38 vi ABSTRACT The improvement in financial innovations and technologies has made E- Banking services an indispensable part of the global banking system and especially the national commercial banks. For Agribank HQV branch promoting these services has been also a crucial strategy for its sustainable development. The main purposes of this study are to highlight the benefits of E-Banking services and to identify its impacts on the business performance. It also aims to discuss the current background, main challenges over the period 2017- 2019 and to provide suggested solutions for E-Banking services at Agribank Hoang Quoc Viet branch.
Both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied for data analysis. Main tool is the interviews with 3 vice directors and officials of Marketing and Banking Services Division of the branch. The results show that E-Banking services have a positive impact on the business performance of Agribank HQV branch mainly enhancing banking services sales, improving the profitability and strengthening the relationship with the customers. Besides, several challenges have been identified, including shortage of human resources, inappropriate equipment, reliance on the third party and fierce competitiveness in banking sector.
To overcome these obstacles for better performance of E-Banking services at Agribank HQV branch, it is important to improve the quality of the human resources, upgrading IT infrastructure and renewing marketing strategies. Research Background Recently, the banking industry has seen a profound transformation and great advances owing to the changes in financial innovations and technologies. This major improvement has made E-Banking services an intense part of the global financial environment.
Several research studies such as Srinivas & Wadhwani (2018), Schrmid (2020), Best (2020) have highlighted the key benefits of using online banking, which are offering transactions any time, any locations, improving the performances of banks and booting the national economy. In fact, most financial institutions have largely provided online services as a “must-have” type of service for both individual customers and enterprises. Besides, the cashless society has begun in developing countries even in the remote areas. E-Banking has truly assisted in projecting transparency in the banking sector.
Recent statistics show that many European countries have reached an over average online banking penetration in 2018. Specifically, the research results of Deloitte‟s global digital banking also show that roughly two- third of customers (73%) use online banking at least once a month. Following this trend, numerous Vietnamese commercial banks have recently recognized the value of keeping up with the upward momentums in E-Banking especially to deal with the impacts of the SARS-COV-2 pandemic. Additionally, many financial institutions including Agribank have considered enhancing E- Banking as one of the crucial strategies for sustainable development.
Take Agribank Hoang Quoc Viet branch (Agribank HQV branch) among them for example, this credit institution has been implementing different plans to promote these services such as modernizing the payment system and creating an advanced payment technology infrastructure system. However, this branch still has faced some challenges for improving the effectiveness of E-Banking, due to the difficult economic background and fierce competition in the banking system. As a result, the current study was conducted to dig deeper into E-Banking services at the Agribank Hoang Quoc Viet Branch. Significance of the Study Together with the commitment to reverse the SARS-COV-2 pandemic, the Vietnamese economy in general and the banking industry, in particular, aimed to suggest solutions so as to mitigate the negative effects of the disease.
E-Banking services were considered as an exit door to save the banking systems. In addition, these services have strongly developed over the world and received the concern by many researchers such as Siam (2006), Nuwagaba & Brighton (2014), Dinh et. However, studies on improving E-Banking services have not been significant in Vietnam. Besides, as the bank in the center of the epidemic situation, it was vital for Agribank HQV Branch to promote E-Banking services at that time.
Nevertheless, few studies have focused on this issue of Agribank HQV Branch. Therefore, this research paper highlighted the current background, challenges and the solutions for enhancing the E-Banking services of the branch. Research Purposes The main purposes of this paper are to discuss the roles, benefits of E- Banking services and to identify its impacts on business performance. Besides, the current background of E-Banking for the Agribank HQV Viet branch, the main challenges would be mentioned and analyzed thoroughly before providing solutions for improving the E-banking services of the branch.
Research Questions To achieve the purposes mentioned above, the following questions have been addressed in the current study: Question 1: What are the roles and benefits of E-Banking services? Question 2: What are the common factors affecting E-Banking services? Question 3: What is the current background of the E-Banking services of the Agribank Hoang Quoc Viet Branch? Question 4: What are the challenges for E-Banking services of the business performances of the Agribank Hoang Quoc Viet Branch? Question 5: What are the possible solutions for improving the E-Banking services of the Agribank Hoang Quoc Viet Branch? 2 1. Research Schedule The current study was conducted from February to June, 2020 under the supervisions of Ms Le Thi Minh Que (MA) Faculty of Foreign Languages – Banking Academy. Research Structure The organization of the current study includes five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction of the current paper along with the research background, significance, purposes, questions, schedule, and structure.
Chapter Two provides an overview of the roles and benefits of E-Banking services then the factors affecting the adoption of E-Banking for the commercial banks and the economy. After the literature review, Chapter Three presents the research approach, the data collection, and the data analysis. Chapter Four describes the current background and the challenges for the E-Banking service on the Agribank HQV Branch. In addition, the solutions for improving E-Banking are suggested in this chapter.
Finally, Chapter Five deals with the summary of the findings and draws the conclusions for the E- Banking services of the Agribank HQV Branch. In this chapter, after the research implications, the limitations of the current study and some recommendations for further studies are also indicated. Definitions of E-Banking Service The term E-Banking has been defined in the studies of Daniela et. E-Banking was a form of banking services and transactions performed via electronic means (Yablonsky, 2016). In detail, E-Banking provided services for financial institutions, individuals or businesses. Moreover, State Bank of Vietnam claimed that E- Banking was one of the banking services via electronic channels, which not only allowed customer information of the bank and its services but also allowed them to access accounts, make payments, apply for loans, transfer money (Thai Xuan Vinh, 2015).
Some of the electronic channels were the internet, the home page, Wireless Application Protocol, phones, ATM, etc.
