Duong Thị Vân Anh— 11190128 — Business English 61C EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In the world of modern technology, there is a rising demand for language translations because language is an efficient channel of communication. The increased transmission of information across various areas utilizing distinct regional languages has increased the demand for translation in recent years. Therefore, Machine Translation (MT) is becoming an indispensable part in the translation process.
This study aims to survey the application of using MT tools for translation process among FFL's students K61 at NEU. Moreover, the translation quality of five selected machine translation systems for English-Vietnamese language is also rated by the students. By employing some techniques of quantitative method, the results show the acquaintance of FFL's students with the variety of MT tools and the average effectiveness of these tools for translating texts. Background In the context of globalization and deeper integration in the world, the role of translation and interpretation skills is increasingly being enhanced. Translation has long been considered a job that requires a lot of time and effort in order to convey accurate and understandable information to the reader. As society develops, the amount of information and documents to be processed is also increasingly diverse. However, translation work has recently become more convenient and easier thanks to the help of technology.
These days, technology has had many breakthroughs and great impacts on different aspects of life and fields of some professions, especially translation. Translation tools are becoming more important thanks to their superior processing ability, which is a part of the translation work. A typical and easily accessible tool is the online translation tool Google Translate, followed by a number of tools such as Microsoft Bing, iTranslate. Rationale As translation is considered a main skill in language learning, students still find it a difficult task to complete; therefore, with the ease of access, students benefit from machine translation tools in their translation assignments despite the number of issues it encounters.
There are many researchers in the world about the perception of students towards the Impact of Google Translate on learning language and education in general such as Cook (2010), Alhaisoni and Alhaysony (2017), but research on the usage of the tools for translating text is still a relatively new issue. For these reasons, it is highly important to address and assess students’ awareness and attitudes towards these tools. The study aims to identify the habit of using machine translation tools of FFL’s students and to what extent it affects the quality of their translations. Research questions The research is carried out with the purpose of answering the following questions: 1. What are the popular machine translation tools among FFL’s students K61? 2. How effective are these tools in supporting FFL’s students K61’s translation? 1. Scope of the study Content scope: The study focuses on the analysis and evaluation of the habit of using translation tools of FFL’s students in translating text and the effectiveness of using these tools.
Subjects: The study targets 72 seniors of the Faculty of Foreign Languages at National Economics University. Geographical scope: The research is based on National Economics University. Time scope: The research was conducted from February 2023 to March 2023. Research methodology Research method The study is conducted based on the quantitative analysis method of the data collected from the survey questionnaire for the above research subjects.
A list of questions will be made to survey the habit of using machine translation tools of FFL’s students, and their assessment of the effectiveness of the tools. Research process The survey will be conducted on 72 seniors of the Business English department at NEU. These students are asked to fill in the survey questionnaire based on their personal experiences of using machine translation tools. Students do not provide personal information in the survey to make the information more objective.
Questions are designed with clear options so that students may quickly and simply select the acceptable answer and their viewpoint. Duong Thị Vân Anh— 11190128 — Business English 61C CHAPTER 2: LITERA TURE REVIEW 2. Definition of Translation Translation has been characterized in a multitude of ways. Mayoral (2001: 45) claims that there are as many definitions as there are authors who have written on the issue.
This variety stems from the fact that translation is a diverse term (Munday, 2001: 4-5). Wiratno (2003) defined translation as a process of transferring a message from Source Language into Target Language. Source Language is an original language that is translated, while Target Language is a final language that is used to express the result of translation. More accurately, Hatim & Munday (2004) acknowledged translation as a process of translating a written text from source language to target language, and the process of converting the information is a difficult task as each language has distinctive grammatical and cultural aspects.
In addition, translation involves the meaning. According to Nida (1969:12), translation comprises recreating the natural equivalent of the source language message in the receptor language, first in terms of meaning and then in terms of style. Newmark offered another perspective on the transferring meaning in a translation. According to Newmark (1988:5), translation is rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the author intended the text.
Moreover, translation also deals with cultural aspects. Kridalaksana, an expert in translation theory, stated in his book (1983:128) that translation is the transmission of messages between cultures and or between languages at the grammatical and lexical level with the aim, effect or intent being preserved as much as possible. Duong Thị Vân Anh— 11190128 — Business English 61C In short, the experts and researchers offered different descriptions of translation. Basically, translation can be considered as the process of specializing from one language to another while ensuring that the content is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
In essence, language is a means of expressing ideas, thoughts, cultural values, knowledge, etc. of a community of people. Therefore, besides linguistic factors, translators need to pay attention to non-linguistic factors such as cultural contexts, so readers can fully understand the translated text. The process of Translation According to Nida and Taber (1969), translation was classified into three phases: Message analysis in the SL, message transmission, and message reconstruction in the TL.
The diagram below illustrates how this technique works. A (Source Language) B (Receptor Language) (Analysis) (Restructuring) xX ([ransfer)————————————-_-__ Y Figure 1: The process of Translation (Source: Nida and Taber (1969)) The chart shows that the source language is assessing the relationship between words and their meanings inside sentences. After that, the meaning is converted from SL to TL. The step of the translation process in which the translator rewrites or rephrases the original material in order to make the final translation outcome understandable and acceptable in terms of TL standards and styles is known as reconstruction.
Duong Thị Vân Anh— 11190128 — Business English 61C Several other experts have offered various points of view on the translation process. Throughout the translation process, which begins with source selection and concludes with reader reactions to the translated text, the information flow is controlled by a network of gatekeepers (Vuorinen: 1995). Each section implies decisions that impact the end outcome of the translation process, namely the target text. Meanwhile, Catford (1965) indicated that the linguistic approach to translation should come first because translation involves language, and the study and description of translation processes must make extensive use of language- description categories.
The linguistic method of translating focuses on meaning and equivalence, in which the same idea is expressed through a different style of language. (2020) also stated that linguistic competency indicates the degree and kind of education. In other words, fluency in both original and target languages is essential for translation. Translators must generate the closest natural equivalent in the target language.
In general, there are three main phases of translating.
