As noted by Harold Bierman anh Hausman (1970), credit granting is a critical operation for banks, driving their business development and growth. Credit service at commercial banks Several studies have been conducted on the factors affecting credit services at commercial banks (Agarwal et al., 2010; Tripathy and Goyal, 2017; Vu, 2018; Ashraf and Riaz, 2019; Ogunleye et al. For insance, Vu (2018) find that the availability of credit information and the creditworthiness of borrowers were important factors affecting credit services at commercial banks.
Accordingly, the study suggest that the availability of credit information could improve the efficiency of credit services, and that the creditworthiness of borrowers could help reduce the risk of loan defaults. Similarly, Tripathy and Goyal (2017) conclude that the availability of credit information could improve the efficiency of credit services. The study state that the use of credit bureaus and credit scoring models could help banks make better lending decisions, reduce the risk of loan defaults, and improve the overall credit service quality. Prior studies have also highlighted another factor that affects credit services which is the creditworthiness of borrowers.
For instance, Gupta and Malhotra (2016) state that a borrower's creditworthiness significantly affects the availability and terms of credit services offered by banks. The study suggested that banks could improve their credit services by using reliable credit scoring models and other methods to assess borrower creditworthiness. Furthermore, Ramezani and Allahyari (2018) find that apart from the availability of credit information, the quality of bank management, including the use of advanced technology, could influence the efficiency and effectiveness of credit services. The study suggeste that banks could improve their credit services by investing in advanced technology, improving the quality of management, and streamlining lending processes.
In addition, investigating credit services at commercial banks in Vietnam, Tran (2020) identify several factors affecting credit services, including the credit appraisal process, the quality of collateral, and the relationship between the bank and its customers. The study imply that commercial banks could improve their credit services by implementing a more rigorous credit appraisal process, improving the quality of collateral, and strengthening their relationships with customers. Previous literatrue also highlight the relationship between credit appraisal process the quality of collateral and credit service. For instane, Magesa et al.
(2019) found that the credit appraisal process significantly affects credit services, with banks that use rigorous credit appraisal processes having better credit service quality. Similarly, the quality of collateral also affects credit service quality, with banks that require high-quality collateral having better credit service quality. Extant literature conclude the impact of the macroeconomic environment on credit services. For instance, Ashraf and Riaz (2019) state that macroeconomic factors such as inflation, interest rates, and economic growth significantly affect credit services offered by commercial banks.
The study refers that commercial banks could reduce the risk of loan defaults and improve their credit services by monitoring the macroeconomic environment and adjusting lending policies accordingly. In conclusion, this literature review has highlighted several factors affecting credit services, including the availability of credit information, the creditworthiness of borrowers, the macroeconomic environment, the quality of bank management, the credit appraisal process, and the quality of collateral. By addressing these factors, commercial banks can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their credit services, leading to better outcomes for both banks and borrowers. Reseach Gap The banking industry plays a crucial role in economic development by providing financial services to individuals and businesses.
One of the key services offered by commercial banks is credit services, which allow customers to borrow funds for various purposes. However, despite the importance of credit services, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the factors that affect their delivery in commercial banks, especially in developing countries like Vietnam. Understanding these factors and their impact on credit services is essential for banks to provide high-quality lending services that meet the needs of their customers. In the process of reading documents on the factors affecting the lending activities of banks, I found that the articles have many unclear points and have not been completely resolved as follows: Inadequate credit appraisal process: If the credit appraisal process of a bank is not prohibit enough, it can lead to higher levels of non-performing loans (NPLs) and credit losses.
Poor quality of collateral: If the quality of collateral is not properly assessed or monitored, it can result in inadequate security for the loan and a higher risk of default. Lack of access to credit information: If banks do not have access to accurate and up-to-date credit information, it can result in poor lending decisions and a higher risk of default. Realizing the importance of credit work, this research focuses on analyzing "Factors affecting credit services at Sai Gon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank’.
