INTRODUCTION The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of the rationale for the study, its objective and the research questions as well as provide a summary of methodologies applied to gain the objectives of this study. In addition, an overview of the scope, limitation and organization of this dissertation are also included in this chapter.
Rationale Years of working with young learners at a primary school in Hai Phong has helped me to realize that speaking is a real challenge for them. They seem to be afraid of speaking English in class due to various reasons such as: shyness, reticence, fear of laughter when they say something wrong. Moreover, large class size results in teachers have inadequate time to scaffold all students in their speaking development. Hence, a relevant method of teaching speaking skills can help both teachers and students overcome these challenges.
In order to successfully conduct an English speaking lesson in class, the teachers' application of teaching methods plays a very important role. For students to effectively develop speaking skills, creating a joyful foreign language environment in the classroom is very important. Comedy short videos on YouTube could be a wise choice for this purpose. Nowadays, YouTube is a free online English learning channel with many interesting videos, containing up to 20 million videos’ contents, and animated movies promising to be a place to help children speak English more fluently.
Children can watch their favorite characters go on adventures, while still absorbing the language. Besides, one of the great things about having young learners watch videos on YouTube is that they can watch them over and over again. The more children watch, the more they will understand, and eventually use the language themselves, even remembering important vocabulary and idioms for their speaking. YouTube short comedy videos, which are highly motivating can help teachers create contexts in which the language use is meaningful.
All the above-mentioned reasons have inspired me to conduct a research project entitled: Using Comedy Short Videos On YouTube To Improve Students’ English Speaking Skills: An Action Research Project AtA Primary School In Hai Phong. Research aims and objectives The study aims to determine whether suitable English YouTube short comedy videos could enhance young learners speaking skills with a view to disseminating the implementation in wider teaching and learning contexts. Specifically, the study sets up the following three objectives: 1. Determining the extent to which the use of YouTube comedy short videos is effective in improving the students’ speaking skills.
Exploring the difficulties encountered by the teacher in using YouTube comedy short videos to improve the students’ speaking skills. Investigating the students’ opinions of the use of YouTube to improve their speaking skills. Research questions The study aims to seek answers to the following questions: Question 1: To what extent is the use of YouTube comedy short videos effective in improving the students’ speaking skills? Question 2: What difficulties are encountered by the teacher in using YouTube comedy short videos to improve the students’ speaking skills? Question 3: What are the students’ opinions of the use of YouTube comedy short videos to improve their speaking skills? The study sets out three research questions to serve some following purposes. Firstly, since this is an action research, Question | is set out to evaluate how effective the use of YouTube comedy short videos in improving the students’ speaking skills is.
Secondly, as for Question 2, the study will help other teachers anticipate difficulties that they will encounter if they also utilize YouTube comedy short videos in teaching speaking skills. Finally, basing on students’ opinions in Question 3 , the teacher will adjust and improve the teaching method which is more suitable for the students. Scope of the study The study focuses on using YouTube comedy short videos in teaching speaking to the 40 grade-4 students at a primary school in Hai Phong in a period of three months from August 1, 2023 to November 1, 2023. Researcher specifically focus on the short cartoon videos that are excellent for supporting the teaching of speaking skills.
The videos offer familiar topics such as places, daily routines or animals. The showing time lasts from 3 to 5 minutes. Besides, the study also investigated specific speaking skills to evaluate students at Al level (Al CEFR).
