Background Retail banking services play an important role in banking activities. These services not only help banks earn a stable amount of profit, but they also contribute to market expansion, competitiveness improvement and stability in banking activities.
Especially in the context of economic crisis, the importance of retail banking services are emphasized and most domestic banks and foreign banks have focused on developing retail banking services. Vietnamese market is evaluated as a potential retail banking market. Vietnamese population reached 90 million people in November, 2013, but only 20% of them have bank accounts and one-thirds of population are accessing banking services. Besides, awareness of people about hi-tech services and banking services and the living standard are gradually improving.
That’s why banks in Vietnam are attracted by the retail sector, which results in fierce competition among banks. Therefore, the banks have planned and invested to develop retail banking services by expanding business network, renovating technologies, improving service quality, diversifying retail banking products. Techcombank is not excluded from the common trend. Techcombank is known as one of pioneers in developing retail banking services in Vietnam.
In recent years, retail banking services are highly appreciated in banking activities of Techcombank. Achievements that Techcombank gained cannot deny. However, Techcombank needs to deal with some issues to raise the competitive ability and fulfill the goal to become the best retail bank in Vietnam in coming years. For the above reality, the quality of Techcombanks’ retail banking services needs to be recognized and evaluated.
Then proposals to improve these services should be given to help Techcombank as well as other banks exploit and optimize the 1 Graduation Thesis Banking Academy potentiality of retail banking services. Thus, I decided to do research entitled “Developing retail banking services in Techcombank”. Research objectives The thesis aims at clarifying the following objectives: Giving brief information about retail banking services and their benefits Analyzing necessity of developing retail banking services in Techcombank Evaluating achievements that Techcombank gained in the period Proposing some solutions and recommendations to improve Techcombanks’ retail banking services. Scope of the study The paper focuses on analyzing the real situation of Techcombanks’ retail banking services in the period from 2010 to 2013 and suggesting proposals for Techcombank and SBV to intensify retail banking services.
Research methodology To carry out the study, the author of this thesis has chosen several methods to name but some compare and contrast, statistics, collective and logical methods to analyze information and secondary data related to retail banking services from books, articles, annual reports and Internet. The high quality of services: Retail banking business depends on the trade mark and the quality of services which are the keys to develop the retail banking services and attract clients. High average operating expense: Customers not only spread out in the country but they also meet difficulties in carrying out transactions, which requires the expansion of banking network and the costly online transaction investment. Capital mobilization Capital mobilization is one of the most important banks’ functions to make funds available for lending and investment. Commercial banks raise funds from individuals, small and medium enterprises by financial tools namely demand deposit, saving account, valuable paper issuance. Although the amount of idle money which comes from individuals, small and medium enterprises is not huge, a large number of customers make capital mobilization sources potential and available. Besides traditional banking products, commercial banks have diversified savings products with the flexible payment term and competitive interest rate in recent time to meet the customers’ needs.
Retail credit Retail credit provides customers with short - term, medium – term, long – term loans, including: mortgages, auto loans, personal installment loans, household business loans, online loans against saving accounts. The number of retail customers has gone up continuously recently and accounted significantly in total banks’ customers, which contributed to the increase in banks’ revenue. It is believed that retail credit will become a potential banking activity. Nevertheless, customers are sensible to interest rate, term and procedure, so commercial banks have to face the competition with one another.
Card services Bank cards, multifunctional products, are issued by banks and provide a lot of useful services to customers namely money withdrawals, deposits, overdraft facilities, 5 Graduation Thesis Banking Academy money transfers, so on. Payment cards are very various, but credit cards and debit cards (domestic and international debit card) are main types of payment cards. Card services help banks raise their funds, collect fees and improve their image in the market. Payment services The main payment instruments include cheques, standing orders, trade bills… On behalf of customers, banks pay for goods and services through clearing system or money transfer.
Besides that, paying salary through bank accounts, paying electricity or water bills become more and more popular as well.
