It includes the background of the study to explain why the study was conducted, objectives of the study, the research questions, the significance, the scope and limitations as well as the structure of the study.
Background of the study In the 21st century, the context of globalization in all fields around the world, English plays an important role than ever. This is why in recent years English has become a compulsory subject in most training institutions in Vietnam from primary school, high school to college and university. In Vietnam, there are so many English centers opened to meet the demand of learning English such as: Jaxtina, British Council, Language Link, Langmaster, Alisa,. A lot of parents send their children to the English centers with native-speaking teachers who are believed to support their children a lot.
In learning English, the students are required to understand and use skills effectively such as: listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, before the students achieve all of them, they should know the important thing in learning English is studying vocabulary because “without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed” (Wilkins D. (2015) said that “Vocabulary learning is an important part in foreign language learning as the meanings of new words are very often emphasized, whether in books or in classrooms”. In order to teach and study English vocabulary well, many teaching methods have been researched and applied, in which the method of using games has been widely practiced in the country and around the world as an effective solution used to relieve stress and improve learning motivation for learners.
Currently, the types of games used in teaching English vocabulary are very rich and diverse in terms of forms, rules, purposes,… However, this method does not always bring the desired success. In order to apply games effectively, teachers need to pay attention to many factors such as the time of application, the choice of games, the appropriate 1 Hoang Thi Mai- Faculty of Foreign Languages process,. Besides, many domestic and foreign studies on the use of games in teaching English has been carried out, but most of the studies focus on the application of some individual games to teach a certain language skill (listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary,. It includes using this method to teach Math, History (Victor S.,2017), English Grammar, English Writing (Limantoro et al, 2018),.
Research on vocabulary learning strategies has been conducted by Ms. Thao, class K20 with the scale of participants are English major- students at Banking Academy of Vietnam. After being accepted as an intern at Apollo education and training organization, it is a fact that it is hard for some young students to learn new words although teachers tried to use games to support their studying of new words. Therefore, I want to conduct this study to provide readers with vocabulary teaching strategies.
Instead of giving an overview of the game and its use in teaching English in general, the current study aimed to explore 5 native teachers' perception and practice of using games to teach vocabulary to young English as a foreign language learners at Apollo. Objectives of the study It is undeniable that vocabulary is an important thing in learning and teaching second language. However, not all teachers can explore the suitable methods to teach vocabulary to students because of time limit and lack of equipments. At traditional school, it is hard for teachers to give good vocabulary teaching method for students.
At the English centers, the teacher may have flexible time and a lot of methods to encourage students to learn vocabulary. This study has two main objectives. Firstly, the study focuses on examining the teachers’ perception of using games in teaching vocabulary to their young learners at Apollo English center, Vu Tong Phan branch. Secondly, the study presents their practice on teaching vocabulary through using games.
Then provides the suggestion for English 2 Hoang Thi Mai- Faculty of Foreign Languages teacher as well as English - majored students who want to become a teacher about apllying games in teaching. The research questions The study was conducted to address the following research questions: 1. How do teachers perceive using games to teaching English vocabulary to young learners? 2.
