FOREIGN MACHINE INTERFACE INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 30 FOREIGN MACHINE INTERFACE INTRODUCTION The Foreign Machine Interface (FMI) is an electrical means of communication between the DEK machine and an adjacent machine/conveyor, using electrical signals. The signals are transferred using opto-couplers and/or solid state relays which keep the machines electrically isolated. The DEK machine can interface with many different types of adjacent machine. The machines utilize a set of timing and control signals (protocols) for commu- nication with adjacent machines.
There are two different types of interface available for the DEK machine: • An FMI Pod for SMEMA, Fuji or Panasonic protocols • A Multi-Interface Unit (MIU) for all other protocols The FMI Pod and the MIU are supplied with the following cables: • An FMI loom which connects the FMI port on the machine controller, to the MIU or FMI Pod • Two interface cables, one cable for each adjacent machine The adjacent machine/conveyor can be in the following configurations: Upline Downline Adjacent Adjacent Machine/ Machine/ Conveyor DEK Conveyor Machine Left to Right Board Transfers Downline Upline Adjacent Adjacent Machine/ Machine/ Conveyor DEK Conveyor Machine Right to Left Board Transfers Upline Upline Adjacent Adjacent Machine/ Machine/ Conveyor Conveyor Downline Downline DEK DEK Adjacent Machine Machine Adjacent Machine/ Machine/ Conveyor Conveyor Left to Left Board Transfers Right to Right Board Transfers Figure 30-1 Machine Arrangements for Board Transfers Chapter Issue 3 Jan 08 Technical Reference Manual 30.1 FOREIGN MACHINE INTERFACE FMI POD FMI POD The FMI Pod is only used where both the upline and downline are using SMEMA, Fuji or Panasonic interfaces. For all other interfaces refer to the MIU interface later in this chapter. The DEK FMI Pod is a communications interface that allows DEK Printing Machines to communicate with upline and downline board handlers. The Board Available signal and Machine Ready signal can occur at anytime, but board transfer does not occur until both signals are present. The Board Available signal is present until the board has left the machine. If the Board Request signal is not present, a board is not transferred. The Board Request signal is output continuously to the previous stage until the board arrives. No Board Request signal from the next stage indicates that the board has arrived at the next stage.
