The urgency of the topic The stock market is one of the symbols of the economy that affects most industries and is one of the channels to mobilize capital for socio-economic development, industrialization and modernization of the country.
The stock market is one of the symbols of the economy that affects most industries and is one of the channels to mobilize capital for socio-economic development, industrialization and modernization of the country. As the economy grows, the problem of capital becomes more and more urgent, while commercial banking systems cannot meet the demand for capital, requiring early construction of capital markets to attract medium- and long-term, domestic and foreign capital sources for national renovation. Over 21 years of operation, Vietnam's stock market has become an indispensable capital mobilization channel of the Government and businesses and is almost on par with traditional capital mobilization channels. In addition, the stock market also creates an attractive investment channel for the public, especially risk-taking investors.
According to the State Securities Commission, the scale of capital mobilization through the stock market in the period of 2011-2020 reached nearly VND 2.9 million billion, contributing an average of 19.5% of the total investment capital of the whole society. 2021 was also a year of tremendous growth as the number of stock investment accounts increased by a record. According to the Vietnam Securities Depository, in 2020-2022, the size of new account openings has increased tremendously: More than 3.64 million new accounts were opened within the past 3 years while by the end of 2019, the total number of new accounts was 2. In other words, in just the last 3 years of market boom, the number of new accounts entering is greater than the previous 20 years combined.
During the 27 months of market boom (from the beginning of 2020 to the end of March 2022), the average order execution value skyrocketed to 286,229 billion VND/month, which is nearly 4 times higher. According to statistics, the VN-Index has increased by more than 60% from the beginning of 2020 to the middle of 2022. This is a historic record, the wave of new investors entering the market is suddenly high, securities with high liquidity advantages quickly attract cash flow and become the most effective investment channel for idle cash flow. However, in addition to the impressive achievements, Vietnam's stock market is still young compared to developed stock markets in the world and there are limitations such as uncertain market structure, low investor level, regulations on market transparency are being perfected but there are still many shortcomings.
In particular, Vietnam's stock market is also one of the most volatile markets in the world. In the period of 2020-2022, Vietnam's stock 1 market witnessed a cycle of harsh fluctuations. The representative index of Vietnam's stock market, VN-Index, has been among the top gainers and biggest decliners in the world. VN- Index closed at a historical high of 1,528.57 points on January 6, 2022.
