52 ABSTRACT The topic "Survey on Factors Influencing University Students' Decisions in Choosing Reading Materials" seeks to investigate the numerous elements that influence university students’ decision- making when selecting reading materials. This study looks at the psychological, sociological, and environmental aspects that determine students’ decisions in this setting, with a particular emphasis on the Vietnamese student population. Exploring the elements that lead to hesitation, ambiguity, and contemplation while selecting reading materials may help us better understand the decision-making process. To meet the research aims, data will be collected using questionnaires distributed to Vietnamese university students.
The survey will collect data on the students’ age, educational background, and other pertinent demographics. The obtained data will be examined statistically to discover the most important elements influencing students' reading material selection judgments. The study's goal is to identify the influence of the following factors: subjective norms, price, material features, habit and experience, usefulness, and organizational environment. Furthermore, the study will look at the positive and negative consequences of these variables on students’ decision-making processes.
The study's findings will add to the current body of information on the subject and give insights into the elements that influence university students’ decisions to pick reading materials. The study's results will have significance for educational institutions, legislators, and career counselors, who may use them to design successful tactics and support systems to help students make educated reading choices. Furthermore, this study will provide the groundwork for future research, perhaps leading to the construction of a comprehensive model to guide students’ decision-making processes. Books are known in two popular forms: printed materials and e-materials.
While printed materials have appeared popularly in people's lives for centuries, with the rapid development of technology, e- materials are also gradually replacing them in the present. People no longer go to bookstores to choose the necessary materials but stay at home and buy PDFs off on websites. Obviously, this brings convenience and saves us more time. But there are still people who choose to read printed materials for their own reasons and interests.
Therefore, the goal of this research is to find out the trend of young people, especially UEH university students, whether they will choose to read printed materials or e-materials and what are the elements leading to their behavior in recent and in the future. Objectives of the study: Currently, reading books partly affects students’ learning. Researching this topic helps evaluate the impact of subjective and objective factors on students’ use of printed materials or e-materials, and investigate their purpose of using. In addition, this study also determined the extent to which print materials and e-materials affect the environment.
It is also a Survey to find out the reading and information searching trends of young people today on paper books or other social platforms, thereby helping students to find the most suitable learning methods for themselves and the lecturers find the most complete and effective teaching method. Theoretical aspects This research identifies and provides factors influencing the decision of using printed materials or e- materials among students. At the same time, it predicts which type of materials will become more prevalent in the future, considering the increasing environmental damage issue and the growing need to simplify human activities. Practical aspects This information will support printing and publishing units as well as book providers in gaining an overview of the demands of the student, which will devise directions and measures to cope with future challenges.
The study also proposes solutions on how to utilize these types of books in learning, research, as well as performing economic development. Previous research In the industrial era, the use of information technologies for information resource generation, dissemination, and retrieval is critical. Electronic services encompass a range of resources made possible by advancing information technology, such as bibliographical text databases, e-journals, e- books, open-access materials, and blogs. Furthermore, readers can now conveniently access a plethora of written documents through electronic means.
Thus, students regard e-books as a welcome change in their ability to obtain information. Subsequently, discussions have arisen over the prevailing practice of utilizing electronic books and physical printed materials. We conduct extensive research initiatives with a strong emphasis on depth. The University of Liverpool( 2010): conducted a study that revealed that a significant majority of users considered eBooks to be beneficial.
The primary reasons for preferring eBooks are their convenience and ability to obtain information quickly. These factors make eBooks a popular choice for conducting research, but paper books remain the preferred option for reading a book from start to finish. In general, there is widespread agreement that eBooks will enhance, but not entirely supplant, printed books in the foreseeable future. The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project ( 2012): conducts a series of surveys that examine the public's reading habits, including their consumption of print books, e-books, and audiobooks.
The surveys also explore their attitudes towards the evolving methods of book accessibility. The majority of the discoveries in this research indicate the increasing prevalence of e- books and the widespread use of dedicated e-book reading devices. Sultan Qaboos University in Oman( 2021): conducted research among students from all nine colleges, revealing a preference for reading resource material in electronic format. Furthermore, they spent more time reading from e-books compared to printed materials.
While most students find e-materials to be more convenient in terms of portability, the majority still prefer printed copies of study material for the convenience of note-making and exam preparation. The National Association of College Stores (NACS) (2010, 2011): found that students have shown a preference for using physical textbooks rather than electronic textbooks for their classes. This data demonstrates that readers continue to favor physical copies of books due to their inherent benefits. The research organization Voxburner( 2013): conducted a poll in the United Kingdom and discovered that despite the prevalence of digital gadgets, young individuals still have a preference for paper books.
62 percent of individuals between the ages of 16 and 24 prioritize e-books. Among the most frequently mentioned reasons are: a desire to avoid being limited to a specific gadget; cost- effectiveness; and a sentimental attachment to physical books. The University of San Francisco( 2015): came into existence. Overall, students generally have a preference for physical textbooks over electronic textbooks.
The main factor influencing their selection was the students’ inherent inclination towards print materials over digital ones. Additionally, they perceived printed textbooks as being more practical and user-friendly compared to electronic textbooks. The individuals who favored electronic textbooks did so because they appreciated the convenience of having all the necessary course materials readily accessible in one location. Based on our previous research, our team has determined that this topic is relevant and significant in improving resource allocation and enhancing students’ learning experiences in Ho Chi Minh City.1 E-materials Developments in computer technology have changed the nature of digital content and its accessibility to consumers.
Furthermore, the internet has caused an evolution with the emergence of electronic materials (e-materials). "E-material" typically refers to digital or electronic material, such as documents, books, articles, presentations, and multimedia content, that is available in electronic format rather than in physical form. E-material can be accessed and distributed through various electronic devices, such as computers, tablets, e-readers, and smartphones. It's commonly used in educational settings, online publishing, digital libraries, and e-commerce platforms.
eGyanKyosh explained that electronic materials are broadly classified into three categories: audio, visual, and audiovisual materials.2 Printed materials The history of printed materials dates back thousands of years, evolving from various forms of communication and documentation methods into the sophisticated printing processes we use today. Printed materials refer to any physical documents or objects that are produced through printing processes. This can include a wide range of items such as books, newspapers, magazines, brochures, flyers, posters, business cards, and more. Printed materials have been a fundamental means of communication and dissemination of information for centuries, offering a tangible and durable medium for conveying ideas, stories, advertisements, and various forms of content.
In the mid-15th century, Gutenberg developed a movable-type printing press to print different texts. This innovation laid the foundation for mass production of books and other printed materials. Gutenberg's printing press ignited a revolution in the dissemination of knowledge and information. It facilitated the spread of ideas, scientific discoveries, and religious texts.
Throughout history, printed materials have played a crucial role in shaping societies, disseminating knowledge, and preserving cultural heritage.3 Habit and Experience In The psychology of habit (Verplanken, B.
