Therefore, the study was conducted to provide solutions to improve the efficiency of CASA mobilization at ACB.
Firstly, the thesis presented an overview of ACB's business activities in the period of 2019-2021, including profit, depositing and lending activities. Afterwards, ACB's CASA mobilization would be evaluated based on the amount of CASA mobilized and the growth rate of CASA over the three years. In addition, corresponding figures from other banks were also presented and comparisons would be made. Next, the advantages and disadvantages of CASA compared to other sources of fund were clarified.
In addition, the factors affecting the efficiency of CASA mobilization were determined, thereby partly showing the strengths and weaknesses of ACB in mobilizing CASA. Finally, practical solutions not only to ACB, but also to the State Bank of Vietnam were proposed to solve the remaining difficulties. Through the study, the limitations of ACB in mobilizing CASA were pointed out, including many errors encountered in ACB's digital banking application, not many utilities integrated on payment accounts, some high fees, complaints of the customers about staff’s service. However, many practical solutions were suggested to solve these limitations, which could help to improve the efficiency of ACB's CASA mobilization.
ix CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1. Introduction In the age of current technology, the economy has gradually been digitized. Health, education and public services fields have also gradually transformed. In that context, cash is used less and electronic payment methods such as ATM cards or e-wallets are strongly developing.
The amount of CASA of the people is also increasing day by day, becoming a new source of capital mobilization besides the traditional deposit methods. Not only banks, but also securities companies, also utilize CASA in customer accounts opened at securities companies for profitable business. The feature of CASA is that it has low mobilization cost and brings high profit margin. Therefore, in recent years, banks have gradually shifted to mobilize from this cheap source of capital.
Having a low cost of capital helps banks reduce lending rates, attract more borrowers, and select potential customers, limiting credit risks. Not only in the banking sector but in all business fields, maintaining the low cost of capital is always the top strength of business. The low cost of fund gives the bank a distinct advantage in the competition with its competitors. Having a high CASA ratio shows that the bank has good payment services and satisfies customers.
It is also obvious that the bank has a good reputation and is preferred by users. In 2020 and 2021, commercial banks had to decrease lending interest rates according to regulations of the Government and the State Bank to support businesses affected by the Covid-19 epidemic. The reduction in interest rates means that profits would be directly reduced. Therefore, in the past two years, the race of mobilizing CASA among banks was extremely fierce in order to reduce capital costs and improve profit margins.
Besides, the Covid-19 pandemic also gradually changed people's direct shopping habits to online shopping, along with online payment services. This created a huge opportunity for banks to attract payment deposits from customers. However, the greater the opportunity, the fiercer the competition will be. The evidence is that many commercial banks recently launched their preferential policies, especially in terms of fees, to attract CASA from customers.
Understanding the importance of CASA, Asia Commercial Joint 1 Stock Bank (ACB) has always innovated and perfected itself, increasing mobilization efficiency over the years. However, in reality, there are still many existing problems and they need to have solutions to overcome. Therefore, the topic “Evaluating the Status of CASA mobilization at Asia Commercial Joint Stock Bank” has been chosen. Background of the study Asia Commercial Joint Stock Bank ACB was established on April 24, 1993, and officially came into operation on June 4, 1993.
ACB is one of the leading commercial banks in Vietnam with reputation, diverse products, and a wide branch network. ACB fully and promptly meets the needs of customers including individuals, small business and enterprises across the country in different business sectors. During nearly 30 years of establishment and development, with the vision of becoming the top retail bank in Vietnam, ACB has affirmed its position in the Vietnamese banking system. ACB is constantly expanding its retail product distribution network in the target market of urban areas in Vietnam.
Efforts have been made to investigate and develop products and services to serve potential new markets in the immediate future. Regarding raising fund activities, ACB has always achieved steady growth over the years thanks to its flexible and practical policies. Besides traditional capital mobilization methods such as savings deposits or the issuance of valuable papers, in recent years, CASA has emerged as a low-cost capital mobilization channel and received great attention from commercial banks. For bankers, in addition to the target of outstanding balance, insurance, debit cards, credit cards, etc., currently, CASA is also a target that bank employees must fulfill.
Therefore, it can be seen that CASA is becoming increasingly critical for commercial banks. With the advantage of low costs, contributing to expanding profit margins, commercial banks are competing fiercely in the race of CASA where ACB is also involved. In the context that digital transformation is taking place strongly in all fields, especially in the economy, CASA is considered to be a greatly potential source of capital for commercial banks. In general, in terms of CASA mobilization, ACB has achieved certain achievements and maintained 2 a position among leading banks.
However, ACB is only in the first years of mobilizing CASA. Attracting CASA is a long way, which requires ACB to propose appropriate solutions to achieve high efficiency and competitive advantage over other banks. Objectives of the study The overall goal of the study is to evaluate the status of CASA mobilization at ACB, and at the same time compare it with other banks. On that foundation, solutions will be offered to overcome the remaining limitations.
Specifically, the study has the following objectives: - Investigating business operations at ACB in the period 2019 – 2021 - Assessing current situation of CASA mobilization at ACB - Comparing CASA to other sources of capital mobilization - Investigating factors affecting CASA mobilization - Proposing solutions to overcome the remaining shortcomings related to CASA 1. Significance of the study The research was conducted to provide solutions to improve the efficiency of CASA mobilization at ACB. Once completed, the study will contribute to helping ACB solve the remaining difficulties related to CASA. Accordingly, the bank's efficiency in mobilizing and using demand deposits has been increasingly improved.
At the same time, there are more and more new customers, which potentially contributes to enhancing the bank's demand deposit.
