The importance of study Acting as a payment intermediary as well as a credit intermediary, together with money creation, banking system provides a link between borrowers and savers in the economy in order to transfer capital and help money flow to be easily circulated. Thus, banking system plays an indispensable part in promoting the market economy. Vietnam is a country with banking-based financial system, so any fluctuations in the banking system can affect the economic development of the country.
In the context of growing international economic integration in recent years, many opportunities have been created for Vietnam, but this means that Vietnam will have to face some potential risks from complicated fluctuations in the world as well as the level of cutthroat competition between banks increasing when more foreign partners invest in Vietnam’s market. In addition, a three-year between 2020 and 2022 was a period when the world economy was subject to many fluctuations of the Covid-19 pandemic, which took a toll of businesses operations, many firms even went bankrupt, and Vietnam was no exception. In order to recover the economy quickly from the damage caused by Covid 19, the Vietnamese government always tried to find solutions to directly support businesses as well as workers, and banks has become an effective assistant of the Government in allocating capital sources as well as mobilizing savings and unused capital for business activities. This has asserted that the banking sector truly plays a vital role in the economic growth of a country Facing these difficulties requires commercial banks to have strategies improving their bank performance as well as the management ability of BOD.
It can be seen that this is the reason for making analysis and evaluation of bank performance more necessary than ever. Through the assessment process, it is possible to identify potential risks in the banking system in general and each commercial bank in particular. This also help build a solid foundation for the BOD in the process of setting reasonable business goals as well as making policies to minimize risks and improve financial capacity, ensure competitiveness and position of the bank. Thereby, banking sector is one of the areas with the most potential risks because banking activities involve many different subjects and industries.
This means that 1 when the bank is at risk, it will greatly affect the development of economy. For this reason, nowadays in the world, many types of models have been applied to evaluate the bank performance, but “one of the most popular methods for the analysis of the financial soundness of banks, namely the CAMELS framework” (Roman & Sargu, 2013). Based on the combination of financial indicators from many aspects in CAMELS model including capital, asset, management, earnings and sensitivity to market risk will show the strengths together with limitations of the bank activities. During 30 years of operation, ACB has constantly improved bank performance, especially, when SBV officially allowed ACB to apply Circular 41/2016/NHNN regulating CAR according to Basel II standards in 2019.
However, with the aim of adapting the current Vietnamese economic context fluctuation, ACB always needs to supervise carefully bank’s activities as well as anticipate potential risks. Realizing the importance and necessity of bank’s performance analysis and the high practical application of the CAMELS model in evaluating efficiency in bank activities, I would like to choose the topic "Applying CAMELS model in analysis of bank performance in ACB joint stock commercial bank” to study the thesis, therefore pointing out some solutions to improve business efficiency for ACB. Literature review Analyzing bank performance plays an extremely important role in the process of evaluating the bank's management ability. Therefore, not only in Vietnam but also other countries have always paid attention to this issue, in which a number of typical studies apply the CAMELS model to evaluate the performance of commercial banks: 2.
Foreign research: Ongore and Kusa (2013) conducted a study on “Determinants of Financial Performance of Commercial Banks in Kenya” using CAMEL model to measure the performance of commercial banks in Kenya. With data collected from 37 commercial banks in Kenyan and using regression model, author shown the relationship between performance of banks and influencing factors, in which “capital adequacy , asset quality and management efficiency significantly affect the performance of commercial banks in Kenya, however the effect of liquidity on the performance of commercial banks is not strong”. Along with that “the relationship between bank 2 performance and capital adequacy and management efficiency was found to be positive and for asset quality the relationship was negative”. The result of K.
The study collected data from 10 developed countries with a total of 21 banks from 2013-2017 and used quantitative analysis together with panel data to show the relationship between ROA and indicators in CAMEL model. After analysis and evaluation, authors drew the conclusion that capital adequacy and earning had positive impact on bank performance. However, asset quality, management efficiency, and liquidity had negative effect on bank performance. Research by Srinivas and Saroja (2013) on “Comparative Financial Performance of HDFC BANK and ICICI BANK” using CAMELS model shown that there was no significant difference in the financial performance of two banks including HDFC bank and ICICI Bank.
