I. Tổng Quan Về Phân Tích Đối Chiếu Ẩn Dụ Về Quyền Lực

Phân tích đối chiếu ẩn dụ về quyền lực trong thành ngữ Anh-Việt từ góc độ ngôn ngữ học tri nhận là một lĩnh vực nghiên cứu quan trọng. Nghiên cứu này không chỉ giúp hiểu rõ hơn về cách mà các nền văn hóa khác nhau thể hiện khái niệm quyền lực mà còn làm nổi bật vai trò của ngôn ngữ trong việc hình thành nhận thức. Ẩn dụ là một công cụ mạnh mẽ trong ngôn ngữ, giúp chuyển tải những khái niệm trừu tượng thành những hình ảnh cụ thể hơn. Việc phân tích các thành ngữ trong hai ngôn ngữ này sẽ giúp làm rõ những điểm tương đồng và khác biệt trong cách mà người nói Anh và người nói Việt hiểu và diễn đạt quyền lực.

1.1. Khái Niệm Ẩn Dụ Trong Ngôn Ngữ Học Tri Nhận

Ẩn dụ được định nghĩa là một phương pháp diễn đạt mà trong đó một khái niệm được hiểu thông qua một khái niệm khác. Theo Lackoff và Johnson, ẩn dụ không chỉ là một biện pháp tu từ mà còn là cách mà con người tổ chức và hiểu thế giới xung quanh. Nghiên cứu này sẽ xem xét các loại ẩn dụ khác nhau liên quan đến quyền lực trong thành ngữ Anh và Việt.

1.2. Tầm Quan Trọng Của Thành Ngữ Trong Giao Tiếp

Thành ngữ đóng vai trò quan trọng trong giao tiếp hàng ngày. Chúng không chỉ mang ý nghĩa văn hóa mà còn phản ánh cách mà người nói cảm nhận và diễn đạt quyền lực. Việc hiểu rõ các thành ngữ này sẽ giúp người học ngôn ngữ nắm bắt được những sắc thái văn hóa và ngữ nghĩa sâu sắc hơn.

II. Vấn Đề Trong Phân Tích Ẩn Dụ Về Quyền Lực

Mặc dù có nhiều nghiên cứu về ẩn dụ và thành ngữ, nhưng việc phân tích ẩn dụ về quyền lực trong thành ngữ Anh-Việt vẫn còn nhiều thách thức. Một trong những vấn đề chính là sự khác biệt trong cách mà hai nền văn hóa này hiểu và diễn đạt quyền lực. Điều này có thể dẫn đến những hiểu lầm trong giao tiếp và dịch thuật.

2.1. Khó Khăn Trong Việc Dịch Thành Ngữ

Dịch thành ngữ giữa hai ngôn ngữ khác nhau thường gặp khó khăn do sự khác biệt về văn hóa và ngữ nghĩa. Nhiều thành ngữ không thể dịch trực tiếp mà cần phải hiểu ngữ cảnh và ý nghĩa sâu xa của chúng.

2.2. Sự Khác Biệt Trong Cách Diễn Đạt Quyền Lực

Người nói tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt có những cách diễn đạt quyền lực khác nhau. Ví dụ, trong tiếng Anh, quyền lực có thể được thể hiện qua hình ảnh của một trò chơi, trong khi trong tiếng Việt, quyền lực có thể được liên kết với hình ảnh của một kẻ trộm. Những khác biệt này cần được phân tích kỹ lưỡng để hiểu rõ hơn về cách mà mỗi nền văn hóa nhìn nhận quyền lực.

III. Phương Pháp Phân Tích Ẩn Dụ Về Quyền Lực

Nghiên cứu này sử dụng phương pháp phân tích đối chiếu để so sánh các ẩn dụ về quyền lực trong thành ngữ Anh và Việt. Phương pháp này cho phép xác định các điểm tương đồng và khác biệt trong cách mà hai ngôn ngữ này diễn đạt khái niệm quyền lực.

3.1. Phân Tích Định Tính Và Định Lượng

Nghiên cứu sẽ áp dụng cả phương pháp định tính và định lượng để phân tích dữ liệu. Phương pháp định lượng sẽ giúp xác định tần suất xuất hiện của các loại ẩn dụ, trong khi phương pháp định tính sẽ giúp hiểu sâu hơn về ngữ nghĩa và ngữ cảnh của chúng.

3.2. Phân Tích Các Loại Ẩn Dụ

Nghiên cứu sẽ phân loại các ẩn dụ về quyền lực thành các nhóm khác nhau như ẩn dụ cấu trúc, ẩn dụ ontological và ẩn dụ định hướng. Mỗi loại ẩn dụ sẽ được phân tích để làm rõ cách mà chúng phản ánh quyền lực trong ngôn ngữ.

IV. Kết Quả Nghiên Cứu Về Ẩn Dụ Quyền Lực

Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy có nhiều điểm tương đồng và khác biệt trong cách mà quyền lực được diễn đạt qua các thành ngữ trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt. Một số ẩn dụ như 'quyền lực là lên cao' được tìm thấy trong cả hai ngôn ngữ, trong khi một số khác chỉ xuất hiện trong một ngôn ngữ nhất định.

4.1. Tương Đồng Trong Cách Diễn Đạt Quyền Lực

Cả hai ngôn ngữ đều sử dụng hình ảnh 'lên cao' để thể hiện quyền lực, cho thấy một sự tương đồng trong cách mà người nói hiểu và diễn đạt khái niệm này. Điều này cho thấy rằng có những giá trị văn hóa chung giữa hai nền văn hóa.

4.2. Khác Biệt Trong Các Ẩn Dụ Đặc Trưng

Một số ẩn dụ chỉ xuất hiện trong một ngôn ngữ, ví dụ như 'quyền lực là kẻ trộm' trong tiếng Việt, cho thấy sự khác biệt trong cách mà mỗi nền văn hóa nhìn nhận và diễn đạt quyền lực. Những khác biệt này cần được xem xét trong bối cảnh văn hóa và xã hội của mỗi ngôn ngữ.

V. Kết Luận Và Hướng Tương Lai Của Nghiên Cứu

Nghiên cứu này đã chỉ ra rằng ẩn dụ về quyền lực trong thành ngữ Anh-Việt không chỉ phản ánh cách mà mỗi nền văn hóa hiểu về quyền lực mà còn mở ra hướng nghiên cứu mới trong lĩnh vực ngôn ngữ học tri nhận. Việc hiểu rõ hơn về các ẩn dụ này có thể giúp cải thiện việc dạy và học ngôn ngữ cũng như dịch thuật.

5.1. Ý Nghĩa Của Nghiên Cứu Đối Với Ngôn Ngữ Học

Nghiên cứu này đóng góp vào lĩnh vực ngôn ngữ học tri nhận bằng cách làm rõ vai trò của ẩn dụ trong việc hình thành nhận thức về quyền lực. Điều này có thể giúp các nhà nghiên cứu và giáo viên hiểu rõ hơn về cách mà ngôn ngữ ảnh hưởng đến tư duy.

5.2. Đề Xuất Hướng Nghiên Cứu Tương Lai

Các nghiên cứu trong tương lai có thể mở rộng ra các khía cạnh khác của ẩn dụ trong ngôn ngữ, chẳng hạn như ẩn dụ về tình yêu, chiến tranh hay các khái niệm trừu tượng khác. Điều này sẽ giúp làm phong phú thêm hiểu biết về ngôn ngữ và văn hóa.

Besides the similarity in expressing some metaphors like “power is up and no power is down”, for example, the two languages also had some distinctive features when metaphors “power is a container” and “power is a game” were only found in English and “power is a thief” were only found in Vietnamese. Rationale of the study In recent years, cognitive linguistics has flourished in Vietnam with increasing studies. One of the most important concepts of cognitive linguistics which emphasizes meaning construction (conceptualization) is metaphor.

Metaphor is known as one of the most useful methods in meaning transfer that is used widely not only in daily life but also in literature. It helps people understand an abstract concept by referring to a concrete one. For example, we often metaphorically conceptualize such abstract concepts as love, argument in “Love is journey” or “Argument is war”, which are clearly analyzed by famous cognitive linguists like Lackoff and Johnson (1980). It appears so often and is utilized so widely that sometimes we use it subconsciously without realizing it.

Nobody can deny idioms‟ importance in communication, learning, teaching and translation as well but it is a difficult area of English. According to Cooper (1999), idioms present a special language problem to all language learners because their figurative meanings are unpredictable. Also, their meanings are not the total sum of their parts and metaphor is considered one of the key factors to understand the meaning of idioms. When talking about idioms, we not only talk about the vocabulary and semantics of a language but also the cultures hidden behind.

Therefore, this study also makes some initial investigation to see how cultures affect idioms in Vietnamese and English in the way they convey the concept of power. Objectives of the study and research questions This study aims to investigate idioms that carry conceptual metaphor about power based on the theory of Lakoff and Johnson. To go further, this study is done to explore the similarities and the differences between the use of metaphor about power in English and Vietnamese idioms that reflect the culture of each language community. In other words, the study seeks answers to two research questions: Research question 1: How is the concept of power metaphorically expressed in English and Vietnamese idioms? Research question 2: What are the similarities and differences in expressions of conceptual metaphors about power in English and Vietnam idioms? 3. Scope of the study In this study, the analysis is based on the theory and classification of conceptual metaphors given by Lakoff and Johnson. Due to the limited time and ability, this research only investigated and contrasted conceptual metaphors about power in society and politics in English and Vietnamese idioms. Six dictionaries in both languages, three in English and three in Vietnamese were chosen.

The selected idioms in English are cited from several dictionaries including: - Oxford Idioms Dictionary for Learners of English by Oxford University Press (2006) - Dictionary of American Idioms by Spears, R. Methods and procedures of the study This study is based on conceptual metaphors framework introduced by Lackoff and Johnson (1980) in their invaluable book “Metaphor We Live By”. According to this model, conceptual metaphors are classified into three different kinds, namely structural metaphors, ontological metaphors and orientational metaphors. Firstly, contrastive and comparative analyses were carried out in order to identify the similarities and differences in expression of conceptual metaphor about 2 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add [e-mail] power in English and Vietnamese idioms.

Secondly, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze the data. Quantitatively, the data were analyzed in terms of the frequencies of structural, ontological and orientational metaphors. Qualitatively, the data were classified or examined based on such criteria as: Power is the human body; Power is a container; Power is up, and no power is down. Significance of the study 5.

Theoretical significance This study hopes to provide useful contributions to studies of cognitive linguistics, especially the role of conceptual metaphor in expressing the concept of power in idioms. Practical significance This research is expected to help learners of English in Vietnam understand the differences between English and Vietnamese cultures through idioms. Moreover, it can contribute to improvement of reading comprehension, translation and the analysis of literary works. Organization of the thesis Part A: Introduction.

This part presents the rationale, the aims, and the methodology of the study. The scope, the significance of the study and the organization of the thesis are also described. This part consists of three chapters: Chapter 1: Literature Review and Theoretical Background. This chapter provides fundamental knowledge of cognitive linguistics in general and conceptual metaphors in particular.

Some related concepts are also discussed, such as power and idioms. This chapter ends with related studies. Chapter 2: Research Methodology and Procedures. This chapter presents the methods and the procedures of the research including how the data were collected, described and analyzed.

Chapter 3: Findings and Discussions. This part summarizes the results of the studies and implications for learning, teaching and translating idioms. 4 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add [e-mail] PART B: DEVELOPMENT CHAPTER 1: LITERATURE REVIEW AND THEORETICAL BACKGROUND This chapter will provide a critical analysis of the previous studies about metaphors, idioms as well as power. Key concepts such as cognitive linguistics, conceptual metaphors, power and idioms are reviewed with the aim of establishing a theoretical background for the comparative and contrastive analysis of conceptual metaphor about power in English and Vietnamese idioms. Literature review Beginning from the last half of the twentieth century, Cognitive Linguistics has actually become an interesting research trend in order to investigate the relationship among language, mind and socio-physical experience of human beings. So many viewpoints about conceptual metaphor are presented clearly in the famous book by Lackoff and Johnson in 1980.

Thanks to the guide of Lackoff and Johnson‟s theory about conceptual metaphor, even the most abstract and tangible concept is also metaphorically understood by more concrete one through mapping domains. It actually encourages me to investigate the conceptual metaphor about power, one abstract and tangible concept. In Vietnam, so many linguists have contributed to the development of cognitive linguistics through their famous studies, namely Lý Toàn Thắng (2005), Trần Văn Cơ (2007), Nguyễn Đức Tồn (2007).
