Student’s learning trend ABSTRACT Online learning has a long history but is almost unfamiliar with education in Vietnam. Because of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the transition from face-to-face classes to online classes is more focused, especially for English subjects. The new way of learning leads to many challenges for both teachers and students, This study analyzes students’ perceptions of online English learning at a secondary school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and makes some recommendations to improve the quality of online English teaching and learning. The reseach results from 84 §th-grade students of Hong Bang School show that they have a positive attitude towards online English learning.
However, 70% of participants think that they will not continue to participate in online English classes in the future. Based on these results, the researcher makes 3 recommendations for improving the effectiveness of online English learning: (1) increasing the awareness of the whole society about the role of online English teaching and learning, (2) improving the quality of the Internet connection for online English learning, (3) improving information technology competence for teachers of English. Keywords: online learning, English learning, COVID-19 pandemic, perception CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1. Background of the study The concept of online learning or E-learning is a learning system based on formal teaching but with the help of electronic resources, learning through the use of information technology to access educational textbooks.
Online learning and traditional learning are completely different. The most noticeable difference is that learners and teachers do not meet directly and are not present at the same learning location (Rifiyanti, 2020) .In most cases, eLearning includes a course, program or degree offered entirely online. However, with the rapid advancement in technology and advancement in learning systems, online learning has now become widely accepted. With the development of the computer revolution, as we are drawn to smartphones, tablets, etc., these devices now have an important place in the online classroom to serve teaching and learning process.
Books are gradually being replaced by electronic educational materials such as optical discs or USBs, and online learning materials formats. Knowledge can also be shared via the Internet anywhere and anytime. There are many terms used to describe learning provided on an online platform, through the Internet, from distance education to digital learning, eLearning or online learning. Online learning includes courses delivered via the Internet to a location other than the classroom in which the teacher is teaching.
However, it sull provides interaction for learners, in which students can communicate with teachers or other students in the classroom. There are more and more improvements in online learning, you can even “electronically” raise your hand and interact in real time even if it is a recorded lecture. Learners and instructors can interact with each other, or interact with the online learning system, perform exercises, practice or take tests, or can also choose their own learning methods. as well as choosing tools tN to support the learning process to achieve the highest efficiency.
Online learning has been proven to be a successful method for training and education in the technological era and is becoming an inevitable trend. Smedely (2010) stated that online learning gives students and educational institutions a lot of freedom in terms of time and place to study, this flexibility makes the majority of students feel comfortable in the process of receiving information for learning purposes. On the contrary, Ghoshal (2020) considered that the online teaching and learning process can be negatively affected if learners and teachers do not have sufficient technological competence. In addition, he also said that poor Internet connection also creates difficulties for learners in accessing documents, In fact, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of online learning helps a lot in improving the quality of education, specifically for English in high schools.
Besides, listening to students’ suggestions is also a good way to understand what learners want during the process of learning English online. Furthermore, to learn English online successfully, learners must be proactive in online activities. Self- regulation can help them make decisions about certain aspects of their learning. They can determine the goal setting, planning, monitoring and evaluation phases of the learning process (Vonderwell, 2004).
This study aims to determine students’ perceptions of learning English online, and then consider suggestions from learners. With the theoretical basis of the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of online learning, this study offers recommendations to improve the effectiveness of online English learning at a secondary school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Statement of the problem The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus had its first infection case in Vietnam on January 23, 2020. The isolation, monitoring, and restriction of people from epidemic areas, border closures, deployment of the medical declaration have taken place.
Activities that gather large numbers of people, travel, and trade in localities are restricted. Some places take body temperature measurements, equip disinfectants, distribute free masks and tighten control. The economy and society in Vietnam have been significantly affected by this pandemic. As with all other sectors, education at all levels is also influenced.
According to UNESCO, as of April 8, 2020, around the world, nearly 1.6 billion students and students are affected; 188 countries were forced to close schools and educational institutions nationwide. On April 1, 2020, Vietnam began implementing social distancing on a national scale to prevent the spread of coronavirus and people are advised to stay at home. Social distancing is one of the measures to limit the spread of this pandemic, but it will cause a lot of damage as well as changes in the way many industries operate, especially the education sector (Rifiyanti, 2020). However, learning and teaching process can not be stopped.
Along with many other countries in the world, it is not easy for Vietnam to build a solid scenario for the education sector, because the COVID-19 pandemic situation is sull complicated. The coronavirus poses various challenges to Vietnam’s education and training system. Basilaia and Kvavadze (2020) found that many countries around the world have used online libraries, TV broadcasts, video lectures. as educational solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
