Total vs Restricted Translation In terms of levels, translation is divided into two types by J. Catford: total translation and restricted translation. Total translation is defined as replacement of SL grammar and lexis by equivalent TL grammar and lexis with consequential replacement of SL phonology/graphology by (non-equivalent) TL phonology/graphology.
