IV ABSTRACT In the twenty-first century, the globe has flattened, becoming more accessible, shareable, and familiar for all inhabitants due to the widespread usage of English as a common language instead of regional, cultural, and linguistic diversity. English has characteristics with hundreds of other languages, so this influential global language has characteristics with hundreds of other languages and has been adopted as an international language (Rao, 2019). Especially autonomy can play a crucial role in the success of English learning. To promote learner autonomy in Vietnam's higher education system, this study Was carried out to understand the perception of autonomy deeply.
Moreover, extensive reading activities were investigated as a way of fostering autonomy. Using a quantitative method design, there were (wo parts to the 42-item survey: learner autonomy and extensive reading activities. The first part examined if non-English majored students were autonomous. Based on three subsets: motivation, learning / using English in class, and learning / using English out ofclass, the findings proved that all these students were autonomous in learning English.
In the second part of the survey, the participants responded to the statements about extensive reading activities in terms of teachers’ roles and materials to find out their correlations with learner autonomy. Statical analyses showed that there were positive correlations between them. The results of this study can provide implications and further directions in the future. Keywords: learner autonomy, extensive reading activities, correlations.
