I. Biện pháp tu từ trong truyện ngắn tiếng Anh đương đại

Nghiên cứu này tập trung vào việc khám phá các biện pháp tu từ trong truyện ngắn tiếng Anh đương đại. Các biện pháp tu từ như ẩn dụ, so sánh, nhân hóa, hoán dụ, và tượng trưng được phân tích để hiểu rõ vai trò của chúng trong việc tạo nên sức hấp dẫn và chiều sâu cho tác phẩm. Nghiên cứu sử dụng phương pháp định lượng và định tính để phân tích 20 truyện ngắn từ năm 2000 đến 2019, nhấn mạnh tầm quan trọng của việc sử dụng nghệ thuật viết để truyền tải thông điệp một cách hiệu quả.

1.1. Phân loại biện pháp tu từ

Dựa trên lý thuyết của Perrine (1987), nghiên cứu phân loại biện pháp tu từ thành 12 loại, bao gồm ẩn dụ, so sánh, nhân hóa, hoán dụ, tượng trưng, nghịch lý, phóng đại, giảm nhẹ, và đảo ngữ. Trong đó, so sánh là biện pháp tu từ được sử dụng phổ biến nhất, trong khi hoán dụ ít xuất hiện hơn. Việc phân loại này giúp hiểu rõ cách các tác giả sử dụng từ vựng tiếng Anh để tạo nên các hiệu ứng nghệ thuật.

1.2. Chức năng của biện pháp tu từ

Các biện pháp tu từ không chỉ làm tăng tính thẩm mỹ mà còn mang lại nhiều chức năng quan trọng. Chúng tạo ra sự hài lòng tưởng tượng, bổ sung hình ảnh, tăng cường cảm xúc, và truyền tải thông điệp một cách ngắn gọn. Ví dụ, ẩn dụ giúp người đọc liên tưởng sâu sắc hơn, trong khi nhân hóa làm cho các đối tượng trở nên sống động. Những chức năng này góp phần làm cho truyện ngắn trở nên hấp dẫn và dễ hiểu hơn.

II. Phân tích ngữ nghĩa và kỹ thuật viết

Nghiên cứu cũng đi sâu vào phân tích ngữ nghĩa và kỹ thuật viết trong truyện ngắn tiếng Anh đương đại. Việc sử dụng từ khóa LSI và từ khóa ngữ nghĩa giúp tối ưu hóa việc phân tích và hiểu rõ cách các tác giả sử dụng ngôn ngữ để tạo nên các hiệu ứng nghệ thuật. 2.1. Tối ưu hóa SEO trong phân tích văn học

Việc sử dụng từ khóa LSI và từ khóa ngữ nghĩa trong phân tích văn học giúp tối ưu hóa quá trình nghiên cứu. Các từ khóa này không chỉ giúp xác định các chủ đề chính mà còn làm rõ mối liên hệ giữa các yếu tố trong tác phẩm. Ví dụ, từ khóa 'ẩn dụ' và 'so sánh' giúp nhận diện các biện pháp tu từ phổ biến, trong khi 'cảm xúc' và 'hình ảnh' làm nổi bật chức năng của chúng.

2.2. Kỹ thuật viết truyện ngắn

Nghiên cứu cũng đề cập đến kỹ thuật viết truyện ngắn, bao gồm cách sử dụng từ vựng tiếng Anh và biện pháp tu từ để tạo nên cấu trúc và nội dung hấp dẫn. Các tác giả thường sử dụng lối viết ngắn gọn nhưng giàu hình ảnh, kết hợp với các biện pháp tu từ để truyền tải thông điệp một cách hiệu quả. Mục tiêu chính của nghiên cứu là xác định các loại biện pháp tu từ phổ biến và chức năng của chúng trong việc làm phong phú thêm nội dung và cảm xúc của truyện ngắn.

Phạm vi nghiên cứu giới hạn trong truyện ngắn đương đại tiếng Anh của hai quốc gia nói tiếng Anh chính thống nhằm đảm bảo tính đại diện và độ tin cậy của dữ liệu. Ý nghĩa của nghiên cứu được thể hiện qua việc cung cấp cái nhìn hệ thống về các biện pháp tu từ, góp phần nâng cao hiệu quả giảng dạy và học tập tiếng Anh, đồng thời khuyến khích người học sử dụng các biện pháp này để làm cho bài viết trở nên sinh động và hấp dẫn hơn. Theo ước tính, simile chiếm tỷ lệ sử dụng cao nhất trong các biện pháp tu từ, trong khi metonymy ít được sử dụng nhất, phản ánh xu hướng sáng tác và phong cách ngôn ngữ của các tác giả đương đại.

Cơ sở lý thuyết và phương pháp nghiên cứu

Khung lý thuyết áp dụng

Nghiên cứu dựa trên lý thuyết về biện pháp tu từ của Perrine (1987) và Leech & Short (2007), trong đó biện pháp tu từ được phân loại thành ba nhóm chính: so sánh (metaphor, simile, personification, apostrophe), liên kết (metonymy, symbol, synecdoche, allegory), và đối lập (paradox, overstatement, understatement, irony). Các khái niệm chính bao gồm:

• Biện pháp tu từ (Figures of Speech): Các kỹ thuật ngôn ngữ nhằm tạo ra ý nghĩa mở rộng và hiệu ứng thẩm mỹ.
• Simile và Metaphor: So sánh trực tiếp và gián tiếp giữa các đối tượng khác nhau để tạo hình ảnh sinh động.
• Personification: Nhân hóa các đối tượng vô tri vô giác để tăng tính biểu cảm.
• Chức năng của biện pháp tu từ: Bao gồm tạo sự tưởng tượng, hình ảnh bổ sung, tăng cường cảm xúc và truyền đạt ý nghĩa ngắn gọn.

Phương pháp nghiên cứu

Nghiên cứu sử dụng kết hợp ba phương pháp: mô tả, định lượng và định tính. Dữ liệu gồm 20 truyện ngắn đương đại tiếng Anh được thu thập từ Internet, với cỡ mẫu khoảng 800-1200 từ/truyện. Phương pháp chọn mẫu là chọn ngẫu nhiên có chủ đích nhằm đảm bảo tính đại diện cho các tác giả và chủ đề đa dạng. Phân tích định lượng được thực hiện bằng cách mã hóa và thống kê tần suất xuất hiện của các biện pháp tu từ qua phần mềm Excel. Phân tích định tính tập trung vào việc giải thích chức năng và hiệu quả của từng biện pháp trong ngữ cảnh truyện. Quá trình nghiên cứu kéo dài trong khoảng thời gian từ 2000 đến 2019, đảm bảo tính cập nhật và phù hợp với xu hướng ngôn ngữ hiện đại.

Kết quả nghiên cứu và thảo luận

Những phát hiện chính

• Phân bố biện pháp tu từ: Trong 12 loại biện pháp tu từ được khảo sát, có 10 loại xuất hiện trong dữ liệu, bao gồm metaphor, simile, personification, metonymy, synecdoche, symbol, paradox, overstatement, understatement và irony. Apostrophe và allegory không được phát hiện trong các truyện ngắn nghiên cứu.
• Tần suất sử dụng: Simile chiếm tỷ lệ cao nhất với 41 trường hợp (khoảng 35.7%), tiếp theo là personification với 15 trường hợp (khoảng 13%), overstatement 10 trường hợp (khoảng 8.7%), và metaphor 10 trường hợp (khoảng 8.7%). Metonymy có tần suất thấp nhất, gần như không xuất hiện.
• Chức năng biện pháp tu từ: Các biện pháp tu từ thực hiện bốn chức năng chính: tạo sự tưởng tượng (affording imaginative pleasure), mang lại hình ảnh bổ sung (bringing additional imagery), tăng cường cảm xúc (adding emotional intensity), và truyền đạt ý nghĩa ngắn gọn (saying much in a brief compass). Simile và understatement đồng thời thực hiện hai chức năng là tăng cường cảm xúc và truyền đạt ý nghĩa ngắn gọn.

Thảo luận kết quả

Việc simile được sử dụng phổ biến nhất phản ánh xu hướng của các tác giả đương đại trong việc tạo hình ảnh trực quan, dễ hiểu và giàu cảm xúc cho người đọc. Personification và metaphor cũng đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc làm phong phú thêm nội dung và tăng cường sự hấp dẫn của truyện. Tần suất thấp của metonymy có thể do tính trừu tượng và khó nhận biết hơn trong ngữ cảnh truyện ngắn. Các chức năng của biện pháp tu từ được minh họa rõ qua các ví dụ điển hình như việc sử dụng “electricity” để biểu thị cảm xúc mãnh liệt hay “killer drones” để tạo hình ảnh ám ảnh trong truyện. Dữ liệu có thể được trình bày qua biểu đồ cột thể hiện tần suất từng loại biện pháp và bảng phân loại chức năng để minh họa sự đa dạng và hiệu quả của biện pháp tu từ trong truyện ngắn.

Đề xuất và khuyến nghị

• Tăng cường giảng dạy biện pháp tu từ: Cần tích hợp sâu hơn các kiến thức về stylistic devices trong chương trình học tiếng Anh, đặc biệt là trong các khóa học về văn học và viết sáng tạo, nhằm nâng cao khả năng nhận biết và sử dụng biện pháp tu từ của học viên.
• Phát triển tài liệu học tập: Soạn thảo các tài liệu hướng dẫn chi tiết, có ví dụ minh họa cụ thể về các biện pháp tu từ trong truyện ngắn đương đại, giúp người học dễ dàng tiếp cận và áp dụng.

A combination of descriptive, quantitative and qualitative methods is employed to use for data analysis. The data of this research is 20 English contemporary short stories of the U.S and England from 2000 to 2019.The study points out that there are ten of twelve types of figures of speech found based on Perrine‟s theory, namely metaphor, simile, personification, metonymy, synecdoche, symbol, paradox, overstatement, understatement, and irony. Simile is the most frequently used, and metonymy ranks at the lowest point in the data of study. As for the effects they create for the stories, there are four functions of these figures of speech found based on Perrine‟s theory: to afford imaginative pleasure, to bring an additional imagery, to add emotional intensity, and to say much in a brief compass.The study hopefully contributes to the procedure of teaching, and learning English in particular and encourages them to use the stylistic device in writing to make their written papers more beautiful and attractive.

Rationale Language may refer either to the specifically human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication, or to a specific instance of such a system of complex communication. The scientific study of language in any of its senses is called linguistics. It has brought to the subject of semantics a certain degree of analysis combined with a view of the study of meaning as an integrated component within the total theory of how language works. When we study about linguistic, we will know about semantics which study the meaning.

In English we know that meaning has important position to study because it will create some effects when someone tries to understand what the speakers or the writers mean. When creating a piece of writing as a literary text, the writer has to use words to express his denotative and connotative meanings. To have good quality of art, a writer not only has to use words effectively, colorfully but also has to use stylistic devices to make his writing more interesting and more persuasive. In literature and writing, using stylistic devices gives an auxiliary meaning, idea, or feeling.

Indeed, the frequent use of stylistic devices is an important element to make the literature more attractive and lively. Particularly, the use of stylistic devices in their written papers has great impact on the readers. Under stylistics, figure of speech is one of language style aspects commonly discussed. Also under stylistics, language style can be seen as figurative language through figures of speech.

Leech & Short (2007) pointed e 2 out that figures of speech are the features which are foregounded by virtue of departing in some way from general norms of communication by means of the language code. Indeed, many researches have been done on figures of speech of literary texts like poems (Perrine, 1987), prose texts (Leech & Short, 2007), and short stories (Abet, 2019). This domain of research is spread to the setting of education for student researchers as well (Simpson, 2004). It can be said that most of the studies made a great effort to understand the famous writer and their typical works like Hemingway‟s novels, O‟Henry‟s short stories, or Emily Dickinson „s poems.

It is clear that short stories not only use denotative meaning to express message from the author but also connotative meaning which is used to express agreement, disagreement, happiness, unhappiness, etc, conveyed to the listeners or readers. Many kinds of figures of speech give us so much information in which they use non literal meaning of words. For example, some sentences in the story use figurative language to make it more beautiful, interesting and imaginative. Figurative language is language using figures of speech (a way of saying one thing and meaning another).

There are many types of figurative language such as: metaphor, simile, symbols, hyperbola, irony, etc. But in general, the figurative language is differentiated into 3 groups in terms of their meanings by comparison, by association and by contrast. These figurative languages are famous in society, and also in the field of education starting from elementary school up to the university level (Simpson, 2004). The proved importance of understanding the stylistic devices or figures of speech in literary texts and the insufficient analysis in contemporary short stories encouraged the author of this thesis to conduct the study on stylistic devices used in English contemporary short stories from 2000 to 2019 to e 3 detect the styles of the modern short story writers.

Aims This study aims to detect the typical figures of speech used in English contemporary short stories to enable enable the learners of English to understand English contemporary short stories thoroughly. Besides, the study also find out the functions of these stylistic devices in these stories in terms of aesthetic view. Objectives In order to achieve these aims, I try to fulfill the following objectives: - To investigate stylistic devices in English contemporary short stories.

- To interpret the functions of these figures of speech in English contemporary short stories. Research questions In order to achieve the above aim and objectives, the research collect and analyze the data in order to answer the following questions: 1. What are common stylistic devices used in English contemporary short stories? 2. What are the functions of these stylistic devices? 1.

Scope of the study There are different types of stories, like novels, short stories, flash fiction, short fiction challenges,. However, I mainly focus on English contemporary short stories for some reasons. Firstly, choosing 20 English contemporary short stories with different authors helps the research be more precise. Each author has a special style.

Secondly, I want to investigate various topics instead of just one topics. Besides, within the framework of this minor thesis, I mainly focus on English contemporary short stories of the U.S e 4 and England from 2000 to 2019. 20 English contemporary short stories are collected mainly from Internet. This study focuses on 12 figures of speeches as stylistic devices in English contemporary short stories categorized by Perrine (1987).

Moreover, all over the world, there are many varieties of English such as British English, Indian English, United States English, etc. However, the thesis only focuses on contemporary short stories of the U.S and England because this is the main source of English and this thesis can figure out the beauty of English linguistics as a native language. Significance of the Study Theoretically, the research will provide a systematic insight into lexical stylistic devices in English contemporary short stories. Practically, the research is expected to be a valuable contribution to the teaching and learning of English stylistics in general and of stylistic devices in English contemporary short stories in particular.

Through the study on the use of stylistic devices in English contemporary short stories, the learners recognize and achieve the beauty of using language in writing stories. Moreover, it will not only help them get better understanding of English contemporary short stories language but also provides them with some necessary techniques in the use of words in writing papers. As a result, their experience will certainly facilitate their English language learning so that they will be able to learn more accurately and effectively. Stylistic devices are used not only in English contemporary short stories but also in everyday life as well.

Understanding stylistic devices in contemporary short stories help both writers write a lot of successful short stories and readers understand the hidden message under the words so that they can read the short stories more quickly and accurately. Design of the study The study is organized into five chapters as follows: Chapter 1 presents the rationale, aims and objectives, research questions, scope of the study, significance of the study, and design of the study. Chapter 2 is a summary of the theory, including not only definitions of stylistic devices, figures of speeches and contemporary short stories but also mainly focusing on the types and the functions of figures of speech. Then, a concise review of the previous studies related to the issues under investigation is also indicated.

Chapter 3 is a description of research method and procedure, data collection, data analysis and reliability ad validity will be fully described. Chapter 4 deals with finding and analyzing the types of figures of speech used in 10 English contemporary short stories. Besides, four functions of figures of speech are clearly discussed. Chapter 5, Conclusion and Implications, provides a brief summary of the research findings, and mentions the limitations of the research.
