I. Tổng Quan Hàm Ý Hội Thoại trong Extra English Luận Văn

Luận văn Thạc sĩ về Hàm ý hội thoại trong series Extra English khám phá cách các nhân vật giao tiếp vượt ra ngoài nghĩa đen của ngôn từ. Nghiên cứu này, thuộc lĩnh vực Ngôn ngữ học, đi sâu vào phân tích hội thoại và Pragmatics để làm sáng tỏ những hàm ý ẩn chứa trong lời nói của bốn nhân vật chính. Việc hiểu rõ hàm ngôn và cách nó được sử dụng trong ngữ cảnh cụ thể là chìa khóa để giải mã ý nghĩa thực sự của diễn ngôn.

Loạt phim Extra English được chọn làm đối tượng nghiên cứu vì tính gần gũi với người học tiếng Anh, bối cảnh London chân thực và khả năng tạo ra tiếng cười thông qua các tình huống giao tiếp hài hước. Nghiên cứu này kỳ vọng sẽ đóng góp vào việc hiểu ngôn ngữ một cách sâu sắc hơn, đặc biệt trong bối cảnh English as a Foreign Language (EFL) và Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Bằng cách phân tích cách các nhân vật hiểu ngôn ngữ và truyền tải thông điệp, luận văn này cung cấp cái nhìn sâu sắc về giao tiếp hiệu quả và tránh những hiểu lầm tiềm ẩn.

Nghiên cứu sử dụng cả phương pháp phân tích định tính và phân tích định lượng. Dữ liệu được thu thập từ các đoạn hội thoại trong phim, sau đó được phân loại và phân tích dựa trên lý thuyết về hàm ý hội thoại của Grice. Luận văn này không chỉ đơn thuần mô tả cách các nhân vật sử dụng hàm ý hội thoại mà còn đi sâu vào phân tích các chiến lược và mục đích mà họ sử dụng để tạo ra những hàm ý đó. Kết quả nghiên cứu có ý nghĩa quan trọng trong việc nâng cao hiểu ngôn ngữ, đặc biệt đối với người học tiếng Anh.

1.1. Tầm Quan Trọng của Hàm Ý Hội Thoại trong Giao Tiếp

Trong giao tiếp, không phải lúc nào chúng ta cũng nói mọi thứ một cách trực tiếp. Hàm ý hội thoại cho phép chúng ta truyền tải thông điệp một cách tinh tế, khéo léo hoặc thậm chí hài hước. Việc hiểu rõ hàm ý hội thoại là rất quan trọng để tránh những hiểu lầm và xây dựng mối quan hệ tốt đẹp hơn. Các nhân vật trong Extra English thường xuyên sử dụng hàm ý hội thoại để tạo ra những tình huống dở khóc dở cười, đồng thời thể hiện cá tính và mối quan hệ của họ. Luận văn này sẽ phân tích chi tiết cách họ sử dụng hàm ý hội thoại trong các tình huống khác nhau.

1.2. Giới Thiệu Về Series Extra English và Đối Tượng Nghiên Cứu

Extra English là một series phim sitcom được thiết kế đặc biệt để dạy tiếng Anh. Với bối cảnh London hiện đại và dàn nhân vật hài hước, Extra English đã trở thành một công cụ học tiếng Anh hiệu quả và thú vị cho nhiều người. Luận văn này tập trung vào bốn nhân vật chính: Bridget, Annie, Nick và Hector. Mỗi nhân vật có một tính cách và phong cách giao tiếp riêng, và họ thường xuyên sử dụng hàm ý hội thoại để thể hiện bản thân và tương tác với những người xung quanh.

II. Thách Thức Hiểu Hàm Ý Hội Thoại Góc Nhìn Ngôn Ngữ Học

Một trong những thách thức lớn nhất trong việc hiểu ngôn ngữ là giải mã những ý nghĩa tiềm ẩn đằng sau lời nói. Hàm ý hội thoại, theo định nghĩa của Grice, là những thông điệp được truyền tải một cách gián tiếp, thông qua sự suy luận của người nghe dựa trên ngữ cảnh và kiến thức nền tảng. Việc nắm bắt hàm ý hội thoại đòi hỏi người nghe phải có khả năng phân tích diễn ngôn và hiểu rõ các quy tắc Pragmatics.

Trong Extra English, các nhân vật thường xuyên sử dụng các chiến lược như flouting maxims (vi phạm các nguyên tắc hội thoại) để tạo ra hàm ý hội thoại. Ví dụ, họ có thể nói những điều không đúng sự thật (vi phạm maxim of quality), cung cấp thông tin thừa hoặc thiếu (vi phạm maxim of quantity), hoặc nói những điều không liên quan (vi phạm maxim of relation). Việc giải mã những vi phạm này đòi hỏi người nghe phải có khả năng suy luận và hiểu rõ ý định của người nói.

Việc phân tích hội thoại và giải mã hàm ý hội thoại không phải là một nhiệm vụ dễ dàng. Nó đòi hỏi người phân tích phải xem xét nhiều yếu tố, bao gồm ngữ cảnh, kiến thức nền tảng của người nói và người nghe, và các quy tắc Pragmatics. Ngoài ra, các nhân vật trong Extra English thường xuyên sử dụng các chiến lược phức tạp để tạo ra hàm ý hội thoại, điều này càng làm tăng thêm độ khó cho quá trình phân tích diễn ngôn.

2.2. Ảnh Hưởng của Văn Hóa Anh Mỹ Đến Hàm Ý Hội Thoại

Ngôn ngữ không chỉ là một công cụ giao tiếp mà còn là một phần của văn hóa. Sự khác biệt văn hóa có thể ảnh hưởng đáng kể đến cách chúng ta sử dụng và hiểu hàm ý hội thoại. III. Cách Nhân Vật Extra English Vi Phạm Maxims Luận Văn Thạc Sĩ

Luận văn Thạc sĩ này tập trung làm rõ cách các nhân vật trong Extra English sử dụng Hàm ý hội thoại. Cụ thể, luận văn phân tích các flouting maxims theo lý thuyết của Grice, nhằm làm sáng tỏ các chiến lược mà nhân vật sử dụng. Moreover, the study is undertaken as an attempt to discover the similarities and differences in their habits of flouting maxims.

The research employed both quantitative and qualitative method. The data were in the form of utterances. The source of data was Extra English series. The researcher employed some steps to collect the data: watching the episodes and transcribing the equivalent data to pinpoint the frequency, the strategies and functions used.

There are three results in this study. The first result is that all the types of maxim are flouted by four main characters and maxim of relation is flouted the most often. The second result is that there are seven strategies and fourteen reasons used to flout the maxims. The last result draws comparison of the way different characters flouting the maxims.

INTRODUCTION This initial chapter presents the problem and the rationale, the aims, the scope and the significance of the thesis. Most importantly, the research questions are identified to work as a guideline for the whole research. Statement of the problem and rationale for the study. Learning a language is much more complicated than understanding the words themselves, when the meanings put in different contexts may create different results.

Therefore, it is essential for language learners to thoroughly understand utterances under certain circumstances. Among various fields of studying discourse analysis, conversational implicature is worth being taken into consideration since the hidden meanings it carries really can result in the misunderstanding of a conversation. Extra English series is selected for this research due to three main reasons. First, this is a language education television series designed for learning English purposes, which is quite familiar with those who learn English.

Second, with 30 hilarious, half-hour sitcom programmes conducted in an authentic London setting, the study is expected to represent the way native speakers use language in daily life. Last, we can see how laughter is created based on the hidden meanings under the words through funny situations of this sitcom. There are certain previous studies conducted about implicature with diverse types of objects; however, with this study, the researcher would like to put one more brick to the study of implicature in a different context. Furthermore, since it is observed that Vietnamese learners of English often fail in considering the context when speaking English to foreigners, which results in some improper replies, this study is expected to contribute to understanding language in pragmatics.

In this study, the researcher attempts to see how conversational implicature used in this series. Besides, with the purpose of digging a deeper analysis on implicature use, the researcher also hopes to present the similarities and differences among the way each main character using implicature. Aims of the study and research questions The objectives of the study are: 1.

to identify the types of maxims flouting and explain the strategies used to flout those maxims by the main characters in English Extra English series. to identify the differences and similarities in the purposes of each main character flouted the maxims. In order to gain the objectives, the research is conducted to answer the following research questions: 1. How are conversational implicature used by four main characters in Extra English series? 2.

What are the similarities and differences among the way these characters using conversational implicature? 1. Scope of the study As it was mentioned above, due to the limit of time, the study only focuses on conversational implicature, which is closer to pragmatics and the study of discourse analysis. Specifically, the analysis is about implicature created by flouting 4 Grice‟s maxims (they will be discussed later). The data chosen is the Extra English series which contains 30 episodes.

Significance of the study Since the researcher aims to provide a detailed and comprehensive analysis and evaluation of conversational implicature used in a language education television series- Extra English, theoretically this study is highly expected to enrich the researcher‟s and readers‟ knowledge in the pragmatics which is particularly related to cooperative principle and maxim flouting. Practically, the findings of this research are expected to contribute to the comprehension of other studies on conversational implicature in particular and pragmatics in general.

Besides, the researcher and other English teachers can understand more about English situation comedies with their art of exploiting conversational implicature. Therefore, this study hopes to be a reference for other English teachers to use situation comedies in teaching students about implicature.
