The urgency of the topic With the relentless development of the Internet and technology in the current era, they have become an inseparable part of our modern society.
The number of people benefiting from e-commerce is also significantly increasing. According to data from Statista, in 2018, the share of E-commerce (EC) accounted for 10.2% of total global retail sales; experts forecast that this ratio will continue to rise to 17. This demonstrates the positive impact of applying technology to online transactions and how consumer behavior has changed under the influence of modern technology. Modern technology provides the foundation for researchers to foresee a positive future for E-commerce in the upcoming years.
Since joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), foreign investors have made significant investments in various sectors in Vietnam, including E-commerce (EC) and the Internet. In the future, this truly creates a strong infrastructure to drive the development of the EC industry in Vietnam. Technology plays an indispensable role in promoting the growth of EC. Data from the Ministry of Information and Communications shows that in Vietnam, the Internet usage rate has reached 55%, higher than the global average of 46%.
The electronic commerce (E-Commerce) industry has developed and become an increasingly popular shopping service sector in recent times. According to the "Digital 2022 Global Overview Report" by We are social and Hootsuite, Vietnam ranks 11th among countries in terms of the proportion of people using the Internet for weekly shopping, with a rate of 58%, on par with the global average and surpassing many countries such as Germany, France, Australia, the United States, and Japan. However, it is still lower compared to countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, India, China, South Korea, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom. The scale of the E-Commerce market in Vietnam has undergone 12 significant changes.
In 2015, this market was only about 4 billion USD, but it is expected to increase to 49 billion USD by 2025. Furthermore, according to Google's forecast, the EC market size in Vietnam could reach 57 billion USD by 2025. Based on the "Vietnam E-commerce Index 2023" report, the average score of the E-commerce (EC) index for this year is 25. Efforts to build EC websites for agricultural products, utilize technology to support businesses, and promote cashless payments in various sectors have contributed to this result.
Notably, in the complex context of the recent Covid-19 pandemic, the EC industry in Vietnam has experienced even stronger growth. To maintain competitiveness, continuous updating of strategies and enhancing market share, as well as reinforcing brand reputation, are necessary. Despite its widespread adoption, limitations still exist regarding consumer preference and trust in this shopping method in Vietnam. Because of these challenges, the objective of this research is to identify the factors influencing the sustainable development of E-commerce platforms in Vietnam, while seeking and proposing solutions for the sustainable development of the E-commerce industry in Vietnam.
