Definition Critical thinking means making reasoned judgement 1. According to Beyer (1995): • Using criteria to judge the quality of something, from a simple activity such as normal daily activities to the conclusion of a research paper. • Critical Thinking is a disciplined manner of thought that a person uses to evaluate the validity of something (statement, new ideas & research). According to Scriven & Paul (1996) & Angelo (1995): • Critical thinking as the intellectually disciplined process of actively & skilfully conceptualising, applying, analysing, synthesising & evaluating information gathered from or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning or communication.
• “Critical thinking directly influences the capacity for individuals to advance in effectively applying the information to which they have been exposed” II. According to Ennis (1986), Henri (1991) & Garrison (1992) they developed their theories of critical thinking as a problem solving. The theories involved four stages: • Focusing & observing on a question or problem • Asking & answering questions for clarification of the problem • Making & evaluating decisions / solutions • Deciding on an action II. The critical thinking dispositions suggested by Ennis include: • Seeking a clear statement of the question • Seeking reasons • Trying to be well-informed • Trying to remain relevant to the main point TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC THỦY LỢI Trung tâm Đào tạo Quốc tế - Bộ môn Tiếng Anh Môn học: KỸ NĂNG HỌC ĐẠI HỌC Tên giảng viên: Nguyễn Phượng Linh Email: linhnp@tlu.vn ĐT: 0369894101 Skillset II: Critical Thinking Part 2: Introduction to Critical thinking (cont.)
