Hence efficiency in banking are also highly important: high quality at low cost boosts welfare. Adequate performance of a bank is of crucial importance to their customers. Prices and quality of its products are determined by bank lending efficiency. Since efficiency in lending activities cannot be observed directly, various indirect measures in the form of simple indicators or models have been devised and used both in theory and in practice.
In her research published on “Vietnamese Economic Magazine” no 256 (02/20102), Vo T. Thuy Anh has measured bank lendings efficiency has developed a model of measuring the quality of consumer credit services of commercial banks with 6 components, 34 elements and concluded that the main indicators of bank lendings efficiency included service capacity, empathy, consumption, followed by perceived price, reliability of promises to customers, convenience and tangible facilities, ability to respond after disbursement and ultimately reliability of service delivery process. According to Bikker, J. Background In Vietnam, unlike commercial banks with profits as a most important goal in operation, or policy banks with its community mission as the priority in operation, the co-operative bank has relatively different goals.
The appearance of the co-operative bank is for not only earning profits but also for supporting its members and regulating the entire people's credit fund system. Not small as compared in network size to other commercial banks, the co- operative bank has a dense network of people's credit funds widespread throughout the country, which means a very potential lending market. Traditionally, bank lending provides a great amount of revenues while posing the largest and most obvious source of credit risk to banks. Over the last 3 years, the Vietnamese economy have witnessed a fast growth in the banking sector, but in the high competitiveness of many private banks, the co-operative bank has always maintained its place in the banking field with a very stable market for years.
The topic of evaluation on credit performance has been carried out on many studies. However, these works almost focus on the situation of commercial banks only. Meanwhile, there is very little writing about the co-operative bank. Therefore, I chose the topic “Measuring the efficiency of bank lendings in the co-operative bank, Hai Duong branch over the period 2017-2019” for my bachelor thesis.
Objectives - General objective: To evaluate the bank lendings performance through analyzing basic criteria, thereby suggesting some recommendations to improve credit efficiency at the branch. - Specific objectives: • To evaluate the actual situation of lending activities at the branch for two parts: members credit and corporate & individual credit • To analyze the importance and the efficiency of members' credit activities. Subjects and scope 8 Subject: The thesis writes about the situation and the efficiency of bank lending at the co-operative bank - Hai Duong branch. After that, some recommendations to improve bank lending activities at the branch will be suggested.
Scope: The thesis assesses the situation and the efficiency of bank lending at the co-operative bank - Hai Duong branch in the period of 2017-2019. Method In this thesis, a combination of methods will be used such as statistical methods, analysis, synthesis and comparison. In addition, the thesis also uses tables and diagrams for demonstration. Contributions The bank analyzed in the thesis is from Vietnam, a developing country with regionally emerging market in recent years.
Written in English, the thesis will provide information on the co-operative bank in Vietnam for the people who care about the banking industry, especially the co-operative banking model. For the co-operative bank, the thesis gives some recommendations in improving its lending activities through the theory, analysis and evaluation. As this thesis writer, regarding my studying major in banking field, I expect to gain an in-sight of how the co-operative bank works. Beside knowledge, some other benefits I expect to gain in the process of writing my graduate thesis are my improvement in various skills such as researching, data analysing, English writing and problem-solving, which will help me a lot for my future career.
Thesis structure In addition to the foreword and the conclusion, the content of the thesis is divided into 3 chapters: • Chapter 1: Introduction to the efficiency of bank lendings in the co-operative bank • Chapter 2: Measuring the efficiency of bank lendings in the co-operative bank- branch of Hai Duong • Chapter 3: Recommendations for the co-operative bank- branch of Hai Duong. 9 CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO THE EFFICIENCY OF BANK LENDINGS IN CO-OPERATIVE BANK 1.1 Introductory to depository institutions 1. Definitions A depository institution is a financial institution (such as a savings bank, commercial bank, savings and loan associations, or credit unions) that is legally allowed to receive monetary deposits from consumers. A depository institution accepts depositors’ money and typically pay interest over time, and sometimes it will provide other services to attract depositors beside interest payments.
While holding depositors’ money, a depository institution lends it out to other people or organizations in the form of mortgages or other loans and generate more interest than the amount they pay for depositors. The three main types of depository institutions are commercial banks, savings institutions and credit unions. Functions of depository institutions Depository institutions play a very significant role in the monetary and financial service sector of every economy. Generally, the main active roles of these institutions include: - Pooling the money of many savers and lend it out to people and businesses who are in need.
- Providing safekeeping services and enhance liquidity of cash flow in the economy. In particular, depository institutions function to offer deposit accounts that can accommodate the amount that the capital-surplus entities in the economy actually need. Without these depository institutions, each capital-surplus entity would have the challenge of identifying a capital deficit entity that is in need of borrowing the exact amount of money available in a particular period. This implies that such capital-surplus entities would have to perform credit evaluation and be ready to incur the risk of default.
10 The depository institutions therefore bridge this gap by acting as a link of transactions between the capital-surplus and the capital-deficit entities. On the other hand, in their business, the depository institutions have to make determinations of credit worthiness of the capital- deficit entities as a financial strategic initiative that requires high level of expertise. As a result, the depository institutions function to enhance effective and undisrupted flow of funds, facilitating the lending and borrowing activities in the financial services industry of any economy. Introductory to bank lendings 1.
Definition of bank lendings Bank lendings refer to the activity whereby a bank lends money to customers and earn profit on the interest of the loans. Bank lendings can also be called as bank credit, in which “credit” is defined as a loan, a temporary transferred ownership, or a relationship between lender and borrower. Stemming from the characteristic of banking activities: the monetary field, the assets traded in bank lendings are mainly currency. Bank lendings can be defined as the asset transaction between the bank and the borrowers (economic organizations and individuals in the economy), in which the bank transfers assets to the borrower who uses the loan for a specified period of time as agreed upon, and the borrower is responsible for unconditionally repaying both the principal and interest to the bank upon maturity.
