Moreover, it can be applied in a wide variety of situations to business managers make crucial decision. The bankruptcy prediction models have been developed based on old original modes ofAltman(1968), Ohlson(1980) and Zmijewski(1984)usingmultivariate discriminate, logit and probit analysis respectively. This thesisconducted the comparison of predictive power among these modelsusingVietnameselisted firms during the period from 2008 to 2014.

The data is taken from listed companies in HOSE and HNX stock market and characterized the determinants of financial distress in terms of firm accounting andfinancial ratios. To compare the predictive power of these models one year, two years and three year beforehand bankruptcy, the analysis of differences of accuracy rates and Receiver Operating Curves is applied. Overall, Ohlson’sprobit model (1980) performed most accurate on the Vietnam listed companies within investigation periods. This implies that Ohlson’smodel is the best predictor for bankruptcy likelihood for the listed companied in Vietnam.

However, since the unstable accuracy rates and the highest frequency of Type I and Type II errors, such resultshould be set into perspective and studied cautiously. During 2011-2014 period, under the impact of the world economic crisis and the internal issues, Vietnam economy faced a series of challenges such slower growth rate fluctuating around 5-7 % per year, reduction of purchasing power and bankruptcy phenomenon.

According to data of Department of Statistic in 2014, amount of bankrupt companies significantly increases annual. Figure 1: Trend in amount of bankrupt companies from 2011 to 2014 Bankruptcy 67823 60767 52739 54261 2011 2012 2013 2014 Source: Author’s summary from The General Statistics Office of Vietnam It is alarmed that there are more than fifty-thousand declaring bankruptcy since 2011. Once issue of bankruptcy surges suddenly, it is not only an economic phenomenon , but also a social concern because of its consequence as rising unemployment , spreading impact and losing faith onstable economy. Moreover, the failure of acompany causes spread of crisis to other parts of the financial system and crisis 9 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com (TonatiuhPena etal.2009), leading business bankruptcy phenomenon has received interest from governance managers and parties involved.2 Problem Statement Bhagarva et al., 1998 said “Bankruptcies are devastating”, especiallybusiness failure creates significant high cost and heavy losses.

In fact, predicting likelihood of business bankruptcy is the main concern because it might reduce future costs as well as minimize risk and loss of business and perhaps even prevent the bankruptcy itself. Also, prediction about bankruptcy likeihood will help investors, banks or credit institution to choose the good enterprise performance to cooperate, finance and invest capital.Naturally, a reliable method to predict a possible bankruptcy is interested by not only academic but also private agents and government. In order to control and measure the financial distress issues as well, business managers need tools for financial analysis and the prediction of bankruptcy model. Prediction of bankruptcy is of increasing importance to corporate governance.

Moreover, the prediction of corporate bankruptcy has been demonstrated in many empirical studies, such so-called Z-Score model (Altman 1968), O-score model (Ohlson 1980) and Zmijewski's model (Zmijewski 1984). These models are used to predict the profitability that a firm will go into bankruptcy within two years and forecast corporate defaults. Z-score model being a well-known study of Edward Altman was developed in 1968. The multivariate discriminate analysis (MDA) with more financial ratios was constructed discriminant function inZ-score model.

Another model to predict company failure is the logit approached by Ohlson (1980). He used the logit model and US firms to develop an estimate of the probability of failure for each firm. Ohlson´s work (1980) was then followed by study of Zmijewski (1984) that created another bankruptcy prediction model, the probit model. 10 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com A variety of models have been developed in the academic studies, however the selection of the technical to be used is a challenge and what academic model that is best suitable one in Vietnam is still a difficult exercise.

According to KhaliliAraghi, Maryam (2013), the overall accuracy and predictive power of logistic regression are higher than those of MDA and probit model. As Kim et al. (2002) and Cho et al. (1995) also found that a combination of multiple bankruptcy models reduce the variance of estimated error and also improves the whole recognition performance.

Therefore, the goal of this research is to examine the accuracy rate of the original Altman (1968) and Ohlson (1980) and Zmijewski (1984) models on Vietnamese listed companies during 2008 -2014 period.3 Research objective and methodology As stated above, bankruptcy not only causes costs affecting to business’s operation itself, but creates burden for society as well. Therefore, numerous bankrupt predicted models have been studied and developed as the purpose forecasting financial risk and then having decision promptly. The aim of this study is to assess the three most common accounting–based bankruptcy prediction models. To achieve this purpose, the underlying problem leads to the following research question: What is the predictive power difference between the bankruptcy prediction models of Altman (1968), Ohlson (1980) and Zmijewski (1984) to Vietnamese listed firms in period from 2008-2014? This study is to compare the accuracy power of bankruptcy models, such Z-score, O- score and Zm-scoreinvestigated in one year, two year and three years before bankruptcy.

The source of data is taken from listed companies in context of Vietnamfor the period from 2008 to 2014. In more depth, the aim is to choose a most efficient model by assessing the accuracy rate of the three accounting-based bankruptcy prediction models. The function 11 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com relationship between independent variable and the probability of bankruptcy is examined to enhance bankruptcy prediction accuracy. Furthermore,in order to assess the accuracy of models, it is necessary to analyze ROC curve. This study is conducted with hope that its finding will be useful for subjects such manager, lender, investor and etc.

have crucialdecision to reduce and predict financial risks.4 Contribution This research contributes to the bankruptcy, including academic and practice. Till to now, there are many well-known researches with respect to prediction for corporate bankruptcy. It is not denied that these methods have both strengths and weaknesses, and choosing the suitable model for empirical application should be interested. Studies conducting about bankruptcy prediction models in the context of Vietnam often apply one of famous model such Z-score of Altman (1968), Mertron model of MKV-Merton (1974) or O-score model- Ohlson (1980) without assessing the efficient of each model.

In this research, three models including Altman (1968) and Ohlson (1980) and Zmijewski (1984) are used with the main purpose of evaluating the accuracy rate of the three accounting-based bankruptcy prediction models in order to find out the most efficient accounting-based bankruptcy prediction model. Moreover, the suitable predict model will bring benefits to users. Investors can assess the likelihood of bankruptcy so that this risk can be compensated in the expected return, then having right investment decision. Using the models, commercial bank detects the credit risk of a firm.

Besides, the stakeholders will also benefit from this due to having a better insight how bankruptcy can be predicted. 12 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.5 Outline The rest of the paper is organized as follows:  Chapter 2 introduces literature review about core concepts related to the research problem.  Chapter 3 is devoted to the description data and well-known statistical techniques used for bankruptcy prediction, namely discriminant analysis, logistic and probitregression. Further, it describes method research.

 Section 4 reports results and discussion of results.  Finally, Section 5 draws someconclusions about the proposed methods and outlines future work. 13 TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW This sectionstarts to review important concepts describing business failure that used to employ in many studies. Moreover, bankrupt prediction model is introduced.

Finally, it is necessary to present empirical studies of comparing method of bankruptcy prediction models.1 Concepts “While there is abundant literature describing prediction models of corporate bankruptcy, few research efforts have sought to predict corporate financial distress”, the statement was recognize by Platt and Platt (2002, p.
