Dang Lê Quynh Chỉ — 11190793 — Business English 61C EXECUTIVE SUMMARY When translating, the translation process is crucial. A translator will utilize a strategy during the translation process that is appropriate for the task at hand.
It is Important to choose the method that will be employed during the translation process because it has a significant impact on the translation's outcome. The purpose of this study is to determine how well-aware National Economics University Business English students are of Newmark's translation techniques and to characterize how students apply them when translating economic news. Employing some techniques of qualitative method, the findings showed that the majority of students do not grasp the translation methods well. The reason for their lack of knowledgement largely due to personal interest and the shortage of in-class lesson.
As for analyzing the methods adopted by English learners, out of eight methods proposed by Newmark, there are three main translation methods used in translating economic news by Business English students, namely communicative translation, faithful translation and literal translation. In particular, communicative translation take the dominance in the overall result. The audience can immediately understand the target texts' skopos because they require little effort to read them, hence a communicative translation technique is adopted as the general plan. The findings demonstrate how communicative translation affects grammatical structure by making the target texts comprehensible, emphasizing the main message or removing extraneous material, and employing clarification of specific terms.
As a result, there is no room for ambiguity in the audience, and the strategy also results in instant comprehension and easier reading. il Dang Lé Quynh Chỉ — 11190793 — Business English 61C LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS BE Business English NEU National Economics University SL Source Language TL Target Language 11 Dang Lê Quynh Chỉ — 11190793 — Business English 61C LIST OF TABLES AND FIGURES Table 3. Background Most people believe that translation serves as a bridge between cultures.
Since translation creates a link between two societies with disparate cultures and languages, it aids in the exchange of ideas, concepts, and cultures. Additionally, translation plays a crucial role in helping students in mastering the language. Language translation can highlight the structural differences between languages as well as any shared features, including vocabulary or word order. Accordingly, translation has been listed as one of the effective ways to learn English as a second language.
Deep knowledge of both grammar and culture is necessary for translation. The rules of a language as well as the customs of its speakers must be known to translators. Translation demands people have an in-depth understanding of both the target and source language. Besides, writing skills are also another fundamental factor.
Therefore, learning translation is considered to be challenging to language learners in general, and Business English students in particular. Grasping clearly the translation methods can help students take the right way to translate between languages, reducing confusion and common errors in doing the translation. Peter Newmark took the initiative to turn translation into a field of study in and of itself. He made innovative and somewhat contentious contributions to translation theory, characterizing the process of translating a text from one language to another as both a science and an art.
He has stated eight translation methods, namely word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation. Each of them has specific features, appropriate to be used in translating different fields and text genres. This research is conducted to learn about the awareness and attitudes of students about translation methods introduced by Peter Newmark. Next, the reality of how the students employ these methods in translating economic news would also be studied.
Dang Lê Quynh Chỉ — 11190793 — Business English 61C 1. Rationale of the study Peter Newmark defines translation procedures as operations performed on the full document. Conversely, translation techniques are used for smaller units like phrases. In order to study and translate works of literature published in the original language and to advance students’ overall intellectual growth, language translation methods have two basic objectives.
Selecting the right approach speeds up the translation process and ensures that the information is well understood in the target culture. In translation courses, Business English college learners in NEU mainly focus on practicing converting directly texts from the source language into the target language. The techniques, methods, or procedures that should be used in the translation process are not strongly highlighted. This results in incompetent translation documents made by students, affecting the course outcome, or additionally academic expertise needed for the further career path of BE scholars.
The research aims to study the comprehension and usage of Peter Newmark’s translation methods and procedures by Business English learners at NEU, then assist them in understanding the importance of using the right methods in translating economic texts. What is the attitude of Business English students about Peter Newmark’s translation methods? 2. _ Which translation methods by Peter Newmark are used mostly by Business English students in translating economic news? 1. Scope of the study The study focuses on the understanding of BE students about Newmark’s translation methods and procedures.
The author would examine whether students have knowledge about the theory and the reality of applying his methods in converting English to Vietnamese. Dang Lê Quynh Chỉ — 11190793 — Business English 61C This research is also carried out to investigate the importance of applying the right methods in translating to have better results in learning translation among college learners. This study only focused on the translation from English to Vietnamese due to the limited time available for performing the research. Additionally, as the research participants' mother tongue is Vietnamese, it would be more beneficial for them to translate the language into their native dialect.
Moreover, as English is the source language for the study of translation methods proposed by Peter Newmark, it would be ideal for this research if the methods were examined using English as the original language. Primary data First, the opinions of students were asked with a list of questions to attain their awareness of Peter Newmark’s translation methods. There were 100 respondents, who are Business English students intake 61 at National Economics University, participated in the survey. The statistics collected were presented in the form of chart and analyzed to elicit the registered opinion, and then came to the conclusion about awareness of students about Newmark’s translation procedures.
The Saigon Times and The Economist are the news sources used for the translation survey. These two well-known websites provide daily updates on news about the economy both domestically and abroad. The English version of Bao Kinh te Sai Gon, Saigon Times, writes in a style that is familiar and clear to Vietnamese readers. The Economist, on the other hand, orginated in Britain and has a writing style that comes more naturally to native speakers.
From these two websites, 10 brief news items will be chosen, and 10 economic news sentences will be extracted for the translation job of the students. Descriptive statistics were used in this study's descriptive qualitative methodology. Utilizing descriptive statistics allows for percentage-based data analysis. The percentages are determined by categorizing the various translation techniques and strategies that were discovered.
Through percentages of each classification, the methods of the source texts and the target texts were established Dang Lê Quynh Chỉ — 11190793 — Business English 61C and examined during the data analysis. Every translation method discovered was examined to determine how it impacted the target texts. In addition, lexical- semantic analysis techniques, and some quantitative analysis procedures will be used in the right situations and at the right levels. Both a quantitative and a qualitative method were used to perform the study.
Results of the quantitative analysis serve as the foundation for the qualitative analysis, commentary, and evaluation. Finally, based on the research findings, recommendations and conclusions were made.
