and reliability of information, data and findings. Collected information and data have been categorized in accordance with discussions within the areas of knowledge.
Upon analysis and discussion, I try to figure out the weakness of the current process and try to make recommendations and propose a framework that is beneficially applicable to the case study and will be usefully adaptable to other securities corporations in Vietnam.5 Thesis organization: The thesis consists of four main chapters: (1) Introduction, (2) Literature review, (3) Portfolio management for individual investors at Viet Dragon Securities Company and (4) Solutions and recommendations to enhance the efficiency of 2 Nguyen Thuy Linh ATCB K12 Graduation thesis 2013 portfolio management for individual investors in Viet Dragon Securities Company.
