Hanoi, December 2018 Le Thi Huong ii ABSTRACT The objective of this research is to know the kinds of cohesive devices which applied in the novel “ Vanity Fair” and their Vietnamese translation version and made the contrastive analysis on cohesive devices in the novel “ Vanity Fair” and their Vietnamese translation version.
This research uses the linguistics approach to the analysis of discourse. Firstly, it is descriptive, qualitative and comparative research which focus on the cohesive devices and take total sampling technique to understand the cohesive devices in two selected chapters in the Vanity Fair novel, contrastive method is used to analyze and contrast grammatical and lexical features of cohesive devices and the solutions adopted in the Vietnamese translation. Secondly, the author used Halliday and Hasan’s classification on devices cohesive to conduct the analysis the data. Finally, the author classified the data each category where they belong to and gave a little comment and compare them with the equivalents of Vietnamese.
As a result, the author found how cohesive devices were used and then drew the inferences dealing with the case. From the result, it was known that cohesive devices occur in all kinds of Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion devices with no exception, and it is done in various ways. The result of this research is that the highest percentage of lexical cohesive devices is reiteration. In contrast, the highest occurrences of grammatical cohesive devices are reference and conjunction.
Although, some types of them were used less, they did not affect the cohesiveness of the texts and the meaning of the texts which is delivered well to the readers. Also, the finding of this study prove some implications of cohesive devices to English teacher and learners of English. iii LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS E. g example L2 learners NSs native speakers NNSs non-native speakers of English.

The situation is often a combination of sentences is used to get our message across. According to Nguyen Hoa ( 2004) states that we do not communicate using just a single utterance. Communication can be in the form of written as well as spoken discourse (stretch of lang).
Human language is a system of communication devalues the importance of other types of communication: “Either we must deprive the notion “ communication” of all significance or else we must reject the view that the purpose of language is communication” (Chomsky, 1980a:230). This is called discourse, which has a meaning of its own, can occur as a poem, a lecture, a short story, a business letter, a letter of complaint, or a play or novel, etc. Novel is a kind of literary work contains of compact sentences. Every sentence contains of related words.
Every author has different way to create novel by use their own words. Novel is a long story relates one part to other part. A word relates with other words and they became sentences by using cohesive devices. Every writer has the different ways in conduct cohesive devices in text.
It’s depend on author’s knowledge and experience. The ability to conducting cohesive devices in sentence is the important element to create a novel. There is no grammatical and lexical cohesion without cohesive devices. Cohesion occurs where the interpretation of some element in discourse depends on another.
Cohesion is the network of lexical, grammatical, and other relations which link various parts of a text. Halliday and Hasan(1976:4) define that cohesion is as relations of meaningthat exist within the text and that defines it as a text. It means that without cohesive devices, a discourse can be never meaningful. Without them the semantic system cannot be effectively activated at all because of the lack of their logical relationship between sentences and paragraphs.
In this study, writer analyzed a novel from William Makepeace Thackeray, that has been translated to English language, with title is “Vanity 1 Fair” (1847 -1848)”. The use of cohesive devices in English and Vietnamese version is different. Vietnamese version contains a few of cohesive devices rather than English version. There is so many cohesive devices found in English. This fact can be seen through the preliminary study has been done by writer.
Cohesive devices not only found in nominal group of word and also found in verbal, clausal and other group of words. The sentences in novel contain of grammatical and lexical devices. This novel is a controversial novel from William Makepeace Thackeray, because of topic that instead in novel described of the Napoleonic period in England, reflecting its satirisation of early 19th-century British society and it has been the UK's best-loved books. The topic of cohesion has always appeared to be the most useful constituent of discourse analysis or text linguistics applicable to translation (Newmark, 1987) and cohesion is an important factor of discourse which has attracted a lot of attention from linguists. Cohesion is considered one of the most challenging aspects of translation, as any language has its own unique manners in which it employs cohesive devices in the creation of a cohesive text.
Each language has its own patterns to convey the interrelationships of persons and events; there is not any language that these patterns may be ignored, if the translation is to be understood by its readers (Callow, 1974). The topic of cohesion has always appeared as the most useful constituent of discourse analysis that is applied to translation. English and Vietnamese have different grammatical and lexical structures, and it is only natural that they pose great difficulties and challenges for a translator to deal with, especially in the field of literature. Furthermore, the knowledge of cohesion and coherence are actually regarded as the crucial aspects of the language usage.
There have been so far studies on cohesive devices in English written discourse with reference to Vietnammes. But, from the previous study analyzed all types of cohesive devices in novel is less.So many writers studied about novel with analyze outside element of this novel. From all of previous study above analyze the topic that outside of cohesive devices, maybe several study about cohesive devices from several types. Those reasons mentioned above are the most important ones that have encouraged the author to conduct: “ A contrastive 2 analysis on cohesive devices in the novel “Vanity Fair” and their Vietnamese translation version” as the topic this study.
Based on the detailed classification of cohesive devices in English by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and underpinned by Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004) Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). In this study, writer provides a close contrastive analysis of all types of cohesive devices in two chapters of the novel “Vanity Fair” and their equivalents in the Vietnamese translation. The study is also expected to be a good reference for those who love “Vanity Fair” by William Makepeace Thackeray in particular and literary works’s good translation in English in general.2 Aims and objectives of the study 1.
